Napoleon Sunday 13th November at 2:00pm France 1927 330 mins Dir: Abel Gance

Tuesday 25th October at 7:30pm Germany 1922 81 mins Dir: F W Murnau

One of the classics of silent cinema, genre cinema and, indeed, cinema full stop, Nosferatu s FW Murnau’s legendary vampire tale. This film marked the first appearance on screen of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and remains arguably the eeriest and most magical of the many film versions of this famous supernatural tale. Murnau’s use of real locations instead of stylized studio sets to create atmosphere, his deployment of special effects such as negative exposure and fast-speed motion to suggest a ghostly ride, and his casting of Max Schreck as the gaunt, spectral figure of Dracula make this one of the director’s most formally innovative works. The magnetic performance by Max Schreck elevates the tale above the familiarity of the story and keeps the film relevant nearly 100 years after its first showing. Paul Robinson’s beguiling score is performed by the three piece HarmonieBand (piano, clarinet, and viola), featuring a delightful mixture of styles underpinned by cabaret sounds, American Minimalism and nods to the work of Kurt Weil.

Abel Gance’s heroic depiction of the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte has long been hailed a landmark in cinema history. Reconstructed after decades of painstaking work by film historian Kevin Brownlow, the film has developed a legendary status. Featuring ground-breaking technical innovations – including its famous triptych finale – and an epic running time of 5 ½ hours, the films exclusive availability on 35mm has limited it to a rare number of screenings. This definitive restoration, with a mammoth 7.1 score by Carl Davis, presents Gance’s masterpiece in all its glory and is a must-see for cinephiles throughout the world. Ahead of this monumental screening there will be a (very) short introduction by QUAD’s Peter Munford.

Sully It’s A Wonderful Life Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Set in post war America, this film sees Seymour Levov watch his seemingly perfect life fall apart, as his daughter embraces the social and political upheavals of the 1960s that threaten to destroy their family unit. Ewan McGregor makes his directorial debut and stars alongside Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly and Dakota Fanning in this ambitious adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Philip Roth.

Reinhard Heydrich, the third most powerful man in the Nazi Reich and the principal architect of the Final Solution to the Jewish Question, died on June 4th 1942, the result of an assassination plot by Czechoslovak paratroopers. The operation, named Anthropoid, is brought to life here as an oppressive drama and a study of human behaviour in critical situations. Set in New York, seventy years before the events in Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone, the film follows the adventures of Scamander among the secret community of witches and wizards in the Big Apple. Free State Of Jones

The Girl On The Train

USA 2016 140 mins Dir: Gary Ross

USA 2016 Dir: Tate Taylor

Set during the US Civil War, this tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight (Matthew McConaughey), and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi, to secede from the Confederacy, creating a ‘Free State Of Jones’. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War. With Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle) and Keri Russell (Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes).

Based on the massive best-selling novel, Emily Blunt returns to leading lady status after last year’s scintillating Sicario with this tense mystery thriller. Rachel Watson (Blunt) takes the same train to work in London every day which passes by her old house. Her ex-husband (Justin Theroux) still lives there with his new wife (Rebecca Ferguson) and child. In an effort to distract herself from the painful memories she starts fantasising about the seemingly perfect couple she passes by each day, until one morning she witnesses something shocking and becomes entangled in the mystery. With Luke Evans, Edgar Ramirez and Lisa Kudrow.

This is a heist picture about two bank robbing brothers Toby and Tanner (Chris Pine and Ben Foster) who only steal small-denomination untraceable bills. On their trail is Texas Ranger Marcus (played by the ever watchable Jeff Bridges) clad in Stetson and sunglasses, and his partner, native American Alberto (Gil Birmingham). A stellar behind the camera line-up teams Starred Up director David MacKenzie with Taylor Sheridan, writer of the excellent Sicario, alongside a score by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, for this violent, cynical western set in Texas.

I, Daniel Blake UK 2016 100 mins Dir: Ken Loach

The triumphant winner of this year’s Cannes Palme D’Or, Ken Loach’s fierce, emphatic drama is purportedly his last film. I, Daniel Blake follows the titular character, a fifty something man living in Newcastle who, after suffering a heart attack, seeks to claim state benefits. Meanwhile he befriends Katie (Hayley Squires) – a single mother to two children, who’s also suffering on the bread line. Overwhelmingly moving, the film is a stark reminder of the profound injustices of life in contemporary Britain and the brutal inhumanity of the system, making it painfully clear that issues so often invoked theoretically in the media in fact result in real human suffering, which exists in plain sight.

The Innocents (Les Innocentes)

France/Poland 2016 115 mins Dir: Anne Fontaine

This piercing drama by Anne Fontaine (Coco Before Chanel) is set in a convent in a ravaged Poland at the end of WWII and based on a haunting true story. Mathilde, a young French doctor working for the Red Cross is sent to help concentration camp survivors outside Warsaw. Visiting a nearby convent, she makes a disquieting discovery: several nuns within the convent are in advanced stages of pregnancy after the systematic rape by Soviet soldiers during the war that has left them traumatised and questioning their faith. Begged by the nuns to help them with their respective pregnancies, Mathilde does so – all the while hiding this new commitment from her lover and boss.

Lo And Behold: The Reveries Of The Connected World Thursday 13th October at 6:00pm USA 2016 98 mins Dir: Werner Herzog

Oscar nominated documentarian Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, Cave Of Forgotten Dreams) chronicles the virtual world from its origins to its outermost reaches, exploring the digital landscape with the same curiosity and imagination he previously trained on earthly destinations as disparate as the Amazon, the Sahara, the South Pole and the Australian outback. Herzog leads viewers on a journey through a series of provocative conversations that reveal the ways in which the online world has transformed how virtually everything in the real world works – from business to education, space travel to healthcare, and the very heart of how we conduct our personal relationships. The film will be followed by a Q&A with Werner Herzog broadcast live via Satellite from Picturehouse Central where the London premiere is being held.

The Light Between Oceans USA/New Zealand/UK 2016 133 mins Dir: Derek Cianfrance

My Scientology Movie Monday 10th October (screening time to be confirmed) UK/USA 2015 99 mins Dir: John Dower

Following a long fascination with the religion and with much experience in dealing with eccentric, unpalatable and unexpected human behaviour, the beguilingly unassuming Louis Theroux won’t take no for an answer when his request to enter the Church’s headquarters is turned down. Inspired by the Church’s use of filming techniques, and aided by ex-members of the organization, Theroux uses actors to replay some incidents people claim they experienced as members in an attempt to better understand the way it operates. In a bizarre twist, it becomes clear that the Church is also making a film about Louis Theroux. Suffused with a good dose of humour and moments worthy of a Hollywood script, My Scientology Movie is as outlandish as it is revealing. The film will be followed by a Q&A with Louis Theroux live via Satellite from the Royal Festival Hall. Tickets: £12, £10 Concessions & £9 QUAD Members

The Lovers And The Despot UK 2016 98 mins Dir: Ross Adam & Robert Cannan

For many years Shin Sang-Ok and Choi Eun-Hee were the golden couple of South Korean cinema. Shin was a successful film-maker and his beautiful wife was his leading star. The documentary mixes an illuminating interview with Choi with a wealth of meticulously chosen archive clips to illustrate the story of this astonishing duo. What unfolds is an extraordinarily compelling true story of intrigue, kidnap and enforced imprisonment, featuring movie stars, spies and celluloid as North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il kidnaps the duo to make movies for him. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction.

Friday 4th November at 8:30pm UK 2016 74 mins Dir: Sam Derby-Cooper, Claude Knight & Luke Scott

This immensely engaging archive and character-driven documentary, investigating the birth of Nottingham’s vibrant hip hop and breakdancing scene, is full of energy, charm and heart. In the mid ‘80s, Nottingham played host to a rising fascination with hip hop and breakdance culture: its infamous Rock City jams on Saturday afternoon enabled a generation to escape the confines of inner city life and became an institution for break-dancers across the UK. NG83 combines present-day interviews with five original B-Boys (and B-Girls), plus a wealth of previously unseen video footage, to shine a light on a movement that shaped the lives of many. Occasionally very poignant – with its insight into both particular personalities and the wider social forces of the time, including the widespread racism that affected many, and the difficulty faced by many of the dancers in sustaining similar passions in adult life – it’s also nostalgic and upbeat, humorous and full of the infectious, all important breakdancing. We will be joined at this screening by members of the directorial team for and an introduction and a post screening Q&A.

Nocturnal Animals USA 2016 120 mins Dir: Tom Ford

Director Tom Ford returns to filmmaking seven years after his stunning debut A Single Man with this tale of a woman (Amy Adams) who is forced to confront the demons of her past, as she is drawn into the world of a thriller novel written by her ex-husband (Armie Hammer). The novel entitled Nocturnal Animals revolves around a family vacation that turns violent and deadly. With Jake Gyllenhaal, Isla Fisher, Laura Linney and Michael Shannon.

Paterson USA 2016 113 mins Dir: Jim Jarmusch

Paterson (Adam Driver) is a bus driver in the city of Paterson, New Jersey – they share the same name. Every day, he adheres to a simple routine: he drives his daily route, observing the city as it drifts across his windshield and overhearing fragments of conversation swirling around him; he writes poetry in a notebook; he walks his dog; he stops in a bar and drinks exactly one beer; he goes home to his wife, Laura (Golshifteh Farahani). By contrast Laura’s life is changing constantly and Paterson loves Laura and supports her new found ambitions. This film quietly observes the triumphs and defeats of daily life, along with the poetry evident in its smallest details.

Richard Linklater: Dream Is Destiny USA 2016 93 mins Dir: Louis Black & Karen Bernstein

Queen Of Katwe South Africa/USA 2016 Dir: Mira Nair

David Oyelowo (Selma) and Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave) star in the vibrant true story of a young girl from rural Uganda (played by newcomer Madina Nalwanga) who discovers a passion for chess, and sets out to pursue her dream of becoming an international champion.

This feature documentary on the life and work of film-maker Richard Linklater is an unusual look at a fiercely independent style of film-making that arose from Austin, Texas in the ‘80s/’90s and how Linklater’s films sparked a low budget movement in the US and around the world. Linklater’s ability to showcase realistic characters and tell honest stories was evident from films like Slacker, Dazed And Confused, Before Sunrise and last year’s Oscar winning Boyhood.

Starfish

A United Kingdom

UK 2016 95 mins Dir: Bill Clark

UK 2016 Dir: Amma Asante

When Tom puts his small daughter to bed one December night, he has everything a man could want – a beautiful wife and a second baby on the way to complete their perfect family. By the next morning, all is in jeopardy as Tom succumbs to a devastating illness – sepsis. Based on the true-life story of Tom and Nicola Ray, this film looks at the journey from his diagnosis to the re-adjustment of his family life with two emotionally charged performances from Tom Riley and Joanne Froggatt. Unflinching, devastatingly honest but ultimately with a message of hope, strength and love, Starfish is an incredibly affecting film.

David Oyelowo follows up on his leading role in Selma by joining forces with Belle director Amma Asante for this true life tale of Seretse Khama, King Of Bechuanaland (modern day Botswana) and Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike), a London office worker he married in 1947, a marriage that had fierce opposition from their families and the British and South African governments. This film opened the BFI London Film Festival 2016 and stars Tom Felton (Harry Potter), Jack Davenport, Terry Pheto and Laura Carmichael (Downton Abbey).

UK 2016 103 mins Dir: Roger Spottiswoode

USA 2016 96 mins Dir: Clint Eastwood

UK 2016 122 mins Dir: Mat Whitecross

Based on the true life incident of Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the pilot behind the ‘Miracle On The Hudson’ when he guided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of 155 people aboard. While there was a great outpouring of praise by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career.

Featuring up close and personal footage, as well as never before seen archive material and interviews with the band, this Oasis documentary follows the band from the moment that the Gallagher brothers started making music together to the present day. From the same production team behind the excellent Amy, Mat Whitecross (Spike Island, Sex, Drugs & Rock & Roll) takes the directorial reins.

These buddy cops intimidate the inhabitants of New Mexico, plant cocaine on small-time hoods with bubble perms and drink a lot! But when they come across a British Lord who will not be pushed around, these carefree, chaotic cops become more entangled in a web of blackmail, abduction and drugs than they could have ever imagined. Irish Director John Michael McDonagh follows The Guard and The Calvary with this hyper-active buddy cop film.

The Graduate

Iran/Jordan/Qatar/UK 2016 84 mins Dir: Babak Anvari

When an Iraqi air raid hits, Shideh is left with her daughter Dorsa (Avin Manshadi), the two hiding in their building’s basement shelter. When he meets writer Ken, who has a script with real potential, and actress Minami, who could be a new muse, he decides it is time to get back in the game. Bread And Roses The Killing Of America Tuesday 1st November at 6:30pm USA 1981 90 mins Dir: Sheldon Renan

In 1982, filmmakers Sheldon Renan and Academy Award® nominee Leonard Schrader (Kiss Of The Spider Woman, Mishima, Blue Collar) created a graphic and provocative examination of America’s history with – and penchant for – senseless violence, mass shootings and cold-blooded murder. It was condemned as “exploitive and obscene” (The New York Times), acclaimed as “among the most controversial documentaries in the history of cinema” (Fantasia Festival), and never distributed, televised or made available for sale in the United States. This remains one of the most profoundly disturbing and still chillingly relevant documentary experiences of our time. There will be a post screening discussion around the themes of the film

Meet Me In St Louis Sunday 11th – Tuesday 13th December USA 1946 130 mins Dir: Vincente Minnelli

“Have yourself a merry little Christmas…” so sings Esther Smith (Judy Garland) to her sister Tootie as they ponder the prospect of the family leaving behind their loved ones in St Louis and relocating to New York. Minnelli’s tender, witty musical rivals the start of Welles’ The Magnificent Ambersons in expressing, elegantly and eloquently, a warm nostalgia for an easier, slower, gentler way of American life. The production design, Technicolor and songs contribute to the affectionate mood, but it’s the performance and the deceptively light script which supply emotional substance.” – Geoff Andrew, BFI

EXHIBITIONS

Three Months On: Dizzy Ink – Craig Proud & Benjamin Kay

GLITCHED: Quest for the Lost MacGuffin

24th September – 20th November 2016 QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces

Until 20th November 2016, QUAD Gallery

In the wake of our referendum to decide whether the United Kingdom should remain or leave the European Union, a number of promises were broken, facts were ‘clarified’ and statuses changed. On one hand, the leaders of the majority party resigned following their success, while on the other we’ve seen the UK economy prove itself more resilient than predicted, as new trade deals are negotiated from around the world. A nation divided as opinions formed, leading to a vote that has arguably changed the landscape of UK politics forever. Campaigns offered us a better life in return for our vote. Post-Brexit result, voters have been witness to the lack of integrity from both Leave and Remain campaigns. Critical points that swayed the public to either side have somewhat dissolved, leading to greater uncertainty surrounding our nation’s future.

GLITCHED: Quest for the Lost MacGuffin is an interactive exhibition in QUAD Gallery – an exploration game where the real and digital worlds collide. All, however, is not as it seems… A MacGuffin is a plot device in the form of some goal, desired object that the protagonist pursues, often with little or no narrative explanation. The specific nature of a MacGuffin is typically unimportant to the overall plot.

GLITCHED: Quest for the Lost MacGuffin is a game-like journey in which the gallery visitor/player explores an immersive set built within QUAD Gallery, consisting of ‘typical’ scenes from films: the detective office; the haunted hotel; the claustrophobic warehouse, ending on a train. The player searches for eight fragments of a ‘lost’ MacGuffin, fragments that exist as ‘Augmented Reality’ (AR) - visible only through the screen of a handheld tablet computer. Once the eight fragments have been found the ‘lost’ MacGuffin is revealed.

Three months on, the conversation is still raw. A second referendum is proposed, and campaigns continue to argue against the decision, all whilst MPs tackle the looming issue of Section 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.

Yet there are decoy MacGuffins to throw the player off the scent, and the gallery is full of ‘glitches’ – real-life or digital corruptions or fissures in the everyday world around us that will make the journey around the gallery very interesting indeed. GLITCHED: Quest for the Lost MacGuffin positions the gallery visitor in the heart of a sculptural installation, in search of objects that were once real and are certainly imagined. The exhibition considers questions of coercion and suggestion, mirroring a modern society were material objects are pursued, often for little long-lasting satisfaction.

Dizzy Ink presents an exhibition reflecting on the time spent after Brexit. Hindsight is beautiful thing: what opinions do the public now hold about the campaigns, the vote and the effects following the referendum, Three Months On? Through a series of workshops, curated submissions from both voting demographics, and their own designs inspired by informal conversations, the walls of QUAD’s Extra Gallery Spaces will become a display of artwork reflecting our nation’s divided beliefs. The exhibition will be an evolving entity, as submissions from around the Internet flow from an E-printer within the space. Contribute using Twitter handle, @ThreeMonthsOn. Using a single-colour printing method associated with official political applications, named Risograph, as well as the powerful lobbying method of wheat pasting posters directly to a public wall, the space becomes a mutual challenge of opinion. Our collective aim is to have the space continuously develop over the duration of the exhibition as it perpetuates the debate.

Three Months On: Workshop with Dizzy Ink Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd October, 11:00am – 5:00pm 50 minute sessions, FREE, but booking essential

Dizzy Ink artists Craig Proud and Benjamin Kay will lead a series of free workshops inviting participants to discover the Risograph printing process, and create their own artworks inspired by the themes of their exhibition Three Months On.

COMING SOON teamLab What a Loving and Beautiful World 9th December 2016 – 5th February 2017, QUAD Gallery

When your shadow touches a character the world that character embodies will appear and a new world will be created. The objects that are released from the characters go on to influence each other in the new world. Behind the projected world there is a 360 degree computer generated space. The objects that are born from the characters are placed at various positions within that space, and the physical influences and connections between the objects is calculated in real time, producing a complex and natural world. For example; if the

wind blows the objects are subjected to the physical influence of the wind; butterflies are frightened by fire, but attracted to flowers. Just as in nature no two moments are repeated, the passing moments of the world are never repeated and new visual worlds are constantly being created. Chinese Characters were first carved in turtle shell, ox or deer bones, and were engraved in bronze ware. At that time it can be said that each character contained its own world. Through the characters, the world that you have called up and the worlds that the people around you

call up connect and influence each other to create a new world. teamLab, formed in 2001, is a collective, interdisciplinary creative group based in Japan that brings together professionals from various fields of practice in the digital society: artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians, architects, web and print graphic designers and editors. Neville works at the intersection of art and documentary, investigating the social function of photography. He makes lens-based works which have been realised and disseminated in a large array of contexts, as both still and moving image pieces, slideshows, films, and giveaway books. His work has consistently looked to subvert the traditional role of social documentary practice, seeking to find new ways to empower the position of its subject over that of the author. Often working with closely knit communities, in a collaborative process intended to be of direct, practical benefit to the subject, his photographic projects to date have frequently made the towns he portrays the primary audience for the work.

Posse Galore: The Return Of The Wild West Heroes Film Course Wednesdays at 7:00pm, 6 weeks from 5th October

The western is one of the hardiest movie genres. Rumours that it has gone belly up have persisted since the heyday of Wayne and Eastwood, but its resilient heroes and cunning villains keep moseying back to our screens. Lecturer Darrell Buxton takes the reins to steer you through new terrain as we examine the way the western has adapted and re-emerged in modern times, from UNFORGIVEN to newly released Hell Or High Water. Pin on your Deputy badge, load the six-shooter, take a swig of your favourite moonshine and saddle up. Films covered will include: Dances With Wolves, Unforgiven, The Quick And The Dead, Django Unchained, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, True Grit, Brokeback Mountain, No Country For Old Men, The Proposition, Mad Max: Fury Road, El Mariachi, Bone Tomahawk and more. Course includes a free screening of Hell Or High Water on Wednesday 5th October at 6:20pm, introduced by Darrell Buxton. Course Fees: £45, £40 concessions & £38 QUAD Members
