Chord Functions – Overview Chord functions are used to identify chords by their position and sound relative to a given key. What is the chord function of a Dm chord in a song that’s in the key of C? Since the key of C is made up of the C major scale and D is the second note of that scale, the chord function is ii (see table below). A lower case Roman numeral is used to denote that the chord, Dm, is a minor chord. Playing a Dm chord in a song that’s in the key of C has a certain identifiable sound. We say that it has the sound of a ii chord. This in itself is a bit subjective. It’s almost like saying that a wine has a certain bouquet, or a dish has certain flavor of ginger. But good musicians, like good wine tasters and cooks, will be able to identify correctly what their senses are telling them. Playing an Em chord in a song that’s in the key of D will have the same sound as a Dm chord in the key of C (see table below). That’s because the relationship of the Em chord to the key of D is the same as the Dm chord to the key of C. Both are chord function ii (see table below).

How Chords Are Built Chords are built by stacking notes from a given scale onto each note of that scale. Starting from the “root” of the chord, every other note is picked and stacked to form the chord. The table below demonstrates how 4-note chords are built IN the key of C. Intervals are shown to give a better understanding of actual distances between notes.
