CITY NEWS
GROUNDBREAKING FOR PHASE II OF WEST HOLLYWOOD PARK PROJECT COMING THIS SUMMER
Things continue to move forward with Phase II of the West Hollywood Park Project and construction on the new park improvements will start in late summer 2016.
The improvements include a new Aquatic and Recreation Center with a multipurpose sport court, multiple community meeting rooms, a Tiny Tot program, two roof-top pools, and shower and changing facilities. The grand stair component of the building will create an engaging connection between the park and the Aquatic and Recreation Center. With landscaping and stadium-style seating, the grand stair will provide expansive park views and a connection to the respite terrace and roof-top aquatic facilities.
4
A new central large meadow at the heart of the park will be a perfect place for picnics and pick-up sports. The improved park will include children’s play areas that feature resilient play surfacing, universally accessible play equipment, seatwalls, benches and picnic tables. A reimagined commons at the Robertson Boulevard entrance to the park will include a new public art installation by artist Philip K. Smith III, seating areas, canopy trees, and lush drought-tolerant landscaping. The project’s off-leash dog park will include distinct areas for small and large dogs, featuring expanses of open space punctuated by shade trees, small mounds, and turf terraces. The ground material will be artificial “K9” turf which is specifically designed for pet use. Other practical amenities will include water bowl fillers and doggie waste stations. The AIDS Monument, which is a collaboration with artist Dan Tobin and FAM (Foundation for a National AIDS Monument), will also be located within West Hollywood Park. It will be a visually distinct and tranquil area to be experienced in many different ways. From afar it will portray, with a sense of scale, the numbers of people we have lost, the people who remember, and the people who have and continue to advocate for a cure. Inside the monument there will be places for gathering and rallying, places for contemplative conversations and intimate places for reflection and remembrance. Landscape and planting surrounding the monument will echo a quilt motif, a poetic reference to the AIDS quilt. Those are but a few of the many new amenities that are coming to West Hollywood Park. Stay tuned for more updates in upcoming Rec Reader issues. For more information, please visit the project website at www.weho.org/whparkproject

Jennifer Leitham - Jazz
In a world of too much forgettable repetition, Leitham’s music — instrumentally and vocally — is a memorable pleasure. A highly praised, veteran artist whose resume includes gigs with everyone from Woody Herman and George Shearing to Mel Tormé, k.d. lang, and Peggy Lee, Leitham has been a major jazz star in her own right since she transitioned into her true identity in 2001. The story of her public transition from John Leitham to Jennifer Leitham while on tour with Doc Severinson was the subject of the 2012 Outfest audience award winning documentary, “I Stand Corrected.” She has played on over 140 albums, including 10 albums of her own. Leitham’s latest CD, Mood(S)wings, showcases a stellar collection of standards and originals, with Leitham’s remarkable left handed bass playing and her captivating vocals in the spotlight. Join us at 2 pm for a free screening of “I Stand Corrected” with filmmaker Andrea Mayerson. Date: June 26, 2016 | Time: 2 pm movie, 4 pm concert Location: City Hall Community Plaza, 8300 Santa Monica Blvd.
Beat Mosaic California Funk and Soul
Beat Mosaic is a fun, dance-able and hard-hitting California Soul and Groove band anchored in a classic funk sound evoking comparisons to Sharon Jones, the Meters and the J.B’s. A band with influences ranging from rare funk, classic soul, and psychedelic rock to the rhythmic layers and textures of afrobeat and jazz, Beat Mosaic weaves a tapestry of styles into a seamlessly organic and natural groove. Date: July 24, 2016 | Time: 4 pm Location: Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Blvd.
Zetz Klezmer Ensemble Klezmer / Fusion/ World Music
Zetz is an energetic and entertaining ensemble that charms audiences across all age groups and cultural backgrounds. Their original and traditional music is rooted in klezmer traditions of Eastern European Jews, but also fuses sounds from across the globe. These creative musicians draw upon a range of music from lyrical, haunting melodies of the synagogue and folk music to witty and entertaining Yiddish vaudeville songs, from boisterous dances of the Russians and Ukrainians to music with a bit of western classical and rock. During the show Zetz will share stories, history and demonstrations on what klezmer music is in a fun and entertaining way. Date: August 7, 2016 | Time: 4 pm Location: Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Blvd.
MôForró - Brazilian Forró
MôForró plays accordion-driven, hip-swiveling dance music in the traditional “pé de serra” style of forró, featuring accordion, guitar, fiddle, flute, zabumba (Brazilian drum), triangle, voice, and percussion. Since forming in late 2012, MôForró–along with the Forró in L.A. collective–has been integral to the growing popularity of forró as a dance genre throughout Southern California. MôForró has played in major cities throughout the US including San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, and New York and can be seen regularly at Trópico de Nopal Gallery and Art Space in Echo Park. Forró is a Brazilian music that resembles Zydeco. Typically it is danced in partners similar to salsa or cumbia, but we encourage audiences to move in whatever ways they feel. Date: July 10, 2016 | Time: 4 pm Location: Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Blvd.
Mark Christian Miller Jazz/Swing
Mark Christian Miller’s well received second recording “Crazy Moon” was played in rotation on 115 jazz stations nationwide and spent four months on the national charts. His third release “Remembering Page” is to be released in 2016. Miller is a veteran of the jazz scene in Southern California, and is also a well known artist manager. His frequent nightclub appearances have earned him a loyal following and the respect of his peers. Miller will present an entertaining and engaging program of Great American Songbook standards, and off the beaten path classics incorporating swing, blues and Latin rhythms. All About Jazz writes, “Miller’s voice - cheerful, positive - is one of the most welcoming voices in jazz.” Date: August 21, 2016 | Time: 4 pm Location: K ings Road Park, 1000 Kings Rd.
