WEST HOLLYWOOD PRIDE WEHO PRIDE

May 22 - June 30, 2015 Once again the City celebrates Pride month through the cultural contributions of the LGBTQ community with its annual One City One Pride Festival. Activities kick off on Harvey Milk Day, Friday, May 22 and continue through the end of June. On Saturday, June 27 there will be an entire day of theatre in Plummer Park featuring multiple theatre productions which explore the rich history of the City during its 30th anniversary year touching variously on the historical highlights, the arts of drag, the impact of AIDS, and the cultural history of the dance. For more info visit www.weho.org/pride.

WEHO PRIDE TENNIS TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY iTENNIS June 5 - 7, 2015 Location: Plummer Park Tennis Courts, 7377 Santa Monica Blvd. Men’s & Women’s Singles Same-Gender Couples Doubles The City of West Hollywood is proud to host the second USTA sanctioned tennis tournament for same gender couples. The first such event in history was held at the Plaza Racquet Club in Palm Springs in March 2015.

The USTA made history on January 14, 2015 by adding same-gender couples doubles tournaments to its sanctioned list of competitive events in its popular adult division. Up until this date all of the adult family doubles teams were husband and wife. In a USA TODAY Sports article published on January 14, CEO and president, Katrina Adams of the White Plains, N.Y. based USTA said, “We’ve always been about equality and our focus the last 10 years or so been even more on diversity and inclusion, and this is another way of being inclusive.”

4

In the same article, Hall of Famer Billie Jean King was quoted as saying, “This is a great and important step forward for tennis. Tennis is a sport that is equally fun and beneficial for everyone, so it’s nice to know that going forward, we’ll enjoy a greater sense of equality between the lines in adult competition. The makeup of our families in our world is changing, and I’m thrilled to see that tennis also is recognizing that change, and making it easier for same-gender couples to compete.” A player party and celebrity tennis exhibition will take place as part of the L.A. Pride Kick off at the conclusion of finals matches on June 7, 2015. To register for the tournament, enter online at itennisweho.com or tennislink.usta.com. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community and provides a great opportunity to bring Sheriff’s and neighbors together under positive circumstances. National Night Out gives Neighborhood Watch groups an opportunity to host large scale block parties with barbecues, live music, and lots of free giveaways in a festive setting. The Recreation Division participates by hosting Movie Night in the Park in Plummer Park. Major commercial establishments get involved, such as The Gateway in West Hollywood. It’s a night not to be missed when residents can come out and party in the streets!
