“YOU TALKIN’ TO ME?” A MARTIN SCORSESE SEASON
Silence
The Color Of Money
USA 2016 161 mins Dir: Martin Scorsese
USA 1986 120 mins Dir: Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese directs this adaptation of the novel by Shusaku Endo about two young Portuguese Jesuit priests, Father Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Father Ferreira (Adam Driver) who face violence and persecution when they travel to seventeenth century Japan to locate their mentor (Liam Neeson). They witness the troubles of the Japanese Christians at the hands of the Japanese government as they attempt to purge the country of western influences. Rodrigues travels the countryside and begins to question his faith in the face of such suffering.
Proving that it is isn’t just the 21st Century Hollywood that has an obsession with sequels and remakes, here Martin Scorsese picks up the tale of Fast Eddie Felson from 1961’s The Hustler. He pairs Paul Newman’s pool shark with up-and-coming pool player, the cocky but talented Vincent Lauria (Tom Cruise). They hit the road as Eddie tries to teach Vincent how to be a hustler.
Taxi Driver USA 1976 113 mins Dir: Martin Scorsese
Goodfellas USA 1990 146 mins Dir: Martin Scorsese
Scorsese stepped back into the lives of 1990’s gangsters with this adaptation of the book Wiseguys by Nicholas Pileggi about the rise and fall of Mafia mobster turned informant Henry Hill. Ray Liotta plays Hill, a half Irish, half Sicillian Brooklyn kid who is adopted by neighbourhood gangsters and climbs the ranks of a Mafia Family. Winner of Best Supporting Actor for Joe Pesci’s terrifying performance as Tommy DeVito. With Robert DeNiro, Lorraine Bracco and Paul Sorvino.
One of the greatest movies ever made is reissued on the big screen. Robert DeNiro plays the isolated former Marine, who gets a job working as a taxi driver, hoping that the working nights will help his insomnia and distract him from his gnawing depression. But delving into the underbelly of New York only furthers his psychological dislocation from the world. A world class performance from Robert DeNiro as Travis Bickle drags the viewer into a dark and desperate world. With Harvey Keitel, Jodie Foster and Cybill Shepherd, alongside Bernard Herrmann’s ominous score and Paul Schrader’s excellent screenplay, this film is a tour de force. “ A film that stays in the bloodstream.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

The Birth Of A Nation USA 2016 120 mins Dir: Nate Parker
January The Birth Of A Nation Britain On Film: Railways Collateral Beauty The Dead Zone Eat That Question: Frank Zappa In His Own Words Goodfellas Hacksaw Ridge Jackie La La Land Life, Animated
Written, directed by and starring Nate Parker, this incendiary slave drama won the Audience and Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival last year. Set against the American South thirty years prior to the outbreak of the Civil War and based on a true story, it stars Parker himself as Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher in Virginia whose financially strained owner Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer) accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves on his plantation. As Nat both endures and witnesses countless terrible atrocities – against himself, his wife Cherry (Aja Naomi King) and their fellow slaves, he orchestrates a revolt in hopes of leading his people to freedom. Re-appropriating the title of D. W. Griffith’s infamous 1915 Klan propaganda film of the same name, Parker’s defiant film asks viewers to clearly and honestly review America’s brutal racial past – at a time its societal effects are still much in evidence.

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk USA 2016 113 mins Dir: Ang Lee
Told from the point of view of 19 year-old Private Billy Lynn who, along with his fellow soldiers in Bravo Squad, become heroes after a harrowing Iraq battle. The film takes a sweeping approach to find out what happened to the members of Bravo Squad, playing the public perception against the reality. The first film from Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) since 2012’s breath-taking Life Of Pi, this is an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Ben Fountain and stars an eclectic mix of Hollywood actors including Kristen Stewart, Chris Tucker, Steve Martin and Vin Diesel.
Denial UK 2016 110 mins Dir: Mick Jackson
Denial tells the compelling story of the legal battle between Jewish American historian Deborah Lipstadt (Rachel Weisz) and notorious Holocaust denier David Irving (Timothy Spall). It’s adapted by David Hare from Lipstadt’s own book about the 1996 libel case brought by Irving against her in London, forcing her to prove the essential truth that the Holocaust occurred and creating a landmark legal precedent. Denial is powered by performance, with Spall’s Irving a poisonous mix of insecurity and bravado, a man blinded by his own prejudice and amplified by bluster; while Weisz gives a nuanced turn as the impassioned Lipstadt, who finds herself representing an entire people in her quest to prove the truth, supported by her legal team (Andrew Scott and Tom Wilkinson). It’s an essential tale for our ‘post-fact’ times – with obvious contemporary parallels to Brexit politics and Donald Trump’s mendacious presidential campaign – documenting a pleasing and necessary triumph of truth, reason and forensic fact over ignorance and prejudice.
Collateral Beauty USA 2016 97 mins Dir: David Frankel
From the director of Hope Springs and The Devil Wears Prada comes this drama about a successful New York advertising executive (Will Smith) who suffers a great tragedy. When he retreats from life, his concerned friends try desperately to reconnect with him while he seeks answers from the Universe. A spiritual tale with an all-star cast, including Keira Knightley, Kate Winslet, Edward Norton, Michael Pena, Naomie Harris and Helen Mirren.
Eat This Question: Frank Zappa In His Own Words
The Founder
Wednesday 4th & Thursday 5th January France/Germany 2016 93 mins Dir: Thorsten Schutte
The Founder is the tale of Ray Kroc, the Illinois salesman who purchased a small hamburger restaurant chain in 1961 and grew it to the one of the world’s most recognisable brands, McDonalds. Michael Keaton takes the role of Ray Kroc and is attempting to snag a Best Actor Oscar after performing in the last two years Best Picture winners (Birdman, Spotlight). He is joined onscreen by Laura Dern, Nick Offerman, John Carroll Lynch (Fargo, Jackie) and Patrick Wilson.
Made up entirely from pre-exisiting interview footage and live performances, this film brings the enigmatic, divisive avant garde musician Frank Zappa into focus. A fascinating run through some of Zappa’s greatest – and weirdest – moments. This scratches the surface of the output from a fiercely unique performer.

USA 2016 144 mins Dir: Park Chan-wook

La La Land Screening from Friday 13th January USA 2016 128 mins Dir: Damien Chazelle
Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone give terrific performances in Whiplash director Damien Chazelle’s beguiling musical romance, La La Land. The setting is contemporary Hollywood, the tone light and airy, the story simple, but lent immense verve by the style of Chazelle’s direction and the chemistry and sheer charisma supplied by Stone and Gosling, who radiate charm, sincerity and emotional vulnerability as they open up to each other. They play wannabe movie star Mia and pianist Seb, both hobbled by frustrated ambition when they meet and fall in love. But success – when it finally arrives – comes at a personal cost. Rejecting cynicism in favour of sweet-natured, open-hearted romance and full of smartly choreographed musical numbers performed with heartfelt grace by its stars, Chazelle’s musical is being hailed a masterpiece – a contemporary Singin’ in the Rain – and a hot tip for awards season. “Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone shine in a sun-drenched musical masterpiece” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
Life, Animated USA 2016 91 mins Dir: Roger Ross Williams
Roger Ross William’s (God Loves Uganda) remarkable new documentary Life, Animated has won awards and acclaim at festivals across the US. Focusing on autistic teenager Owen, it tells the story of his fascination with classic Disney animations and how they have given him both a pathway to understanding language and a framework for making sense of the world. By evocatively interweaving classic Disney sequences with vérité scenes from Owen’s life, the film explores how identification and empathy with characters like Simba, Jafar, and Ariel offer a conduit for him to catalogue his emotions and interpret reality. Meanwhile, the film’s original animation sequences beautifully expand on Owen’s interior world as he deals with the challenges of growing up. This is an unsentimental and powerful coming-of-age tale, offering a moving insight into both the experience of autism and the transformative possibilities of cinema. “ Incredibly moving documentary…an educational achievement masquerading as a feel-good documentary, and a must watch. The Guardian
Loving USA 2016 123 mins Dir: Jeff Nichols
This 1958 set film tells the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, who are arrested and imprisoned because their interracial marriage violates Virginia’s laws. Joel Edgerton (Kinky Boots) and Ruth Negga (Iona, Preacher) star as the couple fighting the state. Jeff Nichols continues his great run of films after Take Shelter, Mud and Midnight Special with this understated film full of sensitive performances from a great cast.
Manchester By The Sea USA 2016 175 mins Dir: Kenneth Lonergan

There he must deal with caring for his nephew, coming back into contact with his ex-wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and confronting the weight of the past. As in his previous films You Can Count on Me (2000) and Margaret (2011), Manchester by the Sea evinces Lonergan’s eye for comedy amidst tragedy, a sprawling interest in an array of supporting characters and most of all an investigation into what constitutes the texture of real life.

It’s a broad, outrageously funny comedy about the relationship between a father and daughter. His daughter Ines (Sandra Hüller) – a sleek oil company advisor – is less amused by such jokes; but Winifried suspects she is unhappy and so kindly decides to show up at her offices in a new guise: that of ‘Toni Erdmann’. “ an uproarious movie with a lot of big laughs.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

The Holocaust and subsequent genocides took place because the local populations allowed insidious persecution to take root. Whilst some actively supported or facilitated state policies of persecution, the vast majority stood by silently – at best, afraid to speak out; at worst, indifferent. Bystanders enabled the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and subsequent genocides. This year’s theme explores the impact of genocide on subsequent generations. Expect spoken word contributions from the Armenian community, performances of Jewish, Bosnian and Ukrainian traditional music plus a band comprising members of both groups; dance performances from the internationally-renowned Derby-based troupe Hoverla and flamenco dancing by Derby’s Gypsy community, a performing arts presentation and much more from Derby’s diverse communities. Phantasm Friday 17th & Saturday 18th February USA 1979 88 mins Dir: Don Coscarelli
“The Ball is Back! When the residents of a sleepy Oregon town being dying under strange circumstances, inquisitive teen Mike sets out to unearth the truth. With big brother Jody and the local ice cream man in tow, Mike discovers the town’s malevolent mortician is behind the bizarre deaths and sets out on a deadly mission to stop him. A phantasmagorical fusion of surreal imagery, outlandish plotting and good, old fashioned scares, this low budget wonder is much imitated, but rarely matched. And it feels as fresh, inventive and downright bizarre as it did when it first emerged” – BFI London Film Festival

“Director Niami Itani fled with her family from Beirut to Ghazzeh in 1989, seeking refuge from the Lenanese Civil War. Despite living in poverty, Itani describes her childhood years in Ghazzeh as ‘the best days of my life’, as families lived in solidarity. Connecting with Khalil, a young Syrian refugee in Ghazzeh in 2012, Itani has created a film of profound sensitivity, chronicling the effects of trauma past and present, and their shared hopes for the future.” Edinburgh Film Festival

Cabaret Sunday 8th – Tuesday 10th January USA 1972 123 mins Dir: Bob Fosse
“Winner of eight Oscars, including Direction, Music, Actress (Liza Minnelli) and Supporting Actor (Joel Grey). The glamour of Berlin in the 1930s is offset by the menace of rising Nazism in Fosse’s brilliant, bitter-sweet musical. Minnelli creates in Sally Bowles one of cinema’s all time divas, and Joel Grey is unforgettable as the Cabaret’s master of ceremonies” – BFI
A devastating and courageous exploration of the international arms trade – the only business that counts its profits in billions and its costs in human lives. Based on the book The Shadow World by Andrew Feinstein, director Johan Grimonprez assembles an eye popping array of new and archival footage of weapons manufacturers, world leaders, arms dealers, military leaders and behind-the-scenes movers that come under scrutiny in the documentary. Exposing a shadow world of corruption, slush funds, drones, illicit bed partners and whole lot of lies and greed from the early 80s up to the present day. The aim is to perpetuate war in order to generate more profits.

EOS: I, Claude Monet Tuesday 21st February at 7:00pm & Thursday 23rd February at 1:00pm / 90 mins
In this striking film from award winning Phil Grabsky, we take a new look at arguably the world’s favourite artist – through his own words. Using letters and other private writings I, Claude Monet reveals new insight into the man who not only painted the picture that gave birth to impressionism but who was perhaps the most influential and successful painter of the 19th and 20th centuries. Monet’s life is a gripping tale about a man who, behind his sun-dazzled canvases, often suffered from feelings of depression, loneliness, even suicide. An unmissable cinematic immersion into some of the most loved and iconic scenes in Western Art.
EOS: The Artist’s Garden: American Impressionism Tuesday 21st March at 7:00pm & Thursday 23rd March at 1:00pm / 90 mins
Following the smash hit Painting The Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse comes a new film based on the hugely popular exhibition ‘The Artist’s Garden: American Impressionism and the Garden Movement, 1887-1920’ from the Florence Griswold Museum in Connecticut, widely considered a home of American Impressionism. aking its lead from French artists like Renoir and Cezanne, the T American impressionist movement followed its own path which over a thirty-year period reveals as much about America as a nation as it does about its art as a creative power-house. It’s a story closely tied to a love of gardens and a desire to preserve nature in a rapidly urbanizing nation. Travelling to studios, gardens and famous locations throughout the United States, UK and France, this mesmerising film is a feast for the eyes.

teamLab What a Loving, and Beautiful World QUAD Gallery, Until 5th February 2017
“Lose yourself in teamLab’s immersive lightworks. Outside on solid ground, real-world Japan takes some adjusting to. It’s quite easy to leave your mind behind amid the make-believe, where time, space and worry are dropped and imagination roams free” - Elly Parsons, Wallpaper The interdisciplinary creative collective teamLab from Japan are ‘Ultra-technologists’ who produce large-scale immersive installations that utilise the latest computer modelling techniques to create stunning interactive visual art experiences. Their 3-screen sublime interactive, computer generated immersive installation, What a Loving, and Beautiful World, premieres in the UK as an exhibition in QUAD Gallery.
What a Loving, and Beautiful World (2011), is a 3-screen installation of projected computer generated artworks which immerses audiences in a stunning interactive art experience in QUAD Gallery. The installation features twenty-two Sino-Japanese characters by the calligrapher Shishū which cascade down from ceiling to floor. The artwork is activated either by touch or by shadows which transform the images into new motifs associated with the meanings of the characters—mostly inspired by nature such as the sun, moon, water, trees and birds. As these images and the viewers interact with one another, more forms emerge that transform into ever-evolving installation landscape. Sound is also triggered and transformed by audience interaction which ultimately
generates a rich multi-sensory experience that is dependent upon the actions of visitors in the gallery and never repeats itself. About teamLab teamLab are at the forefront of innovative contemporary digital art worldwide. They are a unique collaboration that consists of over 400 members – including visual artists, computer scientists, mathematicians, CG animators, web designers, roboticists, educators, architects, and engineers of all kinds. Their aim is to achieve a balance between art, science, technology and creativity. They are known for their abundant use of natural motifs, vivid colours, participatory and socially engaged ideas alongside references to traditional Japanese culture. In many of their works the boundaries between the artwork and the viewer are blurred, which leads to audiences becoming part of the artwork itself. Find out more about them at www.team-lab.net
Will Hurt: Configurations Until 5th February 2017, QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces
Will Hurt presents his first solo exhibition, Configurations. Hurt works with computers to produce digital prints, generative animations and interactive software that draws on formal elements of architecture, the language of diagrams and the history of geometric abstraction with the aim of engaging viewers with the built environment. For Configurations, Hurt has produced new site-specific work in his ongoing Automated Spatial Transformations series in which software reconfigures digital models of the physical space the work is shown in. Here a software artwork and digital prints re-imagine the unique and characterful design that can be seen throughout QUAD’s Extra Gallery Spaces, translating, rotating and extruding QUAD’s architectural elements into new configurations. Exhibited alongside Hurt’s new work produced for QUAD is Abstract Playground AP1, a screen-based interactive artwork designed in collaboration with people with learning difficulties during a five week residency co-commissioned by Derbyshirebased organisations D-LAB and LEVEL Centre. Part abstracted re-composition of Modernist architecture concerned with how forms occupy physical / digital space, part musical instrument, Abstract Playground AP1 encourages users to “play” a potential building. Artists: Lida Adbul, Lisa Barnard , Ursula Biemann, Kenta Cobayashi, Hannah Darabi, Sohrab Hura, Zhang Jungang, Wanuri Kahiu, Ester Vonplon and Sadie Wechsler. An exhibition in response to the FORMAT17 theme of HABITAT, curated by Hester Keijser and Louise Clements that presents artists who encourage the viewer to speculate about futures imagined on a global scale, as they are brought about by the technologically induced changes in our planet’s biosphere on an epochal level. In particular, it focuses on how the selected artists re-imagine the ways that we inhabit the physical world, using diverse approaches to tell their stories. The artworks range from Ester Vonplon’s layered and intricately composed requiem for the melting glaciers in her native Switzerland, to Lida Adbul’s monumental video installation What we have overlooked, in which she returns to her homeland of Afghanistan to ask how the individual can deal with memories of a country so marked by war and tragedy. Especially for FORMAT, the Japanese transmedia artist Kenta Cobayashi will recreate his immersive and VR installation Island is Islands. Other works are by Ursula Biemann, Sohrab Hura, Sadie Wechsler, Hannah Darabi and more. All of the artists look at the extraordinary interconnected nature of the human spirit and the habitat that it encounters or creates.
