Vertical Farm

Transportation Hub in Westwood, Los Angeles Instructor: Gabby Shawcross Collaborator: Gan/ Gege Summer 2017 The project of transportation hub optimizes the transportation system and create a vertical farm with functions of farming, marketing and catering. It gives more job opportunities and efficient transportation to low income group. Meanwhile, it increase the public space and improve the environment of city. The vertical farm uses the form of scaffolding to occupy the aerial space above the road. The scaffolding structure combined with green plant significantly improves the open space. The special image of vertical farm become the central landmark in urban space.

Saloon of Citizen

Cultural Park in Zhaoqing New District Instructor: Encheng Yan Spring 2017 The project of the Cultural Center, the Archive and the Children’s Palace should become the carrier of future public activities in Zhaoqing to create sufficient public vitality, as a real saloon of citizens. To build up a real citizen’s saloon, the design should fully utilize the beautiful landscape environment, make use of the cultural atmosphere of three public buildings as well as set the Cultural Park as the center in order to create a Culture Ecosphere with entertainment, leisure, cultural experience and sightseeing. The buildings are not a single and closed cultural buildings but maximize the sharing and public space to the surroundings, nearby parks and even the whole Zhaoqing New District.

Green to Room

High-Rise Hotel Design Instructor: Yunjiang Wu Spring 2015 The project is a high-rise hotel located in campus which serves for the university visitors, facilities, students and surrounding residents. Although the hotel is a high-rise commercial building, the site is located in the campus with excellent landscape, which requires the designer to consider the nearby environment and avoid the violation to nature landscape. The hotel takes the form of casing construction to build the Green Eco Hotel that strives for the integration with environment. With the casing construction, the hotel can gradually achieve the transition from wetland park to high-rise construction. This green eco hotel is not only improve the peripheral micro-environment but also become the unique landmark enjoyed by citizen

Film Industry O2O

Living Space Under the Background of "Internet+" Instructor: Feng Jihong Fall 2015 When the science and technology develops to a superb level, the space can adjust according to human's demand. Designing space is both procedural and individual. This is a film industrial park which combines the online industrial chain and offline cultural experience. Collecting the requirements of people from online platform and analyzing the data, we can change the status of space in different time that become multi-functional variable space, which promotes efficiency and improves experience. The construction is in a dynamic system, which can be assembled and transformed into various statuses through a standardized inflatable module.

Cloud Spa

BMW Auto Environment Design Instructor: Marta Nowak Collaborator: Abdullah/ Jiahe/ Mia Winter 2017 With the increasing development of technology and society, people require more about high quality of life experience in automobile space. In collaboration with BMW Design Group, we explore more possibilities of human activities in vehicle. The vehicle is called cloud, which is a mobile spa space offering comfortable and static experience for people. We highlight the focal touch points, analyze the body position, combine different activities and then create the position gird as well as develop into a dynamic system. By introducing the inflation system, it is possible to achieve instant reaction to changeable position and multiple activities. For the exterior design, the vehicle can be changed the form by pneumatic structure in order to cater the need of different environment.

Robot Dance

SUPRA-SHOW: Interactive Staging Design Instructor: Gabby Shawcross Collaborator: Gan/ Yi Sun/ Yongsan Huang Winter 2017 This project involves the KUKA robot arms in IDEAS campus to create the robotic interactive show. It combines both the pre-mapped and real-time responsive projection animation to reinforce the movement of projection content (robot arms move and dance, etc), and enhance the interaction between people, robot arms and projection. The robotic movement is combined with projection mapping so it likes a dancing show of robots.

9x9

Festival Light Installation at Bombay Beach Biannual Instructor: Mark Mack/ Gabby Shawcross Winter 2017 The 9*9 is not only an illuminated object, but is also able to generate the dynamic effect of light. The light installation has two main parts, base structure and lantern. And the lantern is comprised by three light boxes that each is a 9*9 matrix of dynamic pixels with LED lights. The LED lights are connected by digital wires so they can be programmed by Arduino. According to different program scripts, the pixels could produce interesting effect from emoji faces to color pattern. With the speculated different kinds of sensors and corresponding programs, the installation can enhance the interactions between light and people so it can greatly enrich the festival experience.

Balloon in the Beat

Public Space Installation in Santa Monica Instructor: Mark Mack/ Gabby Shawcross Fall 2017 In Los Angeles a lot of underrated gap space near the lively neighborhoods. The small size of those roadways and not attractive street facade lead to the scarce crowd and low vitality of those area. The project forms a linear spatial form, trying to generate guiding space, introducing the main street crowd and activating the vitality of the space. The project intend to build up a pop-up installation by using portable and fast setting component; using the projection to create some events and atmosphere thereby attracting people. Interventions aim to improve awareness of social and/or environmental issues, enhance the public sensory experiences with new technology, projection and sound and activate independent and improvised activities that temporarily transform existing urban conditions.

Alameda Urban Game

Community Game Event with AR/ MR in Alameda Instructor: Mark Mack/ Gabby Shawcross Spring 2018

The Alameda Urban Game involves the whole neighborhood and virtual installation as a large-scale orienteering game with different points of games and treasure hunting, which create an didactic and recreative urban game for children and parents to enhance the conciousness of community. It bridges the reality and virtuality, applying the technology of Augment Reality or Mixed Reality with online App on different platforms, such as smartphone, hololens, or cars, to build a virtual game world that requires low investment. This greatest urban game in Alameda increases the interaction among neighborhood and activate the community space, and becomes the new culture of Alameda.

Musical Balloon Cloud

Film-Making for Time-Based Architecture Instructor: Gabby Shawcross Fall 2017 Context: The film talks about a story of a man and a woman who meet and communicate the music with the installation. The intervention using the lighting sculpture explores opportunities to develop the gap space being more attractive and public that encourages performance events and social activities. Concept: The musical lighting cloud can sense the music and change the light that encourage the improvised ensemble or jam session. So the gap becomes a public space with street music atmosphere and a culture space for music fostering. Film structure: The film takes the form of spatial sequence on time-based experiential drawing. The camera shows different perspectives of two characters according to the story develop and the climax happens on the time they meet together.
