Dr Rainer Gruessner has been in surgical leadership positions for sixteen years, in either Chair or Vice-Chair positions. Gruessner was appointed Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine in 2007. He is also a Professor of Surgery and Immunology at Arizona, and is a leading authority on transplant options for patients with diabetes mellitus.

Dr Rainer Gruessner has received numerous accolades during the course of his career in medicine. He received the Innovation Award from the University of Arizona, where he was appointed Chair of the Surgery Department at its College of Medicine in 2007. Gruessner also received the Physician of the Year Award from the Pima County Medical Association.

That includes his time at the University of Minnesota, where his roles included being Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery, Director of the Intestinal Transplant Program, Co-Director of the Pancreas Transplant Program, and a tenured Professor of Surgery.
