WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. The there primary category of developable surfaces are rulled surfaces which are cylinders, tangent surfaces and cones. For the cylinders, they are made of paralleled lines and rulings (lines on the sufaces that are paralledled with the direction of extruding a profile curve). The others are similar to the cylinders. Thay all formed of tangent plane and tangent to the surfaces along an entire ruling. At the last, those developable surfaces has unique properties regarded to ruled surfaces.

Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. Because any geometry is formed with two dimensionla patterns. Understanding the develapable surfaces could help the architecs to redefine the gemotry and map them into plane for further consturction. For example, the case of Hjyghe & Le Corbusier Puppet Thteatre. Although it looks like curve , it is based on “rigid structure“ actually.

Pattern A: 4 attractive points sit at the corners of the surface when do ptoffsetpoints and 1 attractive point sits at the centre when do 3Dpaneling.

Pattern B: 1 attractive point sits at the uppermost corner of the surface when do ptoffestpoints and 1 attractive cure crosses the the surface.

Pattern c: 3 attractive points sits along one side of the surface and 1 complicated attractive curve.

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION

Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation?

According to lwanmoto, digital fabrication can be directly referred as a way to manipulate the design process by using digital data. While the digital fabrication relied heavily on the electronic devices and digital software, it makes the design process more convenient for understanding two dimensional representation and combining with three dimentional modeling. Additionally, the digital fabrication could create sophisiticated patterns and design which can not be done by human brain.

Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? First of all, it is a simple way to produce the three dimensional model from its two dimensional design. With folding, new volume will be created between multiple flat surfaces. Next, it makes the material to be self-supporting as there are rigids and stiffs on it.

EXPLORING 3D PANELLING

3 D Paneling - Five vatiable custom modules paneled into a curved suface which provided the complexibility and the transition of lanscape. Four attractive points placed above the corners of the surface and one attractive point located at the middle of one side. Addtionally, there are a U shape attractive cure projected on the surface.
