Karen Dilworth, a professional with more than 20 years of dental assisting experience, understands what is needed to become a certified assistant, and seeks to provide information on who and what is involved in the certification process.

Education Those seeking to become a dental assistant, says Dilworth, can generally accomplish their goal in as little as 9 to 11 months, though many institutions offer an accelerated track towards certification. The education needed by prospective assistants is generally provided through academic programs at vocational schools, universities, community colleges, technical institutes and dental schools around the nation.

Accreditation Dental Assisting programs are currently all accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, or CODA, says Karen Dilworth. To date, there are about 270 CODA-accredited dental assisting programs throughout the nation, leaving the aspiring dental assistant a multitude of options when seeking the necessary training. Certification Dental Assistant Certification is achieved by passing a comprehensive examination, one that allows academic professionals the opportunity to carefully evaluate the candidate’s knowledge. As Dilworth knows, most assistants who are seeking national certification take a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) examination created and provided by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). This certification exists to assure members of the public that the professional dental assistant is competent and prepared to assist in providing dental care. Dental Assistants are only eligible to take this examination if they have undergone and successfully completed a CODA-accredited dental assisting program. Different states may require more in terms of qualifications or examinations in order for an individual to practice as a dental assistant. Karen Dilworth is proud of her accomplishments as a dental assistant, and to have had the opportunity to work with so many talented and dedicated professionals during her career.
