Welcome to 2016 and the new QUAD brochure for April – June With FORMAT off year exhibition and events underway we are already launched into our season of festivals. FORMAT continues to be the UK’s most recognised Photography Festival and reGeneration3 is an innovative selection of emerging photographers. QUAD is the host of Derby Film Festival in April /May. Last year’s selection of Festival Previews proved to be some of the big hitters of 2015, so be sure to catch them all with a bargain Festival Pass. In June Derby Book Festival, after last year’s success, will hold many exciting events here. QUAD’s Summer Nights Festival has spread ever wider across the UK this year. All three festivals have their own brochures so please be sure to pick one up from QUAD. Added to all this we have a fantastic array of live screenings (so many that we couldn’t fit them all in this brochure; details of screenings beyond the next three months are on the QUAD website!) with many events celebrating Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary. In more QUAD Cinema News, we now have our brand new cinema projectors installed and have upgraded to a 4K cinema projector in Cinema 1. Don’t miss some specially restored 4k films arriving at QUAD where you see the 4K symbol in the programme. We are not advertising screening dates in this brochure for most of our films. Weekly screening times and details of new films going on sale are announced every Tuesday. The best way to find out which films are screening and to see full weekly listings is to sign up for the FREE QUAD e-flyer, sent straight to your inbox with film times and a reminder of upcoming events. Sign up at bit.ly/quadenews For those of you who are not online, either call QUAD Box Office to hear a recorded message of each week’s screening times, or pick up a printed copy from QUAD Box Office or from your local library; all updated every Tuesday. We are also happy to post out a copy of the weekly listings in the post to anyone who provides stamped addressed envelopes, just ask at the Box Office. Adam Buss, QUAD CEO

Vincent (Matthias Schoenarts), a special forces soldier returns from a tour of duty to his native south of France. Diagnosed with PTSD and deemed unfit to return to duty, Vincent works as private security for a wealthy Lebanese businessman, secretly an illegal arms dealer. When his employer leaves for a business trip, his wife Jessie (Diane Kruger) and young son are placed under Vincent’s protection. As Vincent fights against his sense of paranoia, Jessie’s privileged world starts to collapse from her husband’s criminal dealings. Director Alice Winocour (writer of the excellent upcoming Mustang) handles this intensely compelling psychological drama with an assured hand.

Dheepan France 2015 115 mins Dir: Jacques Audiard

From the director of A Prophet and Rust And Bone, comes this tale of Dheepan, a Tiger (Tamil freedom fighter). In Sri Lanka the Civil War is reaching its end and defeat is near. Dheepan flees to France with two strangers, a woman and a little girl, and becomes the caretaker of a run-down housing block. He begins to build a home for his ‘wife’ and ‘daughter’ but the daily inner city violence reopens war wounds. “Audiard possesses a lyricism that makes his film stand out (…) Immensely powerful” The Guardian

Free State Of Jones

The Here After

UK 2015 102 mins Dir: Gavin Hood

USA 2016 Dir: Gary Ross

Sweden 2015 102 mins Dir: Magnus Von Horn

Helen Mirren, Aaron Paul, Barkhad Abdi and Alan Rickman (in his final screen performance) star in Gavin Hood’s searing new thriller which investigates the widespread use (and questionable morality) of drone warfare in conflicts by western governments. Mirren plays a stern colonel stationed at an army base, Aaron Paul a drone pilot in Nevada and Alan Rickman a lieutenant in the midst of warring politicians. “Effortless switching between continents and maintaining authenticity in each, [Hood] ramps up the tension as morality is pitted against necessity with quick yet fateful choices being made” The Guardian

Set during the US Civil War, this tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight (Matthew McConaughey), and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi, to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State Of Jones. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War. With Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle) and Keri Russell (Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes).

S

The feature debut by Magnus Von Horn screened to acclaim in the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes 2015. Shot on film by Ida cinematographer Lucasz Zal, it is a taut, chilly and morally complex drama that follows John, a teenager who’s released from youth detention to his father, but finds it difficult to rebuild his life as he’s still ostracised by his classmates and the wider community for his crime. Horn drip feeds the information slowly ratcheting up the tension alongside powerful performances.

Green Room

Florence Foster Jenkins UK/USA 2016 110 mins Dir: Stephen Frears

Florence Foster Jenkins (Meryl Streep) was a New York heiress who had a single dream, to become a famous opera singer, and was not going to let a small matter like her terrible voice stand in her way. Hugh Grant co-stars as St. Clair Bayfield, the English Broadway actor who was in love with Florence and sought to help her fulfil her dream. Director Frears (Philomena, The Queen) brings a lightness of touch to this true life tale of perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds.

USA 2015 94 mins Dir: Jeremy Saulnier

High Rise

Jeremy Saulnier’s much anticipated follow up to the wonderful revenge thriller Blue Ruin, equally pulls no punches. Having been stiffed on payment for a gig, a punk band is forced to make a detour and play an extra show in order to pay for fuel to get home. Pat (Anton Yelchin), Sam (Alia Shawcat), Reece and Tiger find themselves playing in front of a gathering of neo-Nazis. Just when it looks like they are home free, they stumble across a murder and are trapped in the venue’s green room. Suspicion, doubt and fear from both camps culminate in violent acts that supremacist leader Darcy (Sir Patrick Stewart) and his right hand man Gabe (Macon Blair) attempt to keep under control.

Ben Wheatley moves from the low budget A Field In England to a High Rise in a future England. Tom Hiddleston plays Dr Robert Laing who moves into a luxurious new apartment block, a shining beacon of modernism. He is quickly seduced by its social scene, going to glamourous cocktail parties and hobnobbing with Royal (Jeremy Irons), the architect who designed the building. But then as flaws begin to emerge in the building, the cracks start to show in the social strata.

From Friday 1st April UK 2015 112 mins Dir: Ben Wheatley

Mustang

UK 2015 85 mins Dir: Scott Graham

USA 2015 100 mins Dir: Don Cheadle

France/Turkey/Germany/Qatar 2015 97 mins Dir: Deniz Gamze Erguven

From the director of the BAFTA nominated Shell (2012), Iona follows young mother Iona (Ruth Negga – Marvel’s Agents Of Shield) who is returning to the island of her birth from where she takes her name. With her teenage son, Billy, she is seeking refuge from events that happened to them in Glasgow. Their move exposes the tormented Billy to a more gentle way of life that Iona rejected when she left. Powerful performances abound in this intense and beguiling story set against a backdrop of outstanding beauty.

A passion project for its star, writer and director Don Cheadle, Miles Ahead is a free form biopic of undisputed jazz great Miles Davis. Eschewing a traditional structure, Cheadle opts to imaginatively inhabit Davis as a created character and persona. Utilising flashbacks and a loose, improvisatory style, Cheadle effortlessly evokes the period as well as his subject’s proud, neurotic swagger and turbulent life as he recounts his exploits to Rolling Stone reporter Dave Braden (Ewan McGregor).

Early summer. In a village in northern Turkey, Lale and her four sisters are walking home from school, playing innocently with some boys. The immorality of their play sets off a scandal that has unexpected consequences. The family home is progressively transformed into a prison; instruction in homemaking replaces school and marriages start being arranged. The five sisters who share a common passion for freedom, find ways of getting around the constraints placed on them. “

Cliff makes the mistake of planning while drunk and Wigsy, a confirmed idiot, follows through with the crime and in the darkest hours of the night kidnaps the ref ! The beautiful game just got ugly! In this taut and tense thriller, George Clooney plays Lee Gates, a bombastic TV personality whose popular financial network show has made him the money wiz of Wall Street. But after he hawks a high tech stock that mysteriously crashes, an irate investor Kyle Budwell (Derby’s Jack O’Connell) takes Gates, his crew and his ace producer Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts) hostage live on air. Unfolding in real time, Gates and Fenn must find a way to keep themselves alive while simultaneously uncovering the truth behind a tangle of big money lies. With Dominic West, Giancarlo Esposito and Caitriona Balfe (Outlander).

Our Little Sister (Umimachi Diary)

S

Japan 2015 128 mins Dir: Hirokazu Kore-eda

A beautiful, graceful, meticulously filmed tale of three sisters in their twenties – nurse Sachi, bank worker Yoshino and shop girl Chika – who live together in a rambling ancestral home they jokingly refer to as an ‘adult dorm’. Their world changes when their estranged father dies and they meet smart, younger half-sister Suzu. Impulsively taking her in, they adjust their set up to incorporate her as a baby sister, and partly as a quasi-daughter. Kore-eda’s brilliance lies in taking a story with seemingly limited dramatic potential and turning it into a heart-breaking family saga of immense emotional power.

The Pearl Button Chile 2015 82 mins Dir: Patricio Guzman

After the acclaimed Nostalgia For The Light (2010), Guzman takes us on an equally spellbinding documentary journey into the ocean of Southern Chile. Using archive images and gorgeous new footage, The Pearl Button conveys ideas of history, geography and native memory to stunning effect. The film investigates Chile’s longest border – 2670 miles of coastline, the history of the indigenous Patagonian people, the first English sailors and the country’s political prisoners.

The Song Of Bernadette

Tale Of Tales

Wednesday 15th June at 7:00pm USA 1943 156 mins Dir: Henry King

This is the story of the young girl Bernadette’s vision of the Virgin Mary In 1858 France, at the now sacred spot at Lourdes. Bernadette, an adolescent peasant girl, has a vision of a ‘beautiful lady’ in the city dump. While never claiming it to be anything else, the townspeople assume it to be the Virgin Mary. The government think she is crazy and attempt to supress her and her followers but Bernadette attracts wider and wider attention and the phenomenon takes over the town…

Italy 2015 125 mins Dir: Matteo Garrone

Gomorrah Director’s English language debut eschews the fairytale warmth of Disney for a more European Grim take on these tales of princes and princesses. This portmanteau of folk myths published by Neopolitan poet Gianbattista Basile is visually sumptuous and sends the audience into another world. A renaissance fairytale that has to be experienced on the big screen! With Salma Hayek, John C Reilly, Vincent Cassell and a wonderful Toby Jones. “…a standout movie. Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian.

There will be an introduction by Film Lecturer David Leicester about the film and there will be a post screening talk by Fran Wickes about the link to Derby’s St Mary’s Lady Chapel.

Son Of Saul

S

Hungary 2015 107 mins Dir: László Nemes

In this unforgettable Holocaust drama, Saul is a Hungarian-Jewish prisoner in Auschwitz whose horrific job in the Sonderkommando – group of prisoners given special tasks and minor privileges – is to help burn the camp’s dead. Finding a body he takes to be his son’s, he tries to arrange a clandestine burial while the Sonderkommando are planning to destroy the crematorium. Saul is intent on his personal quest, to grant his son a burial and restore his humanity. Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes, Best Foreign Language winner at the Golden Globes and at the Oscars this year. “An outstanding, excoriating look at evil in Auschwitz… a movie of extraordinary focus and courage” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

S

USA/Palestine 2015 80 mins Dir: Amber Fares

With the West Bank as a backdrop, tense military occupation sadly the norm and their civil liberties restricted, five young Palestinian women establish themselves as the first all-female race car driving team in the Middle East. This fascinating study reveals them as remarkable women battling repression of all kinds: access to practise grounds, gender bias and societal pressures as well as internal disputes.

Victoria has screened to acclaim at festivals including Toronto and the Berlinale where it won a Silver Bear award for Cinematography – unsurprisingly, as this is a one shot, fluid, continuous take. But the film isn’t memorable just because of the technical brilliance, but also the way in which we are thrown into a vivid, late-night in Berlin, where a young Spanish woman is out with her four Berliner best friends. Events unfold in real time as things go from a late night party atmosphere and take a darker turn. An incredible heist thriller.

This brand new restoration plays out on QUAD’s stunning new 4k projector giving full scope to Kurosawa’s epic interpretation of King Lear as a jidaigeki epic. Ran stands for chaos, turmoil or fury in Japanese, befitting Shakespeare’s vision of a nihilistic world turned upside down. Borrowing narrative elements from the legend of Mori Motonari (a 16th century warlord) as well as Lear, Ran stars Tatsuya Nakadai as the vain, arrogant Great Lord Hidetora Ichimonji, who at seventy decides to abdicate and divide his domain amongst his three sons. Spectacularly beautiful, with gorgeous, colour-saturated frames, it is an undoubted masterpiece. Introduced by Satori Screen’s Peter Munford.

S

Friday 1st April at 8:45pm Hong Kong 1985 99 mins Dir: Jackie Chan

Saturday 2nd April at 6:15pm Hong Kong 2005 100 mins Dir: Johnnie To

Following his disappointment with the US produced The Protector (1985), Hong Kong Superstar Jackie Chan wrote and directed this crime story vehicle to showcase his wide variety of skills in front of and behind the camera. The result is a hugely influential blend of action, comedy and crime and remains perhaps one of the best examples of Hong Kong action cinema.

Johnnie To is one of Hong Kong’s most important contemporary film-makers and this is one of his greatest works. Starring Hong Kong acting heavyweights Simon Yam and Tony Leung Ka-fai, Election focuses on the selection of a new triad leader and explores a string of issues from generational conflict to tradition and loyalty. At the same time Election is a pointed reflection on the politics of post-1977 Hong Kong.

That Demon Within (Advised ) S Saturday 2nd April at 8:45pm Hong Kong 2014 111 mins Dir: Dante Lam

Quiet and distant cop Dave (Daniel Wu) is increasingly haunted by the violent images of a criminal gang who use traditional demon masks when committing their crimes. Truth, reality and imagination begin to blur in this stylish film which is a taut and ultimately unsettling psychological thriller.

As Tears Go By

Sunday 3rd April at 6:00pm Hong Kong 2015 120 mins Dir: Ringo Lam

Sunday 3rd April at 8:30pm Hong Kong 1988 102 mins Dir: Wong Kar-wai

Ringo Lam, the director of one of the most influential Hong Kong crime films, City On Fire (1987), returns to the crime genre with this exciting and stylish neo-noir. Starring Louis Koo and Shawn Yue, Wild City offers a classic cat and mouse tale as former cop and his wayward brother quickly get out of their depth when they take on a ruthless gang of Taiwanese gangsters.

A classic gangster film about loyalty, ambition and respect. It centres on Wah, a tough criminal specialising in debt collecting for the mob, who has to continually look out for his best friend Fly. When Ngor arrives in Hong Kong her presence makes Wah question his life. With a stellar cast including Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung and Maggie Cheung, the influence of As Tears Go By can still be seen on contemporary Hong Kong crime films over two decades after its release.

Underground Sunday 10th April at 3:00pm UK 1928 84 mins Dir: Anthony Asquith

Bert, an electrician, and Bill, a London Underground porter both fall in love with shop worker Nell. But when Nell chooses Bill, Bert resorts to devious tactics. The social spaces of 1920s London (parks, pubs and shops) play an important role in Anthony Asquith’s working-class love story. Most central to the narrative of the film, as the title suggests, is the London Underground itself, its bustling public corridors and carriages providing an arena in which people from all walks of life intermingle. This screening features live music accompaniment from the HARMONIEBAND with a new score by Paul Robinson. Harmonieband have made appearances at many UK film festivals and Art Centres. The ensemble has also travelled widely in Europe and including visits to the Dresden Musikfestpiele, the Giornate Del Cinema Muto in Italy and three tours of the Brabant, the last of which featured Paul Robinson’s score to Cocteau’s Le Sang d’un Poète. www.harmonieband.com

Hosted by David Tennant live from Stratford-upon-Avon this unique event marks the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. LIVE THEATRE

RSC: Hamlet

RSC: King Lear

Wednesday 8th June at 7:00pm UK 2016 Director Simon Godwin

Wednesday 12th October at 7:00pm Encore: Wednesday 19th October at 2:00pm

Hamlet has the world at his feet. Young, wealthy and living a hedonistic life studying abroad. Then word reaches him that his father is dead. Returning home he finds his world is utterly changed, his certainties smashed and his home a foreign land. Struggling to understand his place in a new world order he faces a stark choice. Submit, or rage against the injustice of his new reality. Simon Godwin (The Two Gentlemen of Verona) directs Paapa Essiedu as Hamlet in Shakespeare’s searing tragedy. As relevant today as when it was written, Hamlet confronts each of us with the mirror of our own mortality in an imperfect world.

King Lear has ruled for many years. As age begins to overtake him, he decides to divide his kingdom amongst his children, living out his days without the burden of power. Misjudging his children’s loyalty and finding himself alone in the wilderness, he is left to confront the mistakes of a life that has brought him to this point. RSC Associate Artist Antony Sher plays King Lear, one of the greatest parts written by Shakespeare in this, one of Shakespeare’s most epic and powerful plays, directed by RSC Artist Director Gregory Doran.

Romeo And Juliet: Branagh Theatre Live

RSC: Cymbeline Wednesday 28th September at 7:00pm

Thursday 7th July at 7:15pm

Encore: Monday 3rd October at 2:00pm

Encores: Monday 11th July at 7:00pm & Tuesday 12th July at 2:00pm

Cymbeline is a ruler of a divided Britain. When Innogen, the only living heir, marries her sweetheart in secret, an enraged Cymbeline banishes him. But a powerful figure behind the throne is plotting to seize power and murder them both. Innogen embarks on a dangerous journey that will reunite Cymbeline with a lost heir and reconcile the young lovers. Melly Still directs Shakespeare’s rarely performed romance.

A new vision of Shakespeare’s heart-breaking tale of forbidden love, Branagh and his creative team present a modern passionate version of the classic tragedy. A longstanding feud between Verona’s Montague and Capulet families brings about devastating consequences for two young lovers caught in the conflict. Kenneth Branagh directs Richard Madden and Lily James as Romeo and Juliet and Sir Derek Jacobi as Mercutio.

GLOBE ON SCREEN 2016 BFI Presents

Richard III + Live Post Screening Q&A Thursday 28th April at 7:30pm UK 1995 104 mins

It is the 1930s, and a long and bloody civil war has divided the nation as two powerful families battle for the crown. The end of the war comes suddenly when the reigning King and his heir are killed by the Commander-in-Chief of the York faction, Richard of Gloucester. Richard’s elder brother, Edward, takes the throne, establishing a shaky peace over the nation. But Richard, shunning the dreary calm of peacetime, turns his attention to a new, private war within the House of York. Brother to a sickly King and Lord Protector to a vulnerable young heir, he sets in motion a murderous plot to divide his family, eliminate his rivals and usurp the throne.

Measure For Measure Tuesday 17th May at 7:00pm & Thursday 19th May at 1:00pm

”What’s mine is yours, and what is yours is mine.” (Act V, Scene I) After a history of quirky adaptations, this lesser known work is now restored to its classic glory. In this story of secret identities and manipulation, the audience are invited to unravel the layers of intrigue skilfully crafted by a superb cast and the directorial prowess of Dominic Dromgoole in his final production for the Globe Theatre.

A striking adaptation of Richard III – transferring the action to an imagined war-wracked Europe of the 1930s and transforming Shakespeare’s most notorious villain into a fascistic despot. This special cinema event features a new 10 minute documentary, the feature film and a live 30 minute discussion with Sir Ian McKellen and Director Richard Loncraine broadcast live from the BFI Southbank.

The Merchant Of Venice Tuesday 28th & Thursday 30th June at 7:00pm

”If you prick us, do we not bleed?” (Act III, Scene I) Jonathan Pryce provides an enigmatic performance in this iconic battle between greed and love. Pryce’s Shylock is not only convincing in its duality but helps provide additional gravitas to Munby’s moving production. This tale of prejudice and destructive selfinterest paired with Pryce’s memorable interpretation makes this a must-see.

Richard II Tuesday 19th & Thursday 21st July at 7:00pm

“Woe, destruction, ruin, and decay; the worst is death and death will have his day.” (Act III, Scene II) Simon Godwin delivers a dynamic portrayal of a play filled with both violence and comedic irony. Starring Charles Edwards (Downton Abbey, Philomena), Godwin’s production delves into the meaning of kingship and the rising powers that can destroy it. The rich colours and lavish costumes of this historical play transfer superbly to the big screen.

FORMAT INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL OFF YEAR

Curator Tours: every Friday during reGeneration3

reGeneration3 26th March – 12th June 2016, QUAD Gallery & QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces

reGeneration3 brings together 50 artists with 25 different nationalities, representing some 40 art institutions. Their work is distinguished by their multidisciplinarity, ranging from printing and photographic series, artists’ books, multimedia installations, videos, projections, films and performances, to on-site installations. FORMAT presents the first UK showing of this exhibition, curated by Musée de l’Elysée, Switzerland. FORMAT presents the first showing in the UK of this exhibition, curated by Anne Lacoste, assisted by Lydia Dorner and Emilie Delcambre, from the Musée de l’Elysée (Lausanne, Switzerland). reGeneration3 is an innovative international project devoted to the emerging photographic scene launched in 2005 by the Musée de l’Elysée, Switzerland. Although many similar projects have seen the day since then, the Musée de l’Elysée decided to embark on a third edition on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, one that would focus on the multifaceted nature of photography. Almost one hundred art academies worldwide responded to their call for applications and submitted up to five portfolios of the best work of their recently graduated students. After a careful review of the 400 applications submitted, three major themes were identified as being representative of the emerging art scene: the variety of approaches for dealing with documentary subjects; the question of memory; and the wealth of aesthetic photographic expressions inspired by the history of the medium and, more broadly, the history of art. Exhibition supported by Swiss Cultural Fund UK and Pro Helvetia. For our full programme of talks and tours visit: formatfestival.com/whats-on

Join QUAD Curators for insightful and illuminating tours of the exhibition reGeneration3 in QUAD Gallery & QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces All tours are Free; meet at QUAD Box Office.

Doug Fishbone’s Leisure Land Golf 1st July – 4th September, 2016 QUAD Gallery

QUAD presents Doug Fishbone’s Leisure Land Golf, a fully playable 10 hole mini-golf course, designed by artists: John Akomfrah, Yara El-Sherbini, Doug Fishbone, Ellie Harrison, Candice Jacobs, Hetain Patel, Lindsay Seers, Yinka Shonibare MBE, Ines & Eyal Weizman and Reactor. Fishbone’s course invited the artists to respond to ‘The Leisure Principle’, where consumer satisfaction is prioritised at all costs. Each hole can be read as an individual artwork, but by playing a round and immersing oneself in the game, players experience at times a disturbing sense of a world misshapen by our consumer habits and desires. Also accompanying the project is Sunscreen, which features 40 digital artworks.

Doug Fishbone’s Leisure Land Golf was originally commissioned by EM15 for the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. EM15 is an East Midlands partnership between New Art Exchange, QUAD, One Thoresby Street, and Beacon Art Project with support from Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham.
