What is QBIC Fab Lab? It's a ​Digital Fabrication Laboratory open to everybody​ who wants to ​turn ideas into reality​ through shared knowledge. Our collaborative space allows and inspires people and entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into new prototypes, products and businesses by giving them access to a range of advanced digital manufacturing technologies and methodologies such as: laser cutters, 3D printers, 3D scanners, CNC routers and electronics. Our Mission To support, promote and accelerate ideas into products, which allow the development of high-value local entrepreneurships and to develop social innovation processes through digital manufacturing and open knowledge. Our ultimate vision is to be internationally referenced as one of the finest digital fabrication labs in the Middle East. Main Purpose of the Internship The Fab Intern ​must be a passionate, dynamic and a committed person, who has the skills and abilities to effectively work in teams and under pressure. The main goal for the intern is to be part of the preparation processes, administration, facilitation, documentation, evaluation, and other duties assigned to any Fab Lab project. The ​Fab Intern will also have the possibility of being considered as a possible assistant of projects or workshops, depending on the degree of experience and his/her dedication towards the work assigned. The internship program includes the use of cutting-edge technology with the use of problem-solving skills to create a tangible experience. This opportunity will not only help you grow as a professional, but will also develop your interpersonal skills, allowing you to open your mind to different perspectives. What to Expect From Us? 1. Learn about Digital Fabrication: In this internship process, you will receive a series of technical trainings that will allow you to learn how to use digital manufacturing equipment such as laser cutter, 3D printing, electronics and programming, CAD - CAM software, among others. You will also get ongoing mentoring/dialogue throughout the period. 2. Access to a Wonderful Space: You will have the possibility to use all the Fab Lab equipment in an unlimited way, as long as it does not interfere with any project or service of the Lab. In addition to having a space that has all the possibilities and equipment to innovate, it will allow you to increase and develop your technical abilities to the fullest. . 3. Increase your Network Working in the Fab Lab will allow you to develop yourself in a multidisciplinary environment, full of talented people eager to collaborate and work as a team. You will work on real projects with our wonderful community, from school students to entrepreneurs, and even to develop projects for the most important companies and institutions in Qatar. What We Expect From You? 1. Responsibility, Respect and Loyalty: Being selected as one of the Fab Lab Interns means a great responsibility and commitment to our goals, values and schedules. The intern must show a professional and responsible behavior towards the projects and processes developed at the Fab Lab. In addition, it is fundamental to treat all the people with great respect and to always be willing to help. 2. Be Careful, Be Alert: Something fundamental that the intern must take into account at all times, is to be attentive and prepared to solve any problem, whether technical, design-related or conceptual, always requesting first the guidance of the Fab Lab team, but at the same time having the initiative to seek solutions that do not compromise any person or any equipment. 3. Self-reliance and Proactivity:


Working in the Fab Lab requires the ability to independently solve problems and not wait for answers; not expecting someone to tell you what to do, instead proposing possible actions that improve the Lab, and applying this to both internal and external activities. Required Qualifications Priority will be given to people who already have a basic knowledge of Fablab machines. Experience with or interest in prototyping design, mechanical engineering, electronics, mechatronics is strongly preferred. Detail oriented, punctual, and dependable. Basic knowledge to work with 2D and 3D CAD software (3D parametric modelling is a plus). Basic Arduino programming skills, knowledge of coding, wiring, and programming microcontrollers is preferred. Ability to solder and understand basic circuit design preferred. Strong interpersonal skills, communication skills, and excellent customer service skills required. Interested in creative experiments and digital tinkering. Ability to take initiative, work, and troubleshoot in a fast-paced work environment. Ability to learn new technology quickly required. Bilingual in Arabic or English preferred.

More about FabLab After the first month, the interns will be given the flexibility to identify which unit they are most interested in working with. To help better understand this, please find the division of each unit below. FabLab is divided into four units to run smoother operations in the Lab. Engagement Unit

Tech- Support Unit

Management Unit is responsible for the Interaction with customers to process orders (projects and services.) Responsible for receiving the customers and giving short tour around the lab.

Project unit is responsible for the coordination, monitoring, tracking and all the necessary steps taken for the smooth production process and delivery of client projects.

Training unit manages to contribute to video tutorials development, delivery of workshop(s) whenever needed and contributes to the content development and proposals for future workshops.

Tech-support manages the raw material coordination, waste control procedures, and facilities cleaning. It is also responsible for equipment and machinery maintenance.

Internship Structure Candidates who meet the required qualifications of our internship program will be interviewed by our team members, after which the intern will be given the opportunity to be part of QBIC FabLab based on the structure below. Internship Phase 1 ●

Intern will be provided with basic training sessions as well as introductions to all the equipment available in the Lab. Intern will be given the flexibility to learn, explore and rotate around different units and operations of the Lab. Intern will be asked to assist with different activities of the Lab, such as weekly cleanups, preparing for the workshops, assisting in arranging materials etc.

Internship Phase 2 ●

By the end of the first phase of the internship, the interns will be given more specific tasks based on the interests they have highlighted. Intern will be assigned to work alongside team members of different units based on their skills demonstrated in the first month. By the end of the second phase, the intern will be asked to provide a proposal for the final month, highlighting the project of interest he/she would like to develop for the final phase of the internship.

Internship Phase 3 ●

Intern will coordinate and discuss the project proposal with the team. On approval, the intern will be asked to start the project. By the end of the final phase, the intern will present to the whole team, the final project as well as all the tasks he/she did in duration of the internship.


Terms and Conditions

Please note that this internship is an unpaid 3 months full-time internship, which requires the intern to complete 40 hours per week. By the end of the first month, the intern will be evaluated on their performance of keeping the Lab clean, ​it is extremely important to keep the lab organized and well managed as this will also affect their evaluation.

Monthly meetings will be scheduled to analyze intern’s performance in terms of dedication, positive attitude and active engagement in the Lab. It is compulsory for the intern to be present in all the meetings.

Please note that this internship does not guarantee a future hiring position in the Lab. Our main goal is to develop a strong bond with our interns to contribute to the growing knowledge of digital fabrication in Qatar and beyond.

Please note you are not insured by QBIC Fab Lab insurance as you are not employed. It is therefore important you are insured by your home.
