Michael Kimner - Energy Industry Veteran Michael Kimner has worked for over twenty years in the energy industry. He quickly rose in the ranks from an entry-level position at Duke Energy Merchants to upper management, eventually becoming CEO of the company in 2001. Kimner graduated with a degree in Business Administration from the University of Maine and started his career in the burgeoning energy industry immediately after he earned his degree. After bouncing around the country as a young man, Kimner now lives near Charleston, South Carolina with his wife and two kids. Michael Kimner joined many distinguished University of Maine alumni who have made many contributions to society over the years. Maine graduates have gone on to become Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winners in their professional careers, as well as Oscar and Tony winners, military leader, and television stars. Kimner wanted to make a splash in the energy industry after he got his degree, and immediately started his climb to the top. He quickly established himself as invaluable to Duke Energy when he started at the company, and through his smart work habits and networking, became CEO of the company before the age of forty. Joining a great tradition of Maine graduates, Michael Kimner hopes to be included on the school’s “notable alumni” list before his career is over. Michael Kimner has made many contributions to the business community as well as his local community over the years, and he hopes to continue his work within the energy sector. Kimner has created opportunities for others as well during his climb to the top. He has always looked for excellent workers on every level that he can bring with him to help him succeed at the next level of the corporate ladder. Kimner made himself available for anyone needing help both in his home community near Charleston, and at Duke Energy. He now has a wife and two kids, who he likes to spend time with. He coaches his children’s football and baseball teams and participates in the community by volunteering with youth organizations and attending as many of his children’s volleyball, baseball, football, and basketball games and practices as he can. Michael Kimner has since left Duke Energy to pursue a career as a consultant for other companies. He has made many friends and allies in the industry and wants to contribute to their success. Kimner doesn’t know how long he plans on being a consultant, but he likes the time it allows him to have with his kids. He also enjoys his time as an Assistant Scoutmaster with a local Boy Scout Troop. He has been an Eagle Scout since 1980.
