Trenton J Dierkes - What Every Stamp Collector Should Know About Stamp Preservation Whether you are a professional stamp collector or fun collector who has just started a stamp collecting hobby, you must know how to preserve your stamps. Since you will be collecting old stamps, it is very important you know how to preserve them. Trenton J Dierkes is an avid stamp collector who has been collecting stamps since he was a child and has built up an impressive stamp collection. Physical Force – When handling stamps you need to be extremely careful because physical force can destroy the stamp. General use such as handling the stamps, vibration, impact shock and other unforeseen accidents can damage your stamps. To prevent this, you might want to keep your stamp collection in cabinets out of reach of children, and avoid letting people handle your stamp albums. Storage – Neglecting to take care of your stamp collection can also cause damage to your stamps. You must take care to store your stamps in a place that is not prone to extreme heat and moisture fluctuations. Moisture can affect paper and destroy your precious stamp collection. Some of the worst damage to stamps are because of the way they have been stored. Sometimes the materials used to protect stamps can damage them. Paper with a high content of acid can eventually cause discoloration and deterioration. If you are using paper-based albums, you might want to choose paper that has a very low acid content, or rather use special archival paper made with a lower level of wood pulp. Plastic storage materials can be used to store stamps and protect them from environmental damage. However, since plastic reacts when it is exposed to sunlight and will turn yellow. Due to this, stamp albums use a very thin sheet of plastic that is designed to resist the chemical reaction as much as possible. Mounting Stamps Probably the best way to preserve stamps is to mount them on specially prepared paper sheets or in an album. Preserving stamps also includes preserving the glue on the back of the stamp. You cannot use the glue on the stamp to fix it to the stamp album. Instead, you will need to use stamp hinges with adhesive backing to store your stamps in a stamp album. If you need to preserve unused stamps, you might need to use specially prepared stamp mounts that allow the stamps to be placed in an album where they are not in contact with the paper. Trenton J Dierkes has been collecting stamps for several years and has managed to maintain his entire stamp collection in excellent condition.
