Welcome to the third edition of QUAD’s new quarterly brochure with films and events from April to June. This is always one of our most exciting periods of the year as our programme of major festivals kicks into gear with FORMAT 2015 in full effect and exciting film previews, premieres and special guests at the 2nd annual Derby Film Festival. We are also very proud to be a part of Derby Book Festival, in its first year it has already attracted stellar guests and I am sure it will now be a core part of Derby’s ever growing cultural calendar. We are very lucky to have such active and committed patrons and two of our most celebrated patrons received significant honours recently. John Hurt became Sir John Hurt in the New Year’s Honours list for his services to film and the wider cultural landscape and Jack O’Connell was awarded the BAFTA Rising Star award, rightly recognising him as one of the brightest young acting talents in the world today and, luckily for us, a very proud Derbien! There has never been a more important time for the arts in the political arena as we head into the next election, it is important that we as organisations make the case to politicians locally and nationally about the true value of the arts holistically in peoples’ lives. I would urge all of you who have enjoyed, been inspired or had life changing experiences through the arts (like me and many of my colleagues) to let your prospective candidates know how important the arts are to you. Adam Buss, QUAD CEO Flexible programming means we are not advertising screening dates for many of our films. Weekly screening times and details of new films going on sale are announced every Tuesday. We would like to recommend that the best way to find out which films are going on sale is to sign up for the free QUAD e-flyer, sent out every Tuesday with films times and a reminder of upcoming events. For those not online, please call QUAD Box Office for a recorded message of the weeks’ screening times, or pick up a printed copy from QUAD Box Office or your local library.

DON’T MISS Far From The Madding Crowd UK 1967 165 mins Dir: John Schlesinger
“ Julie Christie and Terence Stamp immortalised as lovers in Thomas Hardy’s epic love story. What resonates so deeply is the way in which Schlesinger and cinematographer Nicolas Roeg frame the passions and tragedy at the film’s heart against the patterns of rural life and the harsh, sodden beauty of the Dorset landscape. Almost 50 years on, this restoration reveals the film as an immersive piece of cinema with Hardy’s cruel ironies and bleak lyricism fully intact.” - Robin Baker, BFI
Thanks to the generosity of the public in raising over £25,000 so far, the Plus One scheme has been extended for another year.
Plus One aims to inspire young people and spark an ongoing interest in the arts and the cultural scene in Derby. For some young people, it will be the first time they will have visited the theatre or cinema with their foster family or carers.
Major arts and cultural organisations in Derby are working with Barnardos to provide looked-after children with the opportunity to see and experience live performance and film in the city. When booking tickets at either: Déda, Derby LIVE, Derby Theatre or QUAD you will be given the opportunity to contribute to the Plus One… a gift to inspire scheme. Barnardos will co-ordinate the distribution of tickets.

Beyond Evidence: An incomplete narratology of photographic truths Until 7th June 2015, QUAD Gallery
Featuring: Larry Sultan & Mike Mandel, Yann Mingard, Andrea Botto, Thomas Keenan & Eyal Weizman, Mishka Henner, Simon Menner, Regine Petersen, LA-X Collection Klaus Weidner, Tiane Doan na Champassak, Sara-Lena Maierhofer, Lukas Einsele, Miti Ruangkritya, Giorgio Di Noto, Tiphanie Mall, JoĂŁo Pina, Cristina De Middel, Natasha Caruana, Murray Ballard, Edmund Clark, Arianna Arcara & Luca Santese, StĂŠphanie Solinas and Werker Magazine with Mohamed Bousouf. For the 2015 edition of FORMAT Festival the main exhibition at QUAD Gallery takes its cue from the legendary work Evidence by Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel from 1977. The show curated by Lars Willumeit and Louise Clements presents a diversity of contemporary artistic positions that all use their own visual strategies to explore, question and undermine our preconceptions of evidence and its use within the medium of photography, art and visual culture. The exhibition features a wide range of fascinating international artists whose works interrogate the relationship between image and knowledge. Throughout the show artists remind us that not only does the camera test our ability to trust, but more fundamentally it provokes us to question how we determine the truth, beyond reasonable doubt, when photographic representation inherently instils within us through the history of documentary, a notion of trust. The scope of visual narratives in the investigations by the artists who look at the production of evidence, bring into view the tensions between probability and truth, between authenticity and doubt. In Beyond Evidence we invite audiences to explore this territory and indulge in a wonderful combination of works from the archive to contemporary installation all exploring the complexity and ideas of evidence.

His interest in photography probably began at this pivotal moment, although he later chose to study painting and drawing instead. He ‘became a photographer’ (somewhat accidentally) in 1983, and worked in the editorial and charity markets for nearly ten years, before he began teaching in 1992 (Power is currently the Professor of Photography at the University of Brighton). This move coincided with a shift towards long-term, self-initiated projects, which now sit comfortably alongside a number of large-scale commissions in the industrial sector. Power’s work has been seen in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the world and is in several public and private collections. He has published six books: ‘The Shipping Forecast’ (1996), ‘Superstructure’ (2000), ‘The Treasury Project’ (2002), ‘26 Different Endings’ (2007), ‘The Sound of Two Songs’ (2010) and ‘Mass’ (2013). Mark Power joined Magnum Photos in 2002. www.markpower.co.uk Cost: £5, £4 concessions

International guest speakers explore the FORMAT Festival theme of ‘Evidence’ in film, photography, politics, photojournalism and more. Evidence is the mainstay of how we decide what is and is not true and since its invention in the 19th century, photography has been crucial to the collection, recording and display of evidence. Today, millions of seemingly insignificant moments are captured on cameras, mobile phones and tablets, generating a trail of our everyday lives and proof of our existence. Organised in partnership with the University of Derby and featuring Natasha Caruana, Stéphanie Solinas, Sarah Pickering, Kim Knoppers, Christine Eyene, Jonathan Wright and more. Cost: £60, £45 concessions

Founded in 1958, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop was home to a maverick group of experiment composers, sound engineers and musical innovators. Drawing on the principles of musique concrete, found sounds, early electronics, oscillators, handmade synths and tape loops the Workshop created the other-worldly soundtrack to some of BBC televisions most iconic programmes: including Doctor Who, Horizon, Quatermass, The Body in Question and The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy among many others.
Director Peter Sasdy will be appearing as part of the second weekend’s Fantastiq Film Festival (8th – 10th May) to talk about his career directing Hammer films like Taste The Blood Of Dracula, Hands Of The Ripper and Countess Dracula as well as the terrifying BBC Christmas special The Stone Tape. FILMS
8½
S
Italy 1963 138 mins Dir: Federico Fellini
A film director who looks like Fellini tries to make a film but can’t, except that here is the result, Fellini’s roughly ‘eighth-and-a-half’ film. Convoluted and self-reflexive, 8½ comes on as the ultimate art-movie, but is above all an extraordinary evocation of unbearable restlessness finally giving way to the joy of going with the flow. 8½ was voted number three in the 2002 Sight & Sound Directors’ Poll of the Top Ten Best Films of all time. - BFI
Blade Runner: The Final Cut USA 1982 120 mins Dir: Ridley Scott
Rick Deckard is a Blade Runner, a bounty hunter who’s charged with hunting down four replicants (human clones) who have escaped from the colony off world and returned to Earth to find their maker. The film was re-edited on release in 1982, re-released in an acclaimed Director’s Cut in 1992 then finally finished with this 2007 Final Cut overseen entirely by Ridley Scott. Presented here in a brand new digital print, it is a masterpiece in world building and one of the most influential science-fiction movies of all time.
Altman USA 2014 96 mins Dir: Ron Mann
A Little Chaos UK 2014 116 mins Dir: Alan Rickman
Kate Winslet stars as a revolutionary garden designer, Sabine de Barra, hired by renowned landscape architect André Le Nôtre (Matthias Schoenaerts) to help him construct King Louis XIV’s garden at Versailles. Brought in to create unparalleled splendour, the gardens aren’t the only challenge that de Barra faces. She must battle court politics too, in the form of the straitlaced Le Nôtre and his wife (Helen McCrory) who suspects a romantic rival – as well as dealing with the whims of an impatient king (played by Rickman himself). With a sensationally witty script from screenwriter Alison Deehan, a dry, wry Rickman, and hilarious turn from Stanley Tucci as a court dandy, there is a great deal of humour on display. But the film is more than just a period romp, it has an interesting emphasis on women and their internal life that’s given force and resonance by a superb performance from Winslet.
This documentary looks at the work and the impact of American film-maker Robert Altman. Covering a career that spanned decades mixing in home footage, archive clips of Altman and interviews with the many people that worked with him over the years; including Bruce Willis, Robin Williams, Paul Thomas Anderson, James Caan, Elliot Gould and more.
Blind Norway/Netherlands 2014 91 mins Dir: Eskil Vogt
Norwegian Eskil Vogt maybe better known for penning the excellent Joachim Trier’s Oslo, August 31st, but Blind, his first foray into writing/ directing has firmly launched him in the director’s chair and with multiple festivals wins under his belt, Vogt should be sitting comfortably. Ellen Dorrit Peterson plays Ingrid, a married Norwegian woman who has lost her sight and prefers to stay at home with her memories and thoughts. Yet her real problems lie not within the four walls of her home but inside her and we watch as her deepest anxieties and repressed sexual fantasies take over. Vogt deftly manages to suggest what the world of a blind person must be like – with all its daily challenges – and also how it affects the inner life of a 30-something woman who was planning to have children.
The Clouds Of Sils Maria France/USA 2014 124 mins Dir: Olivier Assayas
A bewitchingly complex melancholic drama from Olivier Assayas (Something in the Air) about Maria, a diva actress devilishly played by Juliette Binoche - whose career is on the wane - her smart devoted personal assistant Valentina (Kristen Stewart) and Jo-Ann (Chloe Grace Moretz) a nubile young actress sizzling with confidence and sexuality, eager to take Maria’s crown. Assayas has delivered a razor-smart script in a film that honestly explores the peaks and troughs of celebrity living. A captivating study in not one but three psyches; it’s All About Eve shaken and stirred with some Bergman-esque psycho-sexual female misbehaving.
The Conversation Fri 3rd – Thu 9th April (excluding Monday 6th – Wednesday 7th April) USA 1974 113 mins Dir: Francis Ford Coppola
Sandwiched between his two classic Godfather films, The Conversation is a masterpiece in paranoia cinema. Harry Caul is a devout Catholic and an electronic surveillance expert who has a crisis of conscience when he believes that a couple he is spying on are going to be murdered. Winner of the Palme D’Or and released in the midst of the Watergate scandal that rocked America, this features a stellar performance from Gene Hackman.
Cry Of The City USA 1948 93 mins Dir: Robert Siodmark
Child 44
Cobain: Montage of Heck
Czech Republic/UK/Romania/USA 137 mins Dir: Daniel Espinosa
USA 2015 132 mins Dir: Brett Morgen
Tom Hardy plays idealistic security officer Leo Demidov who sets about investigating a series of child murders in a Stalin-era Soviet Union. Because such things as child or serial killers do not exist in Stalin’s USSR, he is demoted and exiled but, with the help of his wife (Noomi Rapace), he continues to search for the murderer. Based on the best selling book by Tom Rob Smith, Child 44 has an all star cast including Vincent Cassel, Gary Oldman, Charles Dance and Burton’s Paddy Considine.
This authorised documentary on the late singer and songwriter Kurt Cobain follows his life from his early days in Aberdeen, Washington to his worldwide success with the grunge band Nirvana. Created largely from personal archive materials, this absorbing documentary is a fascinating film with extensive access to surviving family members.
A vivid depiction of life in New York’s Little Italy, Siodmak’s fast-paced crime thriller anticipates the films of Martin Scorsese. An electrifying variation on the theme of a hoodlum (Conte) and a cop (Mature) who knew one another as kids, it opens with the former seriously wounded in hospital but determined to escape the police watching over him; he needs to clear the name of his fiancée, who’s suspected of a jewel robbery. While Conte, all insolent, menacing charm, is especially magnificent, and Mature invests the detective’s pursuit with unsettling hints of obsession, the movie fields a glorious gallery of shady figures, from a lawyer oozing corruption to a memorably sadistic masseuse. The steely realism is enhanced by flourishes of noir stylisation – Geoff Andrew.
The Dark Horse New Zealand 2014 124 mins Dir: James Napier Robertson
This true story is based on the life of charismatic New Zealand speed chess champion Genesis Potini, who brought a combustible energy to the game. He also suffered from bi-polar disorder. Determined to add some stability to his life he volunteers to help an afterschool chess club, filled with angry kids. An inspiring and award winning film.
Dior And I France 2014 90 mins Dir: Frederic Tcheng
Filmmaker Frederic Tcheng follows up his work on excellent fashion films, including Diana Vreeland: The Eye has To Travel, with another exploration of a towering fashion institution. Enter the multifaceted world of the House of Christian Dior with this privileged behind the scenes look at the creation of Raf Simons’ highly anticipated first Haute Couture collection as the brand’s new Artistic Director. From conception to exhibition, the film follows the everyday, pressure filled components of fashion with an elegant reverence for the history of Dior.
The Face Of An Angel UK/Italy/Spain 2014 100 mins Dir: Michael Winterbottom
The latest from Michael Winterbottom is this film based on the book Angel Face drawn from crime coverage about the real life story of Amanda Knox who was accused of the murder of Meredith Kercher. Kate Beckinsale stars alongside Daniel Bruhl (Rush) and rising star Cara Delevingne.
The Falling UK 2014 102 mins Dir: Carol Morley
Carol Morley’s eagerly awaited follow up to her devastating Dreams of a Life is another beguiling insight into human behaviour; this time the agitated fever of teenage girlhood. It’s set in 1969; where best friends Lydia (Maisie Williams of Game of Thrones fame) and Abbie (breathtaking newcomer Florence Pugh) have cultivated a world for two in the midst of the pent-up repressions of a buttoned up English girls school. Lydia’s fixation on her friend is a welcome distraction from her frustratingly impenetrable mother (Maxine Peake) who suffers from agoraphobia and whose cool detachment leaves Lydia feeling rootless. Her fragile world, with Abbie at its centre, starts to unravel when Abbie and her white magic-obsessed brother sleep together; as a tragedy and ensuing mysterious fainting epidemic overtake the school.
Force Majeure Sweden 2014 119 mins Dir: Ruben Ostlund
Winner of the Jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014, Force Majeure follows a week in the life of a Swedish family who are skiing in the French Alps when disaster strikes. On their second day there, a controlled avalanche goes wrong and the situation reveals hidden truths about the marriage, the relationship between the couple and their children. Nominated for Best Foreign Language film at this year’s Oscars.
Good Kill USA 2014 102 mins Dir: Andrew Niccol
Writer/Director Andrew Niccol has forged a career with interesting science fiction films with the likes of Gattaca, In Time and the excellent The Truman Show. Here he turns his eye to this tale of a Las Vegas based fighter pilot turned drone pilot who fights the Taliban via remote control 12 hours a day. But he is starting to question the mission. Is he creating more terrorists than he’s killing? With Ethan Hawke and January Jones.
The Long Good Friday UK 1980 114 mins Dir: John Mackenzie
Far From The Madding Crowd USA/UK 2015 119 mins Dir: Thomas Vinterberg
This new adaptation of the novel by Thomas Hardy sees Carey Mulligan taking on the role of Bathsheba Everdene as she attracts the attention of three very different suitors played by Tom Sturridge (Effie Gray), Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust And Bone) and Michael Sheen (The Damned United). Director Thomas Vinterberg (Festen, The Hunt) has brought together a strong cast for this ambitious adaptation.
The Good Lie
The Invisible Life
USA 2014 110 mins Dir: Phillippe Falardeau
Portugal 2013 103 mins Dir: Vitor Goncalves
This drama follows a group of Sudanese children who are orphaned after their village is massacred in the Second Sudanese Civil War, they flee and trek to Ethiopia where they are selected to be resettled in America. They are sent to Kansas City and Boston where they struggle to adapt to the alien culture. They are helped by employment counsellor Carrie Davis (Reese Witherspoon) who tries to help them settle and reconcile their emotional scars from their past. From the director of Monsieur Lazhar.
Hugo is a man on the cusp of middle age, squandering his life away. Facing the impending death of his friend and professional mentor Antonio, he realises something must change. Hugo prefers to work alone at night in the cavernous offices of the civil service. His colleagues make him anxious and he has the social skills of a hermit. Hugo can see that he needs to change and take control of his own destiny but finding the strength to do so is quite another matter. Existing somewhere between the existential horror of Bergman and absurdist literary dread of Kafka, The Invisible Life explores how Hugo’s past smothers his ability to imagine and create a future for himself.
This classic British crime thriller starring Bob Hoskins, Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan is back on British cinema screens in an exclusively restored version from original film elements just in time for its 35th anniversary. When a series of bombs start exploding around London it quickly becomes apparent that someone is muscling in on Harold Shand’s turf, just as he is about to close a very big deal. With an explosive performance from Hoskins as Shand, Long Good Friday deserves its classic status.
Lost River USA 2014 95 mins Dir: Ryan Gosling
Ryan Gosling steps behind the camera and shows a unique vision channelling Terence Malik and David Lynch. To be fair this isn’t for everyone, but take a chance as Lost River does reward you; Gosling has pulled together an amazing cast with Christina Hendricks, Eva Mendes, the wonderful Ben Mendelsohn (Starred Up) alongside Brit actors Ian De Caestecker (Agents Of SHIELD) and former Doctor Who Matt Smith.

Miss Julie Norway/UK/USA/Canada 2015 129 mins Dir: Liv Ullmann
Legendary Swedish actress and director Liv Ullmann adapts August Stindberg’s play with an immediacy and style. Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) stars as the eponymous Miss Julie alongside Colin Farrell and Samantha Morton. Over the course of a midsummer night in Fermanagh in 1890, the unsettled daughter of Anglo-Irish aristocracy encourages her father’s valet to seduce her.
The New Girlfriend
S
Queen And Country
France 2014 105 mins Dir: Francois Ozon
UK 2015 105 mins Dir: John Boorman
François Ozon’s latest film is a skilfully triangulated psychological thriller about a woman who learns that the husband of her deceased BFF is harbouring an unusual secret. This delectable piece of cinema is as surprising for its continually evolving (and involving) dynamics of desire as for its slow-building emotional power, making for a more connecting, open-ended experience than the creepy Ruth Rendell detective tale from which it has been loosely adapted. Anaïs Demoustier and Romain Duris both shine and Ozon once again digs deep into the human psyche with wit, humour and a nod to the uncanny.
28 years after the multi BAFTA award winning Hope And Glory, director John Boorman returns to the characters in the early 1950s. Bill Rohan, the lead character in H&G, is now 19 and beginning basic training, during the Korean War. Bill is joined by trouble-making army mate Percy and never gets near Korea but together they wage a battle of wits with their superior Sgt Major Bradley (David Thewis) and Major Cross (Richard E Grant).
Mommy Canada 2014 139 mins Dir: Xavier Dolan
Diane is a single parent whose son Steve is an unruly troublemaker suffering from ADHD and attachment disorder. When Steve is expelled from his latest juvenile facility, Diane has to take him back into her home full time, forcing the sparring pair to re-establish a relationship. As neighbour Kyla gets drawn into their crazy orbit, an unlikely family formation emerges which has a profound effect on them all. Shot in a striking 1:1 aspect ratio, which seems to frame each character within their own personal Instagramsized prison, Mommy is a masterclass in film-making flair.
A Royal Night Out UK 2015 Dir: Julian Jarrold
A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence S Sweden 2014 101 mins Dir: Roy Andersson
A new film from Roy Andersson (Songs From The Second Floor, You, The Living) is always something to get excited about. His new film, his first in seven years, follows a pair of joke article salesmen who only have three products: vampire teeth, a canned laughter sack and a frightening rubber mask. Needless to say they aren’t the best salesmen in the world! A delirious blend of comedy and tragedy! “
5 stars” The Guardian
Julian Jarrold’s latest is an affectionate ‘what-if’ story about the adventures of two real life princesses. The film is set on V. E. Day in 1945, amid scenes of international celebration as World War II comes to a close. London is overflowing with joy and excess, and two teenagers; Princesses Margaret and Elizabeth (the future Queen of England) are allowed out at night for the first time to join the party. Leaving Buckingham Palace for the night they embark on an adventure, finding themselves exposed to unusual intrigue, romance and danger, before getting home far too late. A delightfully entertaining recreation of a particularly heady national moment, and an imagining of a night of unusual freedom for the two ordinarily sheltered young royals starring Sarah Gadon, Bel Powley, Rupert Everett and Emily Watson.
The Salvation Denmark/UK 2014 92 mins Dir: Kristian Levring
Levring has successfully created an unlikely, thrilling new genre (a Danish Western), harnessing together the lean, dirty-faced shoot-outs, chases and lawlessness of Clint Eastwood’s Westerns. Mads Mikkelsen plays Jon, a Danish ex-soldier turned frontiersman who meets his wife and son from the old country after years of separation spent establishing himself in a ranch near Black Creek. As they travel to the ranch, they’re joined on the stagecoach by a drunken outlaw and his sidekick, and all hell breaks loose, setting off acts of revenge upon revenge which bring Jon into direct confrontation with a sadistic local gang leader named Delarue (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).
Princess Kaguya Japan 2013 137 mins Dir: Isao Takahata
Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata explores one of Japan’s most famous folktales, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, in this enchanting animation. When an old bamboo cutter happens upon a tiny girl the size of his thumb. Taking her home to his wife, the couple raise the girl as their own. Her great beauty, enthrals all who encounter her, leading the Emperor himself to try and win her heart. But the princess has no interest, as day by day her desire to return to the world from which she came grows stronger.
Something Must Break S (Nanting Maste Ga Sonder)
Timbuktu
Sweden 2014 85 mins Dir: Ester Martin Bergsmark
Set in the early days of the jihadist takeover of Northern Mali in 2012, the once bustling city of Timbuktu is now near-silent, kept in order by soldiers who patrol the winding streets, employing their strict rules and swift justice to anyone who contravenes their law.
This gritty love story follows the androgynous Sebastian and Andreas, who is definitely not gay. They form a unity. They dream about escaping boredom and the risk of becoming what everyone else is. And then there is Ellie - the superwoman growing inside of Sebastian who Andreas loves and fears. It’s a battle for love where Sebastian finally has to realise that he has to let Ellie loose, find the strength within himself and not let his happiness depend on someone else. Winner of the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival.
The Tribe (Plemya) Ukraine/Netherlands 2014 130 mins Dir: Miroslav Slaboshpitsky
A hot tip at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Myroslav Slaboshpitsky’s audacious, confident debut is a ‘an innovative rethinking of cinema’s language of sight and sound’ (Jonathan Romney). Featuring a cast of young deaf actors, it’s set in a boarding school for the Deaf, where new arrival Sergey (Grigoriy Fesenko) is quickly drawn into a world of institutionalised theft and prostitution. But assigned to Anna (Yana Novikova) as her pimp, he falls in love with her; a grievous mistake in a world with exceptionally unforgiving rules. With explicit scenes of both sex and violence.
France/Mauritania 2014 97 mins Dir: Abderrahmane Sissako
The film’s narrative weaves between small but significant stories: but at the centre of the story is Kidane, a local shepherd, who lives freely outside of the city in the desert with his wife and two children.
Bread And Roses presents The Unknown Known Sunday 24th May USA 2014 102 mins Dir: Errol Morris
Academy Award-winning director Errol Morris offers a mesmerizing portrait of Donald Rumsfeld, the larger-than-life figure who served as George W. Bush’s secretary of defence and as the principal architect of the Iraq War. Rather than conducting a conventional interview, Morris has Rumsfeld perform and explain his “snowflakes” - the enormous archive of memos he wrote across almost fifty years in Congress, the White House, in business, and twice at the Pentagon. The memos provide a window into history - not as it actually happened, but as Rumsfeld wants us to see it.

Woman In Gold UK/USA 2015 Dir: Simon Curtis
Helen Mirren stars as determined Jewish exile Maria Altmann as she seeks restitution of a Gustav Klimt painting seized by the Nazis. This compelling true story is brought to the screen by My Week With Marilyn director Simon Curtis, as the eccentric Maria embarks on a quest to reclaim the painting from the Austrian government. With Ryan Reynolds, Charles Dance, Katie Holmes and Daniel Bruhl.
While We’re Young USA 2014 97 mins Dir: Noah Baumbach
Acclaimed indie auteur Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Frances Ha!) has created another witty and exploratory comedy-drama, here reuniting with his Greenberg star Ben Stiller, who plays documentary film-maker Josh, married to Naomi Watts’ Cornelia. They’re a somewhat neurotic couple considering their future – while most of their friends have had children, they’re still unsure, becoming ever more aware that their lives are fleeting and their remaining choices, limiting. They meet carefree Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried), a pair of bohemian, louche 20-somethings whose hipster cool they find endlessly appealing. A film about generational envy, career dissatisfaction, the pain of missed opportunities, full of very Woody Allen-ish angst and wit; Baumbach’s insightful, sparklingly funny film is a pleasure to watch.

White Bird In A Blizzard
The Return Of The Living Dead
USA 2014 91 mins Dir: Gregg Araki
Friday 24th & Saturday 25th April USA 1985 91 mins Dir: Dan O’Bannon
Director Gregg Araki has had great success in crafting stories around disillusioned teens and he continues with this more mature film set in 1988 and following 17 year old Kat as she comes to grips with her mother’s disappearance. When the truth presents itself, Kat finds herself confronted with her own denial over the events surrounding it.
One of the classic cannon of great zombie movies and a whole lot of fun to boot. When two inept employees at a medical warehouse accidentally unleash a deadly gas, it causes the dead to rise and demand “Braaainns! Braaains!”. From Dan O’Bannon, writer of Alien and John A Russo, writer of the seminal Night Of The Living Dead!
Spring USA 2014 109 mins Dir: Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead
Reeling from the tragic loss of his mother, Evan flees his suburban hometown for Italy, intent on getting away from everything and clearing his mind. One afternoon, he spots a local woman named Louise and, captivated by her beauty, approaches her. The pair soon start dating, but just as Evan’s sadness begins to drift away, it becomes clear that Louise has a dark and surprising secret that will test his feelings in ways he never imagined. As with their acclaimed Resolution, directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have crafted an intriguing and unexpected riff on the horror film, which initially promises one thing before delivering something entirely different. As indebted to Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise as it is the stories of HP Lovecraft, Spring is a work of sweeping romance and wild imagination and once again proves that this duo are two of the most exciting names in modern genre cinema – London Film Festival.

Friday 17th April Hong Kong 2013 105 mins Dir: Juno Mak
After spooking festival-goers around the world, Rigor Mortis hits UK screens. An out of work actor moves into an apartment block and finds himself engulfed in supernatural events in this chiller from producer Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge). Taking inspiration from and paying tribute to classic Hong Kong films such as Mr. Vampire and Encounters Of The Spooky Kind, Rigor Mortis is a witty and engaging spookfest, re-animating the previously flat-lining Hong Kong horror genre. “ An elegantly realised revitalisation of a lost mode of Hong Kong Horror” Sight and Sound

Vengeance Is Mine
Otto Preminger’s epic tale of a former prosecutor Paul Biegler (James Stewart) who is enlisted to defend Lieutenant Frederick Manion (Ben Gazzara) who is accused of murdering his wife’s rapist. Knowing how the prosecution works Biegler sets out to find the witness that could save the case. Excellent performances all round from the stellar cast and the cynical view of the justice system was ahead of its time. This film will be introduced by Simon Kinnear, critic for Total Film and will screen as part of the Derby Film Festival.

Thursday 7th May Japan 2014 116 mins Dir: Shion Sono
Friday 19th June Japan 1979 139 mins Dir: Shohei Imamura
In an alternate and heightened version of Tokyo each district is ruled by a different gang of teenage thugs. A tentative peace has held between the districts for five years but when one gang intrudes on another’s territory all out warfare threatens to rip the city apart. Sion Sono has made a habit of shocking the world with his outrageously imaginative films and he out-does himself here with Japan’s first ever gangster rap musical, full of eye-popping neon colours, hip-hop beats, and some of the most amusingly over-the-top violence ever put on film.
Double Palme d’Or winning director Shohei Imamura (The Ballad Of Narayama, The Eel) grippingly dramatises the rise to notoriety of thief, swindler and remorseless murderer Iwao Enokizu during a 78-day crime spree where he wreaked havoc across Japan whilst evading a nationwide police manhunt. Based on a true story and featuring a chillingly memorable star turn from Ken Ogata in the lead role, Vengeance Is Mine offers an unforgettable and unsettling glimpse at the darker side of human nature.

With exclusive new research revealing incredible recent discoveries, the Van Gogh Museum has helped craft a cinema experience like no other. Not to be missed.
Cezanne, Monet, Degas and their compatriots are the world’s most popular artists. But just who were they really? Why and how did they paint? What lies behind their enduring appeal? To help answer these questions, the film has secured unique access to a major new exhibition focussing on the 19th century Parisian art collector Paul Durand-Ruel, the outspoken champion of Impressionism. This eagerly anticipated exhibition is perhaps the most comprehensive ever held about the Impressionists. Durand-Ruel’s brave decision to exhibit the Impressionists in New York in 1886 introduced enlightened, wealthy Americans to modern French painting. In doing so, he not only filled great American galleries with Impressionist masterworks but also kept impressionism alive at a time when it faced complete failure. This energetic and revealing film will tell his remarkable story along with that of the Impressionists themselves.
