Welcome to QUAD’s quarterly brochure with films and events from October until December.
Sicario
Further afield we are very proud to be part of one of the most successful pavilions at this years’ Venice Biennale, the largest contemporary arts festival in the world. As a core partner in EM15 alongside New Art Exchange (Nottingham), Beacon Art Project (Lincolnshire) and One Thoresby Street (Nottingham) we presented Doug Fishbone’s Leisureland Golf which attracted thousands of visitors young and old, and crucially as many from the local community as well as the visiting contemporary arts fans. This was accompanied by the ongoing online project Sunscreen, you can find out more about both here: em15venice.co.uk As the nights get shorter we are looking ahead to Autumn highlights at QUAD, including some blockbuster films Spectre and Suffragette, the Family Arts festival in October and the fan-tastic (sorry) season of Fans & Legends with some really inspiring and unusual exhibition events. Christmas is on the horizon too, and we are already taking corporate bookings for Christmas parties! And while it may be a little too early to wish all our customers seasonal greetings while writing this in September, we do hope QUAD has inspired and entertained you throughout 2015.
Denis Villeneuve’s (Incendies, Enemy) brutish, confident Sicario stars Emily Blunt as an FBI agent working around the US/Mexico border. Making an unpleasant discovery, she is called on by her superior Matt (Josh Brolin) and his enigmatic associate Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro) to investigate the powerful cartels channelling drugs into the States. With great performances from Blunt, Brolin and a powerhouse turn by Del Toro, beautiful cinematography by Roger Deakins and a malevolent soundtrack, this is must see cinema.
Summer Nights
With over 12,000 attendees, this year’s outdoor film screenings have made QUAD’s Summer Nights Festival our most successful yet.

Aside from the work you see every day at QUAD there is always lots going on behind the scenes. TechSQUAD (our in house technical gurus!) have been working closely with Leicester Museums to help them digitise their collections through advanced 3D scanning techniques to enable greater online engagement with their artifacts as well as giving their staff greater knowledge and opportunities to engage customers in person.
“A brutal action thriller with screeching feedback notes of fear and paranoia” Peter Bradshaw
For those of you who are not online, either call QUAD Box office to hear a recorded message of each week’s screening times, or pick up a printed copy from QUAD Box office or from your local library; all updated every Tuesday. Adam Buss, QUAD CEO

Carol
Ireland/UK/Canada 2015 105 mins Dir: John Crowley
UK/USA 2015 118 mins Dir: Todd Haynes
Based on the well-loved novel by Colm Tóibin, and expertly adapted for the screen by Nick Hornby, the film follows Ellis Lacey (a captivating Saoirse Ronan) as she leaves 1950’s Ireland for brighter work prospects in New York. Initially reticent to the possibilities of her new home’s charms; new friendships and an unexpected romance buoy her as she settles into her new surroundings. But when home ties pull her painfully back to Ireland, she is forced to choose between two men, two countries and two futures. John Crawley’s warm and affecting drama set off a bidding war after playing to rapt audiences at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Todd Haynes first feature film since 2007’s I’m Not There (although he did mastermind the excellent Mildred Pierce TV mini-series) is a gripping adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price Of Salt. Set in the 1950s it follows the story of Therese (Rooney Mara), a young woman in her twenties who falls for Carol (Cate Blanchett) an older, married woman.
Carol received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival and was the Winner of Best Actress award for Rooney Mara’s performance as Therese.

USA 2015 108 mins Dir: Ann Boden & Ryan Fleck
UK 2015 104 mins Dir: Stephen Frears

Gerry (Ben Mendelsohn) is a talented poker player but his habit is getting the best of him. When he meets charismatic traveller Curtis (Ryan Reynolds), Gerry deems him his lucky charm and they head south towards a high stakes poker game. An intoxicating story of compulsive gamblers, evoking the seedy, small time world of gambling with all the hope and paranoia that comes with it. Finally Mendelsohn gets to show what he can do in a leading role and he doesn’t disappoint.
An Irish sports journalist (Lee Pace) becomes convinced that Lance Armstrong’s performances during the Tour de France victories are fuelled by banned substances. With this conviction, he starts hunting for evidence that will expose one of sport’s biggest drugs scandals. Stephen Frears gets behind the camera for the first time since the smash hit Philomena while Ben Foster suits up as Lance Armstrong.
Winner of the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, The Lobster is the English-language debut of director Yorgos Lanthimos, director of the sublimely weird Dogtooth. The Lobster is set in a dystopian near future where single people, according to bizarre new rules, are sent to a hotel where they are obliged to find a romantic partner amongst the guests within 45 days, or face being transformed into an animal of their choice and released into the woods. A surreal, hilarious and brilliantly entertaining satire that recalls British comedies like Black Mirror and Brass Eye. Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz head an eclectic cast including Léa Seydoux, John C Reilly, Olivia Colman, Ben Whishaw, Ashley Jensen and Michael Smiley.

With a fictional identity torn from the pages of the best-selling novel Orion, the backing of the legendary Sun Records and a voice that seemed to be the twin of Presley’s himself, the scheme concocted in the months after The King’s death exploded into a cult success – and the ‘Elvis is alive’ myth began.
Alejandro Amenabar (The Others, The Sea Inside) returns to filmmaking for the first time since 2009’s Agora with this psychological thriller. Star Wars: The Force Awakens USA 2015 Dir: J. J. Abrams
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away…those words will be writ large across cinema screens this December for the first time in ten years (32 years if you don’t count the prequels!). Little is known about the story but old favourites Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) return alongside new characters played by Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, Lupita Nyon’o and John Boyega. The most anticipated movie of 2015 has some way to go to top this year’s best blockbusters (Mad Max: Fury Road, Jurassic World).
In 2010, Jafar Panahi was arrested for making a film against the Iranian regime and banned from making any films. Following This Is Not A Film and Closed Curtain, Taxi is his third film since the ban! Shot entirely within the confines of a taxi, we see Tehran through the eyes of a taxi driver (Panahi) and the people who get in his cab. Winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

F ANS & LEGENDS SCREENING DAY Chinese myths, legends and literature have all had a huge influence on both the big and small screens and to accompany the RoCH Fans & Legends season at QUAD we present a series of screenings of works that all reflect this influence. In Ashes Of Time, acclaimed director Wong Kar-Wai (2046, The Grandmaster) invents a prequel storyline for characters taken from novelist Louis Cha’s Condor Heroes Trilogy and creates a modern day wuxia (martial arts hero) classic, full of majestic swordplay and gorgeous cinematography. Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, adapted from a novel by the Chinese writer
Wang Dulu, was one of the first wuxia films to receive Hollywood funding and went on to win four Oscars and become be a worldwide hit. Wilson Yip’s Ip Man kick-started a craze in Hong Kong cinema for films based around the real life martial arts teacher responsible for the tutelage of the young Bruce Lee, and indicates that myths and legends are still being created in modern day Chinese culture. And finally, the late 1970s Japanese television show Monkey, an enduring cult hit in the UK based on the 16th century Chinese novel Journey To The West by Wu Cheng’En, demonstrates the huge international reach and appeal of tales taken from Chinese culture and mythology.

Feng (Leslie Cheung) is a talented swordsman who has allowed himself to become bitter and cynical. Living the life of a desert vagabond, he employs other swordsman to carry out the contract killings he no longer wants to handle himself. Featuring a cast of Hong Kong stars including Tony Leung, Bridget Lin and Maggie Cheung, Ashes Of Time was a mammoth wuxia (martial arts hero) production which suffered huge schedule and budget overruns. Released in a version director Wong considered unfinished in 1994, it was finally completed to his satisfaction in 2008 and stands as a hugely entertaining and beautifully shot entry into the genre.
Master Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) asks his friend Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) to ensure a valuable and ancient sword reaches its new owner safely. But the sword is soon stolen by a mysterious and talented martial artist and the pair must use both their wits and fighting skills to retrieve it. Wuxia cinema hit the big time with this worldwide hit from director Lee (The Life Of Pi), which won Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Score. A chance to re-acquaint yourself with a classic of world cinema before a belated sequel arrives in cinemas next year.

Ip Man Saturday 7th November, 9:00pm 2008 Hong Kong 108 mins Dir: Wilson Yip
Ip Man was a hugely influential martial arts grandmaster who specialised in the discipline Wing Chun and counted Bruce Lee amongst his students. This film focuses on his early life during the 1930s in the city of Foshan. Despite his great talent Ip Man (Donnie Yen) tries to keep a low profile and focus on his training, but when the second Sino-Japanese war breaks out and throws the city into chaos Ip Man finds himself compelled to act. Ip Man was a huge hit on release in Hong Kong and is a trendsetting movie. Many other films featuring the character have followed in its wake but Ip Man remains the original and best. “Sammo Hung’s superbly choreographed kick-ass fight scenes dazzle” Timeout

At a small café on a railway station, housewife Laura Jesson meets doctor Alec Harvey. Although they are both already married, they gradually fall in love with each other. They continue to meet every Thursday at the café, although they know that their love is impossible. “It’s the loveliest period piece imaginable” The Independent This screening will be introduced by a guest speaker.
After finding a severed ear in a field, a young teenager (Kyle MacLachlan) discovers a sinister underworld hiding in his seemingly idyllic home town. David Lynch delves into the polished veneer and the white picket fences of suburbia to find the black heart that beats beneath. With a truly terrifying performance by Dennis Hopper as Frank. This screening on Wednesday 25th November at 8:45pm will be introduced by Darrell Buxton
Breakfast At Tiffany’s Friday 4th – Monday 6th December USA 1961 115 mins Dir: Blake Edwards
Audrey Hepburn, the ‘It girl’ of the 1960’s, is the delectable Holly Golightly. When struggling writer Paul Varjak moves into a New York apartment building, he becomes intrigued by his stylish but quirky neighbour. With the mean reds, a stupid no name cat and the wonderful Moon River, this is a classic movie that proves that fashion may be fleeting but style is eternal. This screening will be introduced by a guest speaker.
The Big Knights
Pan
UK 2015 70 mins Dir: Neville Astley & Mark Barker
USA 2015 Dir: Joe Wright
In the far off land of Borovia, where dragons are fierce, witches are wicked, scientists are insane, the economy is bad and the television is in black & white, stands Castle Big: home of the Big Knights. The Big Knights revolves around the Knightly Brothers Sir Boris (the finest swordsman in the world), Sir Morris (the most enthusiastic) and their noble pets, Sir Horace the dog and Sir Doris the hamster. From the award winning animators behind Peppa Pig and Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom, this is packed with all the wit and charm audience have come to expect.

QUAD CHRISTMAS SEASON Ho-Ho-Ho! It’s Christmas! The Shop Around The Corner Friday 11th – Monday 14th December USA 1940 99 mins Dir: Ernst Lubitsch
Set in a lovingly evoked Budapest in the run-up to Christmas, Lubitsch’s deliciously delicate comedy focuses on the various obstacles blocking the path of potential lovers James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, fellow workers in a gossip-ridden emporium who are unaware they’re in fact courting one another by mail in an anonymous correspondence. The director’s fabled ‘touch’, here at its lightest, contributes to what is arguably Hollywood’s most exquisitely romantic depiction of the old central Europe. Perfect seasonal fare.
Caesar and the Romans once again attempt to storm the Gaulish village with a new plan to absorb the villagers into Roman culture by having an estate built next to the village to start a new Roman colony. Based on the comic book Asterix et Le Domaine des Dieux, the film has all the favourites back for more animated adventures.
Peter Pan flies again on the big screen! A boy is spirited away from his home to Neverland and embarks on a series of adventures fraught with dangers, and discovers his destiny. With Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfriend, Rooney Mara, Cara Delevingne, Kathy Burke and Paul Kaye.

EXHIBITIONS FANS & LEGENDS SEASON A season at QUAD inspired by newly commissioned work by the artist susan pui san lok, based on The Condor Trilogy of Chinese martial arts influenced books, fantasy films and TV shows. The season features exhibitions, talks, film screenings and a host of educational activities and events that not only examine the place of the martial arts in the public consciousness, but also other legends and pop cultural phenomena in wider society. Fans & Legends as a season also examines the role of the fans who in many instances dedicate much of their free time to follow something they feel passionate about. #FansandLegends
Until 15th November 2015 QUAD Gallery
RoCH Fans & Legends features new commissioned video works and digital animations by susan pui san lok that draw on fan uploads of over forty different media adaptations of The Condor Trilogy, a classic ‘new wuxia’ epic first published in the 1950s. ‘RoCH’ stands for Return of the Condor Heroes, the second book in the trilogy; wuxia is a genre of Chinese fiction, television and cinema often featuring the adventures of male and female ‘knight errants’, martial artists, and swordplay. RoCH Fans & Legends explores some of the genre’s fantasies, landscapes, and archetypes, the trilogy’s

RoCH Fans & Legends is commissioned by QUAD and the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CFCCA), in partnership with Animate Projects and the University of Salford. RoCH launches at QUAD with a limited edition artist book. The project will then tour to CFCCA as part of their 30th anniversary programme, accompanied by a richly illustrated e-publication. RoCH Fans & Legends is supported using public funding by Arts Council England, with additional funding from Middlesex University and University of Salford.
Taking inspiration from susan pui san lok’s newly commissioned body of work RoCH: Fans & Legends, this exhibition explores ideas of adaptation and appropriation. Since its emergence in the late 1950s, the Condor Heroes series has been adapted over 40 times in various forms, from novels, television, films and video games. These adaptations could be considered as fan fiction, in the way they are inspired by the original series but introduce new, sometimes radical, additions to The Condor Trilogy ‘universe’. Yet this figure does not include the vast number of fan fiction works published on forums and websites by fans of the series from across the globe. Crouching Fan, Hidden Legend examines how far reaching a story can be, and how it can evolve or change through adaption and appropriation. The exhibition positions fan produced material centre stage, and the inspiration point for new artwork to be created by artists, flipping the usual processes and relationships on the head.

In this session, philosophers Dr. Joe Saunders and Andrew Garford Moore consider the value of democracy and whether we actually live in a democratic society, before facilitating an audience discussion. The discussion will be informal, will not assume any prior knowledge and is open to all. Audience participation is very much encouraged but not essential.
