In the Golden Age of the 1600 and 1700s, Holland’s impressive fleets of wooden ships dominated the oceans. It was during this period that wealthy Dutch people started having their own dedicated pleasure vessels built. They were called ‘jachten’, which ultimately gave us the English and international term ‘yachts’. Yachting therefore literally and metaphorically had its origin in the Netherlands. Today, thousands of classic yachts are still in circulation, many of them over a century old.
