Karen Gaba - A Passion Rekindled Summary: Karen Gaba has found a career in an old passion of hers. Location: Venice, FL Karen Gaba had a passion for sports and swimming from a young age. She started swimming competitively at just five years old, something that she would continue to do throughout high school. After graduating high school, Karen was offered a position at Bankers National Life Insurance where she would work for twelve years. Once Bankers National Life Insurance decided to relocate, Karen had to find a new job. She decided to look toward her childhood passion of swimming.
Karen Gaba knew that she wanted to do something different. She enrolled in classes at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania to pursue a degree in Health and Physical Education, which she would achieve in 1997. By 1999, she would take her first position coaching swimming as an assistant swim coach for the Tappan Zee High School Boys’ Junior Varsity Swim Team. By 2002, Karen had become the Varsity Swim Coach for Tappan Zee; she would lead the boys’ swim team to an 18-4 record and consecutive Rockland County Championships. Tappan Zee was where she initially created competitive training workouts for both the girls’ and boys’ teams, but she would take her training techniques to other schools, finding success wherever she coached. Six years after obtaining her Bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education she went back to school to obtain her Master’s degree in Special Education. She achieved her Master’s degree in 2003 from Long Island University, by which time she was in the midst of achieving success at Tappan Zee High. By 2004, she would move on to coach for a new school, Millburn High, where she improved the team record from 1-7 to 4-4 and increased swim team enrollment from 12 members to 25 within just a year. From Millburn, Karen went to Jefferson High where the boys’ and girls’ teams broke nine school records in their first season with Karen as coach. Karen led the boys’ team to their first undefeated season and was honored by the New Jersey Herald as Coach of the Year in 2007 and again in 2010.
