ESSENTIALS : the 7 elements of art & design
ESSENTIALS : the 7 elements of art & design
Back to Basics - We’re revisiting the fundamentals for fresh inspiration this fall. Design 101 has taught us that these seven distinct elements produce both simple and complex objects. Line, space, value, color, shape, form, and texture are considered the building blocks to creating all configurations of art and design. Utilizing only some elements will generate a more simplistic design, while including all seven will produce more intricate works of art. In developing our Fall 2021 Collection, we returned to these foundational elements to craft distinctive pieces for you, the artist, to use to design your spaces.

LINE A line is a point moving in space where its length is greater than its width. Existing in two or three dimensional space, line is the foundation of art and design. It’s responsible for implying distance, depth, shape and structure. In addition you can use this element to shorten or lengthen a space.

SPACE A designer should use space as a navigational tool and a functional element. Consider that the spacing between structures is suitable to walk through or to walk around. Use negative space to highlight important features in the room. Similar objects that are side-by-side with narrow spacing between them will create unpleasant tension. However, if they are placed in front of or behind each other they create depth.

VALUE Value is the lightness or darkness a color or hue can be, visualized by a scale or gradient. This element is used to create highlights and shadows and give the illusion of light. Use value to get contrast and make your space more aesthetically pleasing.

SHAPE Shape is defined by a flat two dimensional area surrounded by edges or an outline. If you combine lines to create a square or a triangle then you create shape, the precursor to form.

FORM Using the previous element, shape, by adding value you can create it’s three-dimensional successor, form. There are two types of form: organic and geometric. Geometric forms are mathematical and made with precision. For example: a triangle becomes a pyramid in the third-dimension. Organic form is not symmetrical, it’s free-flowing and often appears in nature. Items: 11140, 11146, 11147, 11184, 10506

TEXTURE The final element of art is texture. Defined as the perceived surface quality of an object, texture is used for comfort and the sensation of touch. By applying different textures you can create a more stimulating atmosphere.
