Arabic Teachers’ Roundtable WISE 2015 November 2-5


About the Roundtable Educators of Arabic Language from around the globe convened in Doha, Qatar for the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE): “Investing for Impact: Quality Education for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth.” Thirty three educators from Canada, Brazil, the United States, United Kingdom, and Qatar were invited to take part in a roundtable titled, “Effective Teaching of Arabic Language & Culture in High School: Issues, Approaches, and Principles.” The session, focused on Arabic pedagogy intended for high school students, addresses the growing gap in language learning essentials at the pre-university level.


Abderhaman Lamane ✤

What I Hope to Gain: "I hope to gain new ideas on how to promote my Arabic program at school, and learn more about the use of technology in teaching Arabic.”


Alexander (Sander) Porcelli ✤

Grades Teaching: 8-12

What I Hope to Gain: "I hope to collaborate with other teachers to discuss connecting our classrooms to help students feel part of a global community of learners. I also hope to discuss different contexts in which Arabic is being taught in order to understand where my school and my program fits in global Arabic instruction" ✤

What I Hope to Gain: "I hope to present my Arabic classrooms, my teaching ideas and my students' creative genius to the world, and then bring back the best ideas, practices, and projects from the world to my classrooms."


Fatima Zahraoui ✤

School: Tallwood High School, Virginia Beach, VA

Grades Teaching: 9-12

What I Hope to Gain: "I hope to learn about proven ways and instructional strategies to expand the Arabic program in my area. I also hope to network with people that might be instrumental in achieving that goal."


Fatma El Turky ✤

School: Global Personalized Academics, Southern Lehigh School District, Mifflin County High School, PA

Grades Teaching: 8 & 11

What I Hope to Gain: "My goal is to make class presentation more effective to maximize the students’ skills in language creative usage in speaking and writing. I would also like to focus on program and outcome assessment, and the challenge of teaching classes with a mix of heritage and non-heritage students."


Jennifer Kamal ✤

School: Queen Elizabeth High School

Grades Teaching: 10-12

What I Hope to Gain: "The expectations are high and the limits are none. I would like my program to be unique in a sense that students choose what they would like to learn and how. My participation in the Roundtable will be my opportunity to see what other high school teachers are offering and learn about cool ideas."


Lhousseine Guerwane ✤

School: The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Sciences in Kentucky & Western Kentucky University, KY

What I Hope to Gain: "My participation in this program helps bring top-notch instruction in Arabic to students who have no other such opportunity. By becoming the best, most effective teacher I can be, I hope to reach and inspire even more learners of Arabic."

What I Hope to Gain: "I hope to improve my teaching techniques in Arabic so that I can develop an immersive setting for students to engage in. I also hope to be able to connect with other teachers to develop curriculum materials and assessments."

What I Hope to Gain: "I would like to have a chance to share my experience and learn from my colleagues. I also hope to contribute to a larger project which will provide the new generation of Arabic teachers with effective and meaningful strategies and ideas in order for them to continue servicing our beautiful language."

What I Hope to Gain: "I hope that cross cultural interaction among Arabic teachers will cultivate new styles and innovations for teaching that will aid in student understanding and interest of the Arabic language."

What I Hope to Gain: "I hope to contribute with my experience and I really want to learn more about the science of enchanting children and teens while we share linguistic and cultural information."


Rasha Elomeri ✤

What I Hope to Gain: "I hope to validate my own philosophy of teaching through interaction with other teachers. I also hope to practice practical classroom strategies and teaching methods that I can use in my classroom when I go back. I also would like to gain access to what other colleagues are doing to ensure student success."

What I Hope to Gain: "I hope to exchange successful experiences with my colleagues and gain an in depth look at the state of Arabic instruction in the US."
