As one sufferer with serious lower back pain, I see that many people around me have office related health problems; I decided to solve this problem by using my graphic design skills.

What’s the issue There are 24,000 mid sized companies in the San Francisco bay area. In the last 4 years, decreased on-the-job productivity and employee absence because of office-related health problems have resulted in significant costs to the companies of more than $260 billion each year. Therefore, health issues have become an enormous burden on today’s society because employee productivity directly affects company profits.

WHAT ARE OFFICE RELATED HEALTH PROBLEMS? Office workers are among the most unhealthy group of people in the labor market as the nature of the role means that many employees have bad health habits. Here are a few biggest health problems resulting from working in an office.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Problem: Any motion that is repeated over and over again can cause injury or pain, according to occupational-health-focused Denver Chiropractor Dr. T. Randall Eldridge. But carpal tunnel syndrome isn’t just pain or soreness from too much typing. It’s the tingling, numbness, itching or even sharp pain caused when a nerve that runs through the forearm is compressed by swollen ligaments and bones in the wrist, according to the National Institutes of Health.


BACKGROUND

Eyestrain

Problem: Office workers who spend hours a day staring at a computer screen might tell you that after a certain amount of time, their vision gets blurry and their eyes generally become more sensitive. Those symptoms (as well as too-watery or toodry eyes, a headache or a sore neck) could be indications of eyestrain, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Problem: Sitting for hours on end, particularly if you have bad posture, can be devastating to your body over time if you don’t get moving on a regular basis. And back pain is actually a major reason for missed work for adults of all ages, according to the Georgetown University Center on an Aging Society.

Other Joint Problems

Problem: The human body is meant to move, and staying in one position for too long can make joints feel tight. Sitting at a desk especially shortens and tightens the hip flexors, the muscles than help pull your legs toward your body, according to the Yoga Journal. And tight hip flexors can actually contribute to back pain as well since tight hips force the pelvis to tilt forward, compressing the back, Yoga Journal says.

My goal is to prevent office related health problems, build up good habits to make office workers healthier in the office.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER? “ Many of us in modern society have jobs which involve being inactive in cubicles all day.” -Dr. Emma Wilmot from the New York Times. Many office computer users are now inactive for as much as 15 hours per day. Those hours consume a majority of a person’s life. The average adult spends 50 to 70 percent of their time inactive. Prolonged inactivity can cause a lot of office related health problems that damage personal health and company profits. Decreased on-the-job productivity and employee absence have resulted in significant costs to companies of more than $260 billion each year.

RESEARCH The next step after I had defined a clear objective for my thesis was to research and explore as much as I could in order to deliver an effective design solution for the issue. The purpose of the research was to find out more about the topic and its related issues. In the early stage of my project, I worked on research at the same time as ideation development and design explorations. It involved a lot of reading, investigation and sketching. To speak to my real audience, I did using testing and prototyping of my design deliverables. It was a long process for me. However, I did gain insights that were key for this project during my research journey.

WHO’S THE AUDIENCE? As one sufferer with serious lower back pain, I see that many people around me have office related health problems. When I decided to do this project. I found out that almost all health organizations aim to help office workers get better after they have health issues, rather than finding a way to help them prevent problems. Therefore, my target audience is office workers from age 21 to 32, who have just graduated, and have been white-collar workers in an office less than 5 years. I hope to prevent office related health problems and make people healthier in the office, which will also improve their work quality and create a win win situation for both the company and employees.

WHAT DO OFFICE WORKERS THINK? Insights from first hand users. To contact to my audience, I spoke with office workers on the street when they were having break in the San Francisco financial district area, I visited several offices in the bay area and created an event for people who are office workers or were office workers so they could join in to share their thoughts about this project. Exchanging ideas with people was the best way for me to know what my audience feels and needs. In order to learn more about my core target audience, I sent out sets of questionnaires online to ask office workers for some information that could help me gain more insight about their office related heath problems, experience and behavior.

COMPETITOR REPORT 01 Nike+ FuelBand

This Nike FuelBand is really what they say it is—“it’s not for everybody,” people must have the mentality to stay fit and motivated, this is one step towards it. The FuelBand feels nice and durable, it tracks down your daily activity ,it has reminders to keep you moving and best of all it has a watch. People recommend this FuelBand to athletes or people who to be motivated to stay fit. People want to could record activity such as diet, sleep, hydration and heart rate. Advantages Very motivating Earn points and even badges Nice looking Friends group See how each other is doing Nice customer service Nice to see data Weaknesses The pedometer is not accurate not even close Doesn’t record the steps on a treadmill correctly Can not sync with the Nike database Limited information, only shows how many FuelBand points people made. Designed for the running, weight training, cycling. Other activities Do not get recorded well. The Bottom Line The FuelBand SE doesn’t offer any earth-shattering changes from its predecessor, but its design, longer battery life and enhanced social features ensure it continues to be a solid choice among fitness trackers.

COMPETITOR REPORT 02 Fitbit

Fitbit pitches its newest wearable as a superwatch. The Fitbit Surge is part smartwatch, part GPS running watch and part activity tracker. It can display text messages and calls from your smartphone, can track your runs and daily activities, and includes all day heart rate tracking, which, theoretically, should help improve sleep tracking at night and estimated calorie burn throughout the day. Advantages The Fitbit Surge has an always-on display, vibration for a silent alarm, automatic sleep tracking, all day heart rate and GPS to track runs. Weaknesses The watch is big and bulky. It can’t be worn while swimming or when in the shower. The accuracy of the heart rate is questionable when working out and there’s no feedback or coaching features. Battery life could be better and notifications are limited to text messages and calls. The Bottom Line All day heart rate tracking is a step in the right direction, but the smart features aren’t nearly smart enough and the fitness side of the Surge is too basic to justify the higher price.

Weaknesses The Jawbone Up24 lacks a screen to quickly check your progress. The Bottom Line If having a screen isn’t a priority, the Jawbone Up24’s superb app, clever advice, and comfy fit are hard to resist.

COMPETITOR REPORT 04 Lumo Lift

The Lumo Lift addresses a metric that few other wearable fitness trackers up to this point have, that being your posture. It does this by resting against your upper torso (or décolletage), using hardware sensors and algorithms to measure your body’s alignment. Every time you put it on, you calibrate it, telling Lift what posture you want to maintain—whether that’s perfectly upright, or slightly slouchy. Advantages The Lumo Lift goes beyond typical fitness metrics to measure your posture. It’s also comfortable to wear and can even pass as an accessory. Weaknesses Throughout testing, user enjoyed wearing the Lift. However, it’s up to you to tell the Lift what posture you want, and you don’t get any data on how to improve your posture. The Lift also doesn’t offer sleep or elevation tracking. The Lift app offers too much design and not enough data. The Bottom Line The Lumo Lift offers a fresh alternative to other fitness trackers, but its limited features will disappoint anyone who wants to track multiple metrics. It’s only for lifting your posture, nothing else.

PRELIMINARY DEVELOPMENT WHAT’S THE DESIGN SOLUTION GOING TO BE? After having done much research, I’ve found out that the leading determinant of health related productivity loss is office workers unhealthy workplace habits. Therefore, I want to use my graphic design skills to motivate office workers to change to healthier habits in their daily life. My goal is to increase healthy office habit and thereby increase the number of healthy employees in the workplace. Initial conception and visual exploration helped find the possible solution that would let me reach my objective. While gathering the findings and insights, I also worked on the concept development and visual exploration. The feedback that I got from the survey told me what my design system should look like.

LOGO-MARK EVOLUTION Actio visual identity program is more than a symbol. It is a combination a shape and name together, to bring energetic, positive and Actio spirit to life. This manual provides technical information about these important visual elements. The symbol is graphically simple so it will function in all media: electronic, print, on-screen and display. The design works in both large and small scales. Proper use of the symbol is the cornerstone of the visual identity program. By following the guidelines outlined in this manual, the consistent application of the symbol will be ensured. Use only the approved electronic files for the symbol.

Logo-mark: The graphic symbol of a brand The Actio symbol is constructed from the golden ratio is also called the golden section. It simple geometric shapes and will function in all media: electronic, print, on-screen and display.

Logo-type: the specific typographic treatment of a name The upper case Actio logo is using the same treatment like the logo mark does. it gives people a simple, energetic, and memorable symbol for Actio.

The smartphone has become a part of their life; they use it to connect, share, exercise, and exchange information of various kinds with the rest of the world. Mobile apps offer moveable tools for people who want to track their exercise and movement. I see that an assistive technology often utilized in mobile applications can be implemented and be beneficial to office health problems.

WALK TO WORK MAP User can adjust how many minutes they want to walk. The map provides directions for getting to work by public transportation or private vehicle, combined with walking part of the distance. It calculates total transit time by vehicle and walking combined, to provide users with a customized map to help them get to work on time. The user can see their entire activity summary on a pop up screen after they arrive at the office; the user can also share it with their friends or coworkers.

(i,e, date on their seated posture and sitting time). When they are wearing Actio, their sitting status will automatically go their phone. Users can easily see their scores to recognize sitting status. The posture alert reminds them when they have poor posture or when they have been sitting for a long time. Actio also will give them a vibration to help them make an adjustment.
