John Church JMI - Laguna Beach Coastal Reserve John Church JMI is an entrepreneur with more than twenty years of experience in the sports and entertainment sponsorship industry. He currently makes his home in Laguna Beach, California, in Orange County. He is a devoted family man "with three beautiful daughters and a gorgeous wife," he says, and he loves nothing more than spending quality family time with them. One of the great attractions of the area is the Laguna Beach coast and its protected tide pools. John Church JMI is a supporter of the Laguna Ocean Foundation and is one of about two hundred trained docents, or guides, who show visitors the tide pools and their unique ecosystems. As he knows, there are different zone areas for the beaches and tide pools, which refer to the high and low tide areas and water line. As a trained docent, John Church JMI says that the Splash Zone is the area that is above the high tide line. Most of its water coverage comes from sea spray, hence the name Splash Zone. The common species found living in the Splash Zone are small acorn barnacles, sea lettuce, and the periwinkle snail, all of which are able to withstand long periods of exposure. The High Zone is the area that is usually covered when the tide is high. It is home to larger acorn barnacles, as well as limpets and chitons. The Mid Zone, John Church JMI explains to visitors, is home to three species of seastar, the mussel, and the gooseneck barnacle. The mussel beds, he says, provide the unique color and texture of this zone. Last is the Low Zone, or low tide zone, which is mixed with sea life that can be found in intertidal and subtidal habitats. Because the intertidal zone provides more food, shelter and protection it is inhabited by more species than are other zones. John Church JMI says that the tide pools are fragile ecosystems that can easily be damaged by human activity. It can =take many years for a damaged tide pool to recover. Since all of the zones are protected by law, visitors are cautioned not to pick up any sea life they may happen across. People who do can be fined as much as one thousand dollars. He says that the Laguna Ocean Foundation is dedicated to protecting the area's coastal reserve. By educating the public about this delicate ecosystem, volunteers like John Church JMI are helping to manage and sustain the coastline for future generations.
