William Acker Miami - Looking the Part William Acker of Miami is a great believer in the saying that the clothing makes the man. He is a sales representative for an automotive parts distributor, and takes great pride in his appearance. "Nine times out of ten, people are going to judge you by what you look like," says William Acker of Miami. "That's just the way it is. You hear a lot about relaxed attitudes toward wearing a suit every day, and how every day is like casual Friday. Well, I don't buy it. At the end of the day, it may be true that delivering results is the most important thing. But if you don't look the part, and if you aren't closing deals because you dress like a slob, then how are you going to be able to deliver those results?" Studies have shown that people make judgments about others within seconds of first meeting them, says William Acker of Miami. "And then, for the next minute or two, we're trying to confirm that first impression. It's all very psychological and I don't pretend to be an expert on the subject. But that's what the studies tell us, so I don't leave anything to chance." William Acker of Miami takes great pride in his personal appearance. He has made personal grooming something of an art form. He says that he gets his hair cut every couple of weeks, and even though he shaves with a straight razor every morning he keeps an electric razor in his desk, in order to do a little touch-up work when an important last-minute meeting comes along. But his personal appearance does more than make a favorable impression on customers and would-be customers, says William Acker of Miami. It also has a direct affect on his state of mind. "I'm a pretty confident guy to begin with," he says, "but when I'm heading into a meeting and I know I'm looking sharp, then it gives me a total boost." Dressing like a professional, he says, helps him to think like one, too. William Acker of Miami says that the great irony in all of this is that he has never been one to judge a book by its cover. "I try not to be so shallow as to always go by my first impressions of someone. I won't judge another guy harshly because he has a stain on his jacket. But the business world is really competitive, and even cutthroat sometimes, so you have to give yourself every edge that you can. Look the part, and be the part."
