Trini kids food fest - Making good food fun! Healthy eating really is child’s play

Healthy food made fun With free general admission, Trini Kids Food Fest is a 2-day event aimed at getting Trinidad and Tobago to eat itself fitter. Families of all ages are invited to come along and chop, peel and taste their way to a healthier lifestyle. There’ll be cookery demo’s offering plenty of opportunities to get little hands dirty with some of the country’s best-known chefs, live music on our Food Fest stage, exercise classes and lots and lots of laughs. It’s a fun event with a serious intent.

Our mission The aim of the event is to: •• Get the healthy eating message onto the curriculum for schools, medical professionals and ministers •• Encourage parents and children to adopt a healthier lifestyle •• Generate enthusiasm for balanced food options through tasting, sampling and exposure •• Get kids and their parents to take responsibility for their own diet •• Help stop the childhood obesity epidemic in its tracks •• Bring families, communities, food producers and healthcare professionals together with a common aim.

Our message is loud and clear In the three months leading up to Trini Kids Food Fest, we’ve planned $300,000 worth of marketing and PR events to get people thinking, and talking about Kids nutrition. We want to reach grandparent, parents, carers, health professionals, government bodies, teachers and last, but definitely not least, the kids themselves. To do this we are rolling out an advertising campaign across both traditional channels such as newspapers, TV and radio as well as via social media and guerrilla marketing. Our healthy eating message will be everywhere: •• Kicking things off at our media launch event •• Regular press releases to maintain media interest. •• Frequent tweets, Facebook posts and blogs to get the Internet buzzing. •• Awareness raising via our dedicated website www.trinikidsfoodfest.com •• A host of high-profile spokespeople to front the event. •• Plenty of innovative publicity stunts and guerrilla marketing activities to make people sit up and take notice. •• Attention grabbing radio, TV and newspaper advertising campaigns. •• Digital and traditional billboard signage. •• Eye catching flyers distributed to schools, healthcare facilities and homes across the country. •• Promotions and events in public spaces such as recreation grounds and shopping malls.

Some food for thought There’s an obesity epidemic in our country. The financial and emotional costs are already massive and if we don’t start to educate people soon, the situation is just going to get worse. The statistics make uncomfortable reading: •• Recent research carried out by the Food and Agriculture Organisation shows that a quarter of our school-aged children are overweight or obese. •• One third of our children have higher-than normal cholesterol levels. •• Childhood obesity rates have tripled in the last 10 years. •• T&T now ranks as the 5th fattest nation in the world. •• Overweight children invariably grow into unhealthy adults. •• Obesity can lead to serious medical issues such as diabetes and increased risk of heart disease.

The root of the problem This dramatic rise in childhood obesity is put down to a number of changes to our traditional lifestyle and eating habit in recent years. There are more working Mom’s these days which means that families tend to rely more heavily on easy, fast foods rather than healthy, homecooked meals. The way that kids spend their leisure time has also changed. These days, they’re more likely to be sitting in front of a computer than playing football in the streets. Busy families on a budget have got into the habit of eating fried and processed foods and worry that preparing a healthy option will be more expensive and time-consuming.

A force for change The fact is kids who eat better, do better and that’s where Kids Food Fest comes in. Our weekend will turn fussies into foodies, get kids and their parents cooking together and show them that they can make delicious, colourful and healthy food in no time at all. It really is child’s play. Kids love to help in the kitchen and they learn their food habits from their parents which is why we’re making this an event where everybody can get stuck into a whole load of healthy ingredients from cassava to sweet potato, plaintain to mangoes. Our visitors will get a taste for a healthier lifestyle.
