Habiba Abubakar - A Source of Comfort and Support to the Poor Habiba Abubakar, longtime philanthropist and head of the Foundation for the Elderly and the Poor, continues to aim towards meeting Nigeria’s crisis of poverty and corruption face to face, and to provide struggling Nigerian children and the elderly have the important resources, basics and educational opportunity they need to begin the long and difficult climb out of a challenging situation. Through the Elderly and the Poor, a self-funded NGO founded in 2006, Abubakar is able to take on the region’s poverty epidemic, and to continue serving a population that may otherwise go without. There are four basic populations both Hajia Habiba Abubakar and her foundation are geared towards helping, each one facing a unique set of challenges and obstacles. The Elderly Both Abubakar and the EAP serve as a source of hope, inspiration and independence to Nigeria’s elderly population, one that is often subject to a lower quality of life, as well as an undue lack of independence. By providing such essentials as facilities, food, outings, gifts, information and even cleaning services to Nigeria’s elderly, Abubakar and EAP continue to be an integral source of support in terms of helping older people retain peace of mind, independence and dignity. Homeless Children Habiba Abubakar and the EAP self-fund a safe house for homeless Nigerian Children throughout both the capital city of Abuja and the surrounding area. Their goal is to serve homeless youth by providing an important source of refuge and sanctuary from the challenges of street life, and to provide every homeless child the medical care, education, food and comfort they need to achieve fair and equal opportunity. Orphaned Children The EAP is an important resource of hope and support to the local orphaned youth population. Not only does Habiba Abubakar and her team seek to provide clean water, food, shelter and medical care to Nigerian orphans, but to also provide the training and education these children need to attain self-sufficiency as developing young adults, and to receive the framework of love and support they need to become more active, productive and successful Nigerian citizens. Disabled Children Disabled children are often at a special disadvantage when it comes to educational and professional opportunity and development. Hajia Habiba Abubakar and EAP seek to help disabled children in terms of skill development, work-related education and access to much need mobility equipment. EAP is also passionate about creating awareness of the special challenges and discrimination disabled people face as they try to attain self-sufficiency and independence.
