Aquarius

Britain On Film: Rural Life

S

Screening in April Brazil / France 2016 142 mins Dir: Kleber Mendonca Filho

In Aquarius, Brazilian writer-director Kleber Mendonca Filho returns to his hometown to continue exploring concerns about urban redevelopment in the coastal town of Recife. Here he offers a character study of rare complexity via a superb performance by Sonia Braga, icon of Brazilian cinema. Clara (Braga) is a retired music critic who finds herself as the last hold out in the battle to protect ‘The Aquarius’, the elegant 1940s apartment building in which she lives. When it becomes clear that no cheque is big enough to force her from her home, it provokes a series of escalating actions and reactions. A study in classism, nepotism and the lack of corporate accountability but also a portrait of modern Brazil and the wider statement of political intent that its citizens will resist corruption.

Sunday 23rd & Tuesday 25th April UK 1904-1981 75 mins Dir: Various

The second programme from the Britain On Film tour is an evocative exploration of the countryside of the UK, taking in the diverse and beautiful landscapes of all our home nations. Taking the audience down country lanes of the past, relive the work of the local blacksmith preparing shoes for the horses that will plough the fields, and the shepherd’s trials as he protects his flock from an encroaching storm. Be swept up in the homemade entertainment and giggles of children at the country fair and joyful freedoms of the dance in the village hall. Touching on all the technological, industrial and social changes that affected our countryside throughout the 20th Century, these films evoke and encourage not only nostalgia, but also broader and more meaningful reflections on the nature of rural life and village communities in the UK today.

Certain Women Friday 24th – Monday 27th March USA 2016 107 mins Dir: Kelly Reichardt

Gina’s (Michelle Williams) determination to build her dream home outside town puts her at odds with her husband, daughter and neighbours as her relentless drive causes tension in their shared lives. And, in the remote town of Belfrey, a lonely ranch hand (Lily Gladstone) stumbles upon a night class taught by a young law graduate (Kirsten Stewart) with whom she develops an ambiguous bond. Kelly Reichardt (Meek’s Cutoff, Wendy And Lucy) reunites for the third time with Michelle Williams in this deeply affecting, slow burning drama. “ …melancholy yet triumphant.

Fences Wednesday 1st & Thursday 2nd March USA 2016 139 mins Dir: Denzel Washington

Oscar Nominated Elle S Friday 10th – Thursday 23rd March France/Germany/Belgium 2016 131 mins Dir: Paul Verhoeven

We meet Michèle (Isabelle Huppert) in her Parisian home as she is attacked and raped by a masked intruder. The next day she goes to work as usual, and she is revealed to us anew as the powerful, emotionally infallible CEO of a gaming company. Gradually, we learn about her complex personal life and dark family history - including her father, an infamous criminal whose acts continue to haunt her, offering a deeper psychological backdrop to Michèle’s desire to turn the tables and wreak violent revenge on her attacker. Never one to steer from controversy, Verhoeven sets this rape revenge narrative against an unexpected backdrop of mordant comedy and erotic exploration. It’s a provocative, incendiary, brazen study of unacceptable desires, with a virtuoso performance by Huppert, and looks set to be one of the must-see arthouse titles of the year after rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival. Nominated for Best Actress.

This adaptation of the August Wilson award-winning play follows fifty-something rubbish collector (and almost pro-Baseball player) Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) as he struggles with a fatigued marriage to Rose (Viola Davis), a strained relationship with his son (Jovan Adepo) and the crippling weight of past disappointments. Washington steps behind the camera for the first time since 2007’s The Great Debaters and racks up 4 Oscar nominations for his troubles. Nominated for Best Film, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Founder Friday 17th - Thursday 23rd March USA 2016 115 mins Dir: John Lee Hancock

The Fits Friday 17th – Monday 20th March USA 2016 72 mins Dir: Anna Rose Hunter

The Fits is a psychological portrait of 11-year-old Toni - a tomboy assimilating to a tight-knit dance team in Cincinnati’s West End. Enamoured by the power and confidence of this strong community of girls, Toni eagerly absorbs routines, master’s drills, and even pierces her own ears to fit in. When a mysterious outbreak of fainting spells plagues the team, Toni’s desire for acceptance is twisted.

This is the story of Ray Kroc, a salesman who turned two brothers’ innovative fast food eatery McDonalds, into one of the biggest restaurant businesses in the world with a combination of ambition, persistence and ruthlessness. Michael Keaton excels as Kroc alongside Laura Dern, Linda Cardellini, Nick Offerman and John Carroll Lynch play the McDonald brothers. “ The Founder is an absorbing and unexpectedly subtle movie about the genesis of the McDonald’s burger empire. ” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

The Handmaiden

S

Screening in April S Korea 2016 144 mins Dir: Park Chan-wook

Free Fire Friday 31st March – Thursday 13th April UK/USA 2016 91 mins Dir: Ben Wheatley

British director Ben Wheatley has been on a roll for the past few years since his breakout hit Kill List, with smash hits like Sightseers and High-Rise taking the UK box office by storm. He hops over the pond to the states for his latest with this US set, action packed crime thriller about an arms deal gone wrong. Set over the course of one night in 1970s Massachusetts where a group of criminals with a mix of differing agendas clash. Cast includes Oscar winning Room actress Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley and longtime Wheatley collaborator Michael Smiley.

South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook’s (Oldboy, Stoker) erotic psychological thriller adapted from Welsh author Sarah Waters’ historical novel Fingersmith - screened to vast acclaim in Competition at Cannes this year. It relocates Waters’ story from Victorian Britain to 1930s Korea during Japanese colonial rule. New girl Sookee (Kim Tae-ri) is hired as handmaiden to Japanese heiress Lady Hideko (Kim Min-hee), who lives a secluded life on a large countryside estate with her domineering Uncle Kouzuki (Cho Jin-woong). But Sookee has a secret: she has been recruited by a swindler posing as a Japanese nobleman to carry out a devilish plan of robbery, seduction and imprisonment which seems set to succeed - until Sookee and Lady Hideko fall prey to unexpected emotions. This is wildly entertaining, consummate filmmaking from Chan-wook.

The pleasantly surprising success of Hidden Figures at the US Box Office and 3 Oscar nominations for Best Film, Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer and Best Adapted Screenplay, is richly deserved in this inspiring true story.

It’s Only The End Of The World (Juste La Fin Du Monde) S Tuesday 21st – Thursday 23rd March Canada / France 2016 99 mins Dir: Xavier Dolan

Canadian enfant terrible Xavier Dolan’s It’s Only the End of the World - winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes boasts a fantastic ensemble cast, evidencing a growing casting clout. Gaspard Ulliel plays Louis, a writer; Nathalie Baye his whimsical mother; Léa Seydoux his sullen, punky sister; Vincent Cassel his volatile brother Antoine and Marion Cotillard, Antoine’s diminutive wife Catherine. The story follows Louis as he returns to the troubled family home with an awful secret to share. Their reunion is something like a volcanic eruption, as Dolan exploits (much as he did in Mommy) the dramatic power and claustrophobic nature of dysfunctional familial love, and the difficulty - perhaps, impossibility - of maintaining such toxic relationships.

Lost In France Friday 17th – Monday 20th March (ex Sat 18th) UK 2016 100 mins Dir: Niall McCann

This documentary explores the rise of Scotland’s independent music scene in the ‘90s, led by cult label Chemikal Underground. Featuring Mogwai, The Delgados, Bis, Arab Strap and Franz Ferdinand, this film follows the friendships, the creativity and, most importantly, the music. Here the bands take a trip revisiting a defining tour to Brittany, reuniting many in life (and on stage) for the first time in years.

Mad To Be Normal Friday 7th – Thursday 13th April UK 2017 106 mins Dir: Robert Mullan

Lost City Of Z Friday 24th March – Thursday 6th April USA 2016 141 mins Dir: James Gray

Based on author David Granns non-fiction bestseller, The Lost City Of Z tells the incredible true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett, who journeys into the Amazon at the dawn of the 20th century and discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region. Despite ridicule, the determined Fawcett supported by his devoted wife (Sienna Miller), son (Tom Holland) and aide de camp (Robert Pattinson) returns time and again to the beloved jungle, attempting to prove his case, ultimately resulting in his mysterious disappearance in 1925. A stirring tribute to the exploratory spirit and those individuals driven to achieve greatness at all costs.

This film tells the true story of charismatic and controversial figure R D Laing, famed in the swinging sixties as the ‘high priest of anti-psychiatry’. Laing, in 1965 established Kingsley Hall in East London as a medication-free community for those seriously affected by schizophrenia. His methods, which involved experimenting with LSD on his patients and practicing a form of self-healing known as metanoia, flew in the face of a medical establishment that considered Laing a dangerous radical. Mad To Be Normal features a powerful performance of nuance and complexity that attempts to get under the skin of a compelling figure. With Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men), Michael Gambon and Gabriel Byrne.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest Screening in April USA 1975 134 mins Dir: Milos Forman

Oscar Nominated

Moonlight Wednesday 1st – Thursday 9th March USA 2016 111 mins Dir: Barry Jenkins

A timeless story of human connection and self-discovery, Moonlight chronicles the life of a young black man Chiron, from childhood to adulthood as he tries to find his place in the world, questions his own sexuality and grows up in a rough neighbourhood of Miami. With a masterfully subtle performance from Mahershala Ali as local drug dealer and surrogate father of sorts, plus great performances from Naomie Harris, Janelle Monae, Andre Holland and Trevante Rhodes as the adult Chiron. Nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Film, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Original Score. “ Writer/director Barry Jenkins’ bold and uniquely told film about the struggles to accept one’s own sexuality is both heartbreaking and deeply relevant. ” The Guardian

Adapted from Ken Kesey’s novel, the film centres on Randle McMurphy (Jack Nicholson), a convict who simulates mental illness in the hope that a transfer to a psychiatric hospital might ensure an early release. Inspired casting (Danny DeVito, Brad Dourif and Christopher Lloyd are among the patients) and Forman’s naturalistic direction lend authenticity to the proceedings, so that the film succeeds both as an anti-authoritarian parable and as an affecting reminder of the psychiatric practises of the past. Winner of 5 Oscars in 1976 for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Mullholland Drive Screening in April USA 2001 147 mins Dir: David Lynch

Naomi Watts (Birdman) gives a career making performance as aspiring actress Betty, who after arriving in Hollywood, befriends an amnesiac woman (Laura Harring) and tries to help her recover her memory. Once established, the film proceeds to subvert any certainty about them, instead offering a swirling atmosphere of increasing surrealism. As twisting and turning as the Hollywood road it takes its name from, this is a story about Hollywood – what it is and how it operates, its powers of myth, illusion and delusion – these ideas and many others swarm out for this cryptic, seductive and disruptive film: a monumental classic by one of the masters of contemporary cinema. David Lynch’s quintessential neo-noir is back on the big screen in a new 4k digital transfer supervised by the director himself.

Personal Shopper Friday 31st March – Thursday 6th April France/Germany 2016 105 mins Dir: Olivier Assayas

Maureen (Kirsten Stewart) is a young American woman in Paris, making her living as a personal shopper for a media celebrity and feeling conflicted about being drawn into the glamourous world of contemporary fashion. Whilst mourning the death of her twin brother, Maureen starts to receive ambiguous messages from an unknown source, prompting the belief that she may have the psychic ability to communicate with spirits, an unusual talent possessed by her recently deceased sibling. Director Olivier Assayas follows the success of Clouds OF Sils Maria with this unconventional ghost story.

A Quiet Passion

Spaceship

Screening in April UK/USA 2016 125 mins Dir: Terence Davies

Screening in April UK 2016 86 mins Dir: Alex Taylor

Terence Davies (Of Time and the City) brings this controlled, spirited and refreshingly funny biopic of 19th century American poet Emily Dickinson to the screen, with a taut central performance by Cynthia Nixon. Dickinson’s life - appropriate to her poetry - was one of great interiority: she was born and died in Amherst, Massachusetts, never married and lived a reclusive existence while writing some of the most piercingly beautiful, directly emotional and innovative verse ever published. But Davies works hard to show her as a passionate and conflicted figure who continually questioned the patriarchal society in which she lived.

First time British director Alex Taylor unleashes his day-glow examination of teen ennui in the affluent Surrey commuter belt. Alexa Davies shines as the ethereal Lucidia, who spends her days with her misfit community of cyber goths. When she is seemingly abducted by aliens, her Metal loving Finnish father must search for her among the strange world she inhabited. For fans of Harmony Korine (Gummo) and Gregg Araki (Nowhere), this is a bold debut feature.

The Time Of Their Lives Friday 10th – Thursday 23rd March UK 2017 Dir: Roger Goldby

Determined to gate crash her ex-lover’s funeral at a glamourous French hideaway, former Hollywood siren Helen (Joan Collins) escapes her London retirement home with the help of Priscilla (Pauline Collins), a repressed English housewife stuck in a bad marriage. Pooling their resources, they hit the road together travelling by coach, ferry, car and two feet in a race to get to the funeral in time. With Sian Reeves, Joely Richardson and Franco Nero as a reclusive French millionaire.

Their Finest Screening from Friday 21st April UK 2016 117 mins Dir: Lone Scherfig

The Salesman

S

Screening in March / April Iran 2016 143 mins Dir: Asghar Farhadi

Celebrated Iranian auteur Asghar Farhadi returns to similar territory that he explored in the acclaimed A Separation (2011) and The Past (2013), examining the strained relationship between a middle class married couple, Rana and Emad. Emad is a teacher and Rana his stay-at-home wife. In their spare time, they’re also part of a theatre group working on a stage production of Arthur Miller’s Death Of A Salesman in which they play the central roles. Exploring challenging questions of morality and retribution, The Salesman is beautifully observed, painstakingly crafted and won Best Actor and Best Screenplay at Cannes this past year.

Packed with shrewd wit with a lot of heart, this is the charming, nostalgic, spirited wartime drama that the British film industry has been waiting for. Gemma Arterton stars as Catrin, a talented young copy-writer enticed to London from Wales by her self-absorbed husband (Jack Huston). She gets a job as a script editor with the Ministry Of Information, where she’s hired to write convincing women’s dialogue for morale boosting propaganda. She’s drafted to work with a colourful crew, including an ageing star (Bill Nighy) struggling to come to terms with the fact his romantic lead days are behind him, to produce the cinematic stories the nation needs during the dark times of the Blitz. With Richard E Grant, Eddie Marsan, Helen McCrory and Jeremy Irons.

Trespass Against Us Sunday 26th – Thursday 30th March UK 2016 99 mins Dir: Adam Smith

A car full to the brim with men and kids hurtles across a field in pursuit of a speeding hare. This is the Cutler brood, a gang of thieves with a thing for fast motors. Pa (a glowering Brendan Gleeson) may be the king of the caravan-dwelling clan, but his heir Chad (Michael Fassbender on sparkling form) now has a family of his own and is torn between two life paths: the outlaw way, where his tightly-honed criminal skills are valued, and something else that might offer a different set of opportunities for his kids. Meanwhile, the cops (led by a weasly Rory Kinnear) are closing in. The Chemical Brothers provide the fresh and adrenalised soundtrack.

Sunday 12th – Tuesday 14th March USA 1958 117 mins Dir: Richard Fleischer

Sunday 16th & Monday 17th April USA 1956 218 mins Dir: Cecil B. DeMille

An epic chronicle of brutal rivalry and bloodthirsty ambition. Bitter hatred divides two brothers, Prince Einar (Kirk Douglas) is the son and heir of a savage Viking chieftain. Prince Eric (Tony Curtis) is his unknowing half-brother, the bastard offspring of Einar’s father and an English queen. When the Vikings kidnap a princess (Janet Leigh), her beauty inflames the desires of both men, forcing a bloody duel that decides their fate and the future of the English throne. Directed by Richard Fleischer (10 Rillington Place, Tora! Tora! Tora!) and narrated by Orson Welles.

The Ten Commandments is one of the handful of films that the term Epic was created for (at least in cinema terms). Director Cecil B. DeMille remakes his own 1923 silent film with this bells and whistles production, shot on location in Egypt and Mount Sinai as wells featuring some of the largest sets ever created for film. The film tells the Biblical story of Moses (Charlton Heston), an enslaved Hebrew who leads his people out of Egypt and back to the promised land. With Yul Brynner, Anne Baxter, Edward G Robinson, Yvonne De Carlo and an early role for Vincent Price.

Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars + 30 minute exclusive documentary Tuesday 7th March at 8:45pm

Directed by pioneering rock film-maker D.A. Pennebaker, this documentary and concert film captures Bowie and his band, The Spiders From Mars, performing at London’s Hammersmith Odeon on 3rd July, 1973. It was at this now-infamous concert that Bowie made a sudden announcement, shocking fans and media alike by stating “it’s the last show we’ll ever do”. Rather than marking his withdrawal from music, his declaration signalled the retirement of the Ziggy Stardust persona, and the end of a hugely influential chapter in Bowie’s own story. In addition to the concert movie, the evening will include a new film produced by MOJO magazine exclusively for these screenings. From 7:00pm in the QUAD Café/Bar, we will be spinning some of the best Bowie tracks to get you in the mood for the screening. Tickets: £13, £11 Concessions & £10 QUAD Members Every attendee will receive a copy of the MOJO magazine which will fully document the Ziggy-era, and which will also feature an exclusive souvenir cover.

An exhibition in response to the FORMAT17 theme of HABITAT, curated by Hester Keijser and Louise Clements that presents artists who encourage the viewer to speculate about futures imagined on a global scale, as they are brought about by the technologically induced changes in our planet’s biosphere on an epochal level. In particular, it focuses on how the selected artists reimagine the ways that we inhabit the physical world, using diverse approaches to tell their stories. The artworks range from Ester Vonplon’s layered and intricately composed requiem for the melting glaciers in her native Switzerland, to Lida Adbul’s monumental video installation What we have overlooked, in which she returns to her homeland of Afghanistan to ask how the individual can deal with memories of a country so marked by war and tragedy. Other works included are by Ursula Biemann, Sohrab Hura, Sadie Wechsler, Hannah Darabi and more. All of the artists look at the extraordinary interconnected nature of the human spirit and the habitat that it encounters or creates. Be Here, Now Daniel Regan & Antonia Attwood 24th March – 23rd April 2017, Riverlights, Morledge, Derby

Premiering during FORMAT17, artists Daniel Regan & Antonia Attwood explore the soothing qualities of natural spaces in this immersive exhibition combining virtual reality, video, photography and sound through a series of installations. The artists — both working in the field of mental health and well-being — have responded to the theme of HABITAT by examining how various landscapes can be used to create calm spaces, offer safety and provide respite in today’s fast moving world. From the late summer both artists were in residence at QUAD and began with a research period into what constitutes a safe space by asking strangers to anonymously contribute their own thoughts. Overwhelmingly the greatest amount of responses involved being amongst nature: the sounds of the sea and water; being amongst forests and in open fields; the therapeutic act of walking or simply curling up by the warmth of a fire. In Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs ‘security’ is cited as one of the fundamental human needs, required before humans can move on to secondary or higher level needs. The artists’ intrigue into how we feel safe or soothed took them on various journeys into the landscape recording the sights, sounds and light across England. The resulting exhibition is the culmination of these journeys, physically constructed into individual thematic rooms designed for positive well-being. Viewers are invited to immerse themselves into the senses of the land and switch off from the frenetic pace of modern life. Regan & Attwood were selected as result of an open call to create new works for QUAD and D-Lab in partnership with LEVEL and Junction Arts, funded by INSIDE - a Disability Arts commissioning programme led by DASH with funding from Arts Council England. New Virtual Reality works have been realised due to generous funding from Art Council England Grants for the Arts.

GLUTEN FREE OPTIONS QUAD have always catered for our customers with gluten intolerances by producing our own home made meals, this of course has been limited due to space and time it takes to produce gluten free products without the risk of any cross contamination. But thanks to the development in gluten free products by the suppliers that QUAD now use, we are able to offer some great tasting meals, for example pizza and pasta dishes. You won’t taste the difference if you hadn’t been told! Please just ask Café bar staff for Gluten-free options when ordering.
