WELCOME TO QUAD’S NEW QUARTERLY BROCHURE From October we are moving to flexible programming, which gives us the opportunity to respond to customer demand, by holding more screenings of films that are proving popular with audiences, and likewise less of those which are not. These will tend to be the bigger films, which we will be screening for at least a week, so if it is something you are keen to see, be sure to catch it the week its “On Release Date”. It may be on for another two or three weeks after that, but this is where we will be more flexible. The rest of our programme will be advertised in the brochure in monthly sections, most with a start date: “Screening from” which means we will be showing them no sooner than that date. Where we have fixed screening dates and times, for NT Live or one-off events and screenings, we will publish them in the brochure so in some cases we will give more notice than we have previously been able to. We are still committed to continue to offer the same diverse range of quality independent, world and Hollywood cinema. This flexible programming is part of a growing national trend which has already been adopted by other major independent cinemas. This development is part of a long history of innovation since we started screening films at Metro Cinema over 25 years ago, during that time the film industry and the way we communicate with audiences has changed substantially. We hope you will enjoy this increased flexibility where we are able to respond much quicker to audiences and as always we welcome any feedback on this or any part of QUAD’s activities.– Adam Buss, QUAD CEO New screening times will be published every Tuesday morning for that week’s films (starting from the Friday up until the following Thursday) Customers will be able to find the film/cinema event listings in the following way: •

Susan MacWilliam: AN ANSWER IS EXPECTED Until 23rd November 2014 QUAD Gallery

AN ANSWER IS EXPECTED by Susan MacWilliam is a new body of sculpture and video work that considers the historic and groundbreaking experimental ESP (Extra Sensory Perception) and telepathy work of parapsychologist Dr JB Rhine (1895-1980). Working closely with historic archives and with a fascination in the researcher’s quest for answers and proof MacWilliam reflects on parapsychology – a subject falling beyond the ‘normal’ fields of science and psychology. AN ANSWER IS EXPECTED is a new commission for QUAD, in partnership with NN (formerly Fishmarket, Northampton). www.susanmacwilliam.com QUAD and NN are collaborating on a new Susan MacWilliam publication for this project. Susan MacWilliam’s 2011 residency at the Rhine Research Center, Durham, NC was supported by Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

While science is increasingly able to offer alternative explanations for previously mysterious phenomena; supernatural occurrences, the inexplicable, and the uncanny continue to be a ubiquitous part of everyday life. Recognizing that the supernatural has long been a stimulus for artistic and academic endeavour, BEYOND showcases a broad range of artistic and documentary practices that explore and investigate the unexplained. Selected through an international open call, each work presents a unique perspective on this often provocative subject. Delving into fortune telling, prophecies, ghostly presences, and ritual practices, BEYOND transforms QUAD’s Extra Gallery Spaces by offering an eclectic range of considered responses to the season theme.

Christmas Evil Friday 12th December at 8:45pm USA 1980 100 mins Dir: Lewis Jackson

Made in the golden age of the slasher movie, Lewis Jackson’s Christmas Evil, latched onto the obsession with holiday slashers and created arguably the best of the Christmas slashers. The tale is about a boy who loves Christmas and is irrevocably scarred when his finds out that Santa is not real (What?). As an adult he is disturbed by the behaviour of children and finally snaps and goes on a yuletide killing spree deciding who has been naughty and who has been nice! We are delighted to be joined by director Lewis Jackson for a live Skype Q&A for this screening (subject to work commitments).

Withnail & I Friday 17th – Monday 20th October UK 1987 107 mins Dir: Bruce Robinson

“We’ve gone on holiday by mistake”, “We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here and we want them now” and “Fork It!!!” are well known lines from one of the best British comedies ever made. Paul McGann and Richard E Grant set the screen alight and send audiences into hysterics with their depictions of out-of-work actors who decide to go to the country. A genuine classic.
