F. Chris Garcia: Native Son of New Mexico Many people leave their hometowns shortly after high school to take on new endeavors, to explore the world that is laid out before them. Each path is different and unique; some will take you far away from your roots ;other paths will lead you back home. The latter was the case for F. Chris Garcia, a 13th generation New Mexican and a 4th generation Albuquerquean, who graduated from Valley High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1957 and would go on to attend the University of New Mexico to study Political Science. Garcia would complete both his undergraduate and post-graduate studies at the University of New Mexico before going to California to pursue a Ph. D. After completing his Ph. D. at the University of California, Davis, and teaching for a year at Fullerton College in Fullerton, California, he would return home to New Mexico and live out his dream job as a professor for the University of New Mexico. Once back at the University of New Mexico, he would start his climb up the professorial and administrative staff hierarchy. In the administrative area, he began with the position of Assistant Director of the Division of Government Research Institute for Social Research and Development at UNM. From here, F. Chris Garcia’s administrative role at the University of New Mexico became decidedly more important as he would be selected as Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences a few years later, and then Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences just a few more years after that. But Garcia wouldn’t stop there, in 1993 and later in 1998 he was selected in national searches to assume the role of Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs proceeded by his being named President of the University of New Mexico in 2002. Garcia has 48 years of experience under his belt as student, faculty, and administrative staff at UNM and has been recognized and awarded for his dedication to the betterment of not only the academic community of the University of New Mexico, but the community of Albuquerque, New Mexico. His wife, Sandy, and their two daughters all have degrees from the University of New Mexico, illustrating the proud tradition of higher education in his family and in his native land of New Mexico.
