William T Gholson - Improving Gas Mileage William T Gholson has been in the auto parts distribution business for more than fifteen years, and has been interested in cars and auto mechanics for much longer. He is currently rebuilding and restoring a 1966 MGB, and as a high school junior restored and rebuilt at 1965 Ford Falcon, which he proceeded to drive for the next twelve years. “There are some things you can do to your car that will keep it in good running condition for years, or at least get you better gas mileage,” he says. “There are things that don’t require anything in the way of specialized knowledge; the kinds of things just about anyone with an opposable thumb can do.” One of the things that almost anyone can do to their car is to replace its Mass Air Flow Sensor. “This is what measures the air flow as it enters the engine,” says William T Gholson. “It sends the measurements to the engine’s computer, which in turn regulates the fuel injection, the ignition system, and the shifting. When it gets dirty then the information that it sends won’t be accurate, which effects fuel economy. So it’s a good idea to replace it.” He rate this task as an easy one. Another car part most can replace without much trouble is the Oxygen Sensor. “The oxygen sensor monitors the exhaust flow before and after the catalytic converter,” he says. “This data, too, is sent to the engine computer, which adjusts the fuel injection if need be. As it wears out the data it sends becomes less accurate. It’s a good idea to replace it after about a hundred thousand miles.” He said this was a moderately difficult job. Another easy job, he says, is replacing the air filter. “Its name says it all,” William T Gholson says. “It filters the air as it comes into the engine. A dirty one will affect your gas mileage for the worse, and the older the car, the older the negative impact. You should replace them regularly – usually whenever you get a car tuned up. But it’s easy to do on your own, too.” William T Gholson also recommends checking the air pressure on your car’s tires on a regular basis. “All tires naturally lose air,” he says. “So you should check the air pressure at least once a month. When tires are low on air, or worn out or out of alignment, it can reduce fuel economy. So I tell people to get a good air gauge and keep an eye on tire pressure.” Finally, he says it’s a good idea to replace spark plugs. This is a little trickier than some jobs, but he says if you’re comfortable with tools it isn’t too hard. New spark plugs, says William T Gholson, will also result in an engine that runs more efficiently. For more information visit at here : https://www.smore.com/u/williamtgholson
