Escamilla is at the forefront of everimproving research and medical developments and he is always working on sharing this information through publications, through media appearances and multiple public forums where he can share the state of physical therapy treatments and sports medicine. Rafael Escamilla has a fascinating background, including his educational history. He studied at Walla Walla University in Walla Walla, Washington, where he graduated with an Associate of Arts in 1980. He majored in Mathematics and Physical Education and received a Bachelor of Arts in 1983 at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon. He received a Master of Science from Washington State University in 1987. There he engaged in a major area of study in biomechanics and a minor area of study in exercise physiology. In 1995, he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree at Auburn University. He focused on the major area of study in biomechanics and a minor area of study in exercise physiology and nutrition. Later, he received a Master of Physical Therapy from Elon University. This is a tremendous body of education and achievements he has set his career upon. He is also a three-time national and international powerlifting champion. As a collegiate athlete, he played in three sports and has taken his personal experiences in sports, training and injuries into the body of his profession. Escamilla has received numerous awards for his leading research and academic career. For example, he received the Physical Therapy Alumni Award from Elon University. He achieved the honor of the Outstanding Scholarly and Creative Activity Research Award for the College of Health and Human Services.
