Welcome to QUAD’s brochure for May & June

Festivals are a way for us to showcase and inspire through art and film and each of our festivals provides opportunities for both fun and life changing experiences. Some of my most formative experiences have occurred at festivals and I have heard numerous accounts from individuals who attended Summer Nights, FORMAT, Derby Book Festival and Derby Film Festival who also attest to this. If I had one piece of advice of how to make the most of these festivals it is simply ‘take a chance of something new’. QUAD is proud to be part of the UK’s creative industries which contributes over £10m an hour to the UK economy, and our role in this development has increased with the launch of ‘Mainframe’ a new network to develop Derby’s Digital and Creative Economy. The Mainframe project has been created and will be run by QUAD, working with partners across D2N2 to provide targeted support for these industries to ensure both growth in the sector and greater recognition for the fantastic talent in the region.

Derby Film Festival will be bringing you a programme featuring special guests, film premieres and previews. The festival will be visiting some of Derby's cultural venues for some fantastic and not to be missed one-off events. In addition to this there will be a retrospective film strand based around the theme of Habitat and Fantastiq festival returns once more to bring you the very best of all things science fiction, fantasy and horror.

Each year Derby Film Festival invites international film-makers to submit their films and picks the cream of the crop for screening at the festival. This year’s selection includes moving Irish drama Soulsmith, dreamlike chiller Lilith’s Awakening and riotous comedies Diani And Devine Meet The Apocalypse and End Of Days, Inc.

Nottingham born actor Michael Jayston joins us to discuss his long career in film and television which has included playing roles as diverse as Macbeth, Charles Dickens, Shylock and Tsar Nicholas appearances in classic TV shows including Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Doctor Who.

Over the past 40 years David Lynch has been the world’s premier purveyor of surreal dreamlike films which marry fractured narratives to gorgeous visuals and powerful performances. Films including Erasorhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart and Mulholland Drive have all made a lasting impact on the cultural landscape, and his television series Twin Peaks is perhaps the greatest cult show of all time. Exploring the rise of Graffiti and Street Art. Before artists like Banksy and Shepard Fairey became recognized names, there were the graffiti pioneers. Narrated by John Waters, Wall Writers features unprecedented access to TAKI183, CORNBREAD, and other legendary writers and features archive footage from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, a time when underprivileged city kids refused to remain in the shadows.

Alan J.W. Bell In Conversation Saturday 29th April at 3:00pm

Director and producer Alan J.W. Bell began his long career at the BBC as an assistant before graduating to an editing position and then on to producing and directing. His debut as a director came on two episodes of Michael Palin’s much loved Ripping Yarns and he followed it up with a challenging assignment as producer and director of the television version of Douglas Adams’ Hitch Hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, a challenge he rose to with great success, producing a memorable and extremely funny combination of live action and animation on an extremely tight budget. We are delighted to welcome Alan to Fantastiq for an on-stage discussion of his work on the series and he will also be signing copies of his new book A Hitch in the Galaxy: The Making Of A Legend.

Delivered by The Lost Boys, this offers a fun exploration of the history of slapstick, drawing together the many strands of knockabout comedy tracing its roots from the beginnings in primitive ritual through Commedia dell’ Arte and onto the aforementioned legends of film and television. A Tribute To Sir John Hurt

Producer and director Leslie Megahey was born in Belfast in 1944 and began his career in factual programming for the BBC producing documentaries on subjects as diverse as Van Gogh, Tolkein and Crime fiction. In 1979 he was offered the chance to become editor of the BBC’s flagship arts documentary series Omnibus, an offer he accepted on condition that he be given the go ahead to make the fiction film Schalcken The Painter which won acclaim when aired at Christmas that year. In the years since his career has taken in a diverse range of productions, including a documentary on Orson Welles, an adaptation of the opera Bluebeard’s Castle and the feature film The Hour Of The Pig.

Sir John Hurt was Patron of QUAD since our opening in 2008. Having lived in Derbyshire in his formative years, Sir John had his first cinema visit in Derby and his support for QUAD was unflinching and rooted in a desire to ensure that everyone in the city had the chance to experience inspiring cinema and film events. We wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate his stellar career and are delighted to welcome film critic and writer Danny Leigh (BBC, Guardian) to give an illustrated talk about the key highlights of Sir John’s film career followed by a screening of The Elephant Man. Alongside this we will officially rename Cinema 1 as the Sir John Hurt Cinema. Tickets: £10, £9 Concessions

Ryota (Hiroshi Abe), a former prize-winning author, went off the rails and now makes his living as a private detective. When a storm traps the family in Ryota’s mother’s home for a night he sees the chance take back control of his existence and become a meaningful presence in the life of his son. With previous films Still Walking, Like Father, Like Son and Our Little Sister Hirokazu Koreeda has become the great modern chronicler of Japanese family life.

Thanks to their sweary rants about modern England, Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods have been called “the angriest band in Britain”. At 44, former chicken factory worker and father of two, Jason Williamson, his band mate, beatmaker Andrew Fearn, and their manager Steve Underwood, bus driver and avant garde bedroom label owner, have won over fans with their brutally honest lyrics and DIY ethos. Bunch of Kunst tells the story of three guys taking on the music business on their own terms. “Young people are signing major record deals and they just sing about love. I’m a great believer in love. But for ****’s sake, there’s a lot going on! Who wants to hear that if you are on 15 pounds a week? Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland (Lore, Somersault) follows up the success of her first two films with an adaptation of Melanie Joosten’s novel. While on holiday in Berlin, photojournalist Clare (Teresa Palmer) embarks on a passionate holiday romance with charismatic local man Andi (Max Riemelt). But their affair suddenly changes pace when she wakes up to find Andi has locked her in his apartment and has no intention of letting her leave. A rich, subtle and insightful psychological thriller.

The third programme from Britain On Film on Tour explores the vital history of black Britain throughout the 20th Century. Bringing together films spanning 1901 to 1985 and taken from many different regions of the UK, it offers incredibly rare, little seen and valuable depictions of black British life on screen. Revealing new voices from across a century of vast and turbulent social change in the UK, this collection is not just an important educational tool – offering audiences the chance to explore stories of migration, community and the struggle against inequality – but also an opportunity to celebrate vivid black British life and culture on screen. Films included feature miners in the collieries of Edwardian Lancashire and Yorkshire; soldiers from the Empire fighting for King and ‘mother country’ in World War 1; rare colour footage of multi-racial Cardiff in 1964; touching interviews with black school leavers in 1965; growing racial tensions on a Liverpool housing estate; communities from New Cross, London in search of their roots and partying on the streets of Notting Hill during Carnival.

David Lynch: The Art Life USA/Denmark 2016 90 mins Dir: Jon Nguyen & Rick Barnes

Ahead of the new Twin Peaks series hitting the screens, this film offers an intimate portrayal of David Lynch. Narrated by Lynch himself – speaking from a vintage microphone from his painting studio in the Hollywood Hills – the film takes us on a journey through his youth. Covering his idyllic childhood in small-town America, his awkward teens and his time living the ‘art life’ in the dark streets of Philadelphia, he recounts stories of his family, his anxieties and fears, revealing the formative personal experiences that inspired both his visual and cinematic art. Combining home movies and footage of Lynch painting and sculpting alongside his musings; with camerawork and a score that reflects its subject’s aesthetic, this is an immersive and compelling portrait of an artist at work – as well as one of our most celebrated and unpredictable film-makers.

The Handmaiden

S Korea 2016 156 mins Dir: Park Chan-wook

Never one to play it safe, François Ozon (8 Women, The New Girlfriend) resists labelling yet again with this striking adaptation, or rather reimagining of Ernest Lubitsch’s lesser known drama – Broken Lullaby (1932). Largely black and white, Frantz takes place in 1919, when a young woman Anna (Paula Beer) discovers the mysterious Adrien (Pierre Niney) laying flowers at her eponymous fiance’s grave in a small German town. Adrien claims to be Frantz’s friend from his student days before the war. Anna introduces him to her family who are resistant, with the war still fresh. Ozon switches from the source material shifting the perspective from Adrien to Anna. It is here we find ourselves in Ozon territory, exploring themes of alienation, grief and adding newcomer Paula Beer to a long line of talented women that lead his films.

South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook’s (Oldboy, Stoker) erotic psychological thriller - adapted from Welsh author Sarah Waters’ historical novel ‘Fingersmith’ screened to vast acclaim in Competition at Cannes last year. It relocates Waters’ story from Victorian Britain to 1930s Korea during Japanese colonial rule. New girl Sookee (Kim Tae-ri) is hired as handmaiden to Japanese heiress Lady Hideko (Kim Min-hee), who lives a secluded life on a large countryside estate with her domineering Uncle Kouzuki (Cho Jin-woong). But Sookee has a secret: she has been recruited by a swindler posing as a Japanese nobleman to carry out a devilish plan of robbery, seduction and imprisonment which seems set to succeed – until she falls prey to unexpected emotions.

Churchill tells the story of the 48 hours before the 1944 D-Day landings. Allied Forces stand on the brink with a massive army secretly assembled on Britain’s south coast, poised to re-take Nazi-occupied Europe but waiting for Churchill’s potentially triumphant – or utterly disastrous – OK. Brian Cox tackles the role of Churchill, a man of rousing speeches and a background of military failures, as he weighs the pros and cons of sending so many troops onto the beaches. With Miranda Richardson as Churchill’s wife Clementine, John Slattery as Eisenhower, James Purefoy as King George VI and Ella Purnell as Churchill’s young secretary.

France/Germany 2016 114 mins Dir: François Ozon

Hampstead UK 2017 102 mins Dir: Joel Hopkins

Diane Keaton and Brendan Gleeson find unexpected love among the long grass on North London’s famed Hampstead Heath. Keaton plays an American widow who forms an unlikely alliance with Gleeson, who has been living on the outskirts of the woods for years, as they battle property developers using heavy handed tactics to get their own way. The film also starts Leslie Manville, Simon Callow, James Norton and Jason Watkins.

Set in Finland 1962, this true story follows Finnish boxer Olli Maki as he builds up to a world featherweight championship match. Side-stepping the traditional formula of boxing movies, Olli Maki blends humour, melancholy and wonderful nuanced character study to tell it’s tale. Shot in black and white, echoing Raging Bull, the film follows country baker Maki as he is groomed to be Finland’s next national hero despite only having 10 pro fights - to fight experienced undefeated US champion Davy Moore.

A thrilling 19th Century tragedy and one of the most exciting discoveries of this year’s London Film Festival, British director William Oldroyd’s exceptional debut stars the luminous Florence Pugh as a defiant, passionate young woman struggling against societal norms. Adapted from Nikolai Leskov’s 1865 novella ‘Lady Macbeth of Mitsensk District’ and transposed to rural England, it follows young bride Katherine (Florence Pugh), trapped in a loveless marriage to a much older man and browbeaten by her sadistic husband’s family. But when she embarks on a passionate affair with a young worker on their estate, a new force is unleashed in her; so powerful that she will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

Sweden’s smash hit and Academy Award nominated film, Hannes Holm’s A Man Called Ove is an irresistible adaptation of Fredrik Backman’s best-selling novel. Ove (Rolf Lassgard) is the quintessential angry old man next door. An isolated retiree with strict principles and a short fuse, who spends his days enforcing housing association rules that only he cares about and visiting his wife’s grave, Ove has given up on life. But when pregnant Parvaneh (Bahar Pars) and her young family move next door, his solitary, regimented world is shaken in ways he would never have imagined, and from inauspicious beginnings an unlikely friendship forms. What emerges is a heartwarming tale of unreliable first impressions and the gentle reminder that life is sweeter when it’s shared.

In a return to the fertile ground he covered in Annie Hall. Allen plays Isaac, a 42-year television writer who’s paying two alimonies and dating a teenager (Mariel Hemmingway), while his second ex-wife, lesbian Jill (Meryl Streep) is writing a tell all book about their marriage. His life can get any more complicated then he meets Mary (Diane Keaton). By turns a rhapsodic city symphony and an astute character study, Manhattan is presented in a new 4k Restored Digital print.

Jessica Chastain takes on the eponymous role in John Madden’s (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) new thriller. Chastain plays Miss Sloane, the high-powered lobbyist in Washington DC. However, the cost of the fight may be too high a price to pay when she comes up against the equally powerful gun lobby.

UK/USA 2017 Dir: Roger Michell

In this new adaptation of the Daphne du Maurier gothic mystery novel a young man named Philip (Sam Claflin) inherits a Cornish estate from his guardian. There he finds himself drawn to the title character, played by Oscar winner Rachel Weisz, but his feelings become extremely complicated when evidence arises which suggests she may have killed his guardian and be planning a similar fate for Philip himself. An unusually tense costume drama. From the Director of Enduring Love and Le Week-end.

This fascinating documentary explores the life of extraordinary English writer, archaeologist, diplomat and spy Gertrude Bell. As a young woman, she travelled extensively throughout the Middle East, from Palestine to Syria to Iraq (then Mesopotamia), producing maps and scholarly works and becoming fluent in Arabic and Persian. She wielded significant power in British Imperial policy across the Middle East – the only woman to do so – working closely with tribal Arabs to help soldiers move across the desert during World War I. Openly critical of colonialism, the film shows how her work offered a counterpoint to typical British all-male colonial power, and that her ideas about the future of the region were in many cases stunningly prescient. A rich tapestry of archive footage alongside letters, spoken aloud by Tilda Swinton, and testimony from Bell’s peers including T E Lawrence and Vita Sackville-West.

My Cousin Rachel

Washed-up actor Richard Thorncroft (The Mighty Boosh’s Julian Barret) has fallen a long way since his career peak in the late ‘80s playing ‘Mindhorn’, a detective with a robotic eye which can “see the truth”. Having failed to make it in Hollywood he has now been reduced to battling John Nettles for jobs on adverts for orthopaedic socks. But when a madman (Russell Tovey) begins a crime spree on The Isle Of Man and insists to the police that he will only deal with Mindhorn, Richard spots an opportunity to reignite his career. A fantastic comedy featuring a host of familiar British actors embracing the absurdity of the concept, including Steve Coogan, Kenneth Branagh, Andrea Riseborough, Harriet Walter and Simon Callow.

Naomi Watts (Birdman) gives a career making performance as aspiring actress Betty, who after arriving in Hollywood, befriends an amnesiac woman (Laura Harring) and tries to help her recover her memory. Once established, the film proceeds to subvert any certainty about them, instead offering a swirling atmosphere of increasing surrealism. As twisting and turning as the Hollywood road it takes its name from, this is a story about Hollywood – what it is and how it operates, its powers of myth, illusion and delusion. A monumental classic by one of the masters of contemporary cinema. David Lynch’s quintessential neo-noir is back on the big screen in a new 4k digital transfer supervised by the director himself.

My Life As A Courgette S France 2016 66 mins Dir: Claude Barras

Nine year-old Icare is taken to live in a children’s home after the death of his alcoholic mother, something for which he feels a terrible guilt. Life at the children’s home is initially difficult as the other children are reluctant to accept Icare (who now insists he be called Courgette, his mother’s pet name for him) into their group. Slowly, and with the help of a kindly police officer, Courgette will learn to trust and perhaps find true love in this gorgeous stop-motion animated tale, featuring charming colourful designs that disguise the real emotional weight at its heart. Oscar nominated for Best Animated Film with a screenplay by Girlhood director Celine Sciamma.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest USA 1975 134 mins Dir: Milos Forman

Adapted from Ken Kesey’s novel, the film centres on Randle McMurphy (Jack Nicholson), a convict who simulates mental illness in the hope that a transfer to a psychiatric hospital might ensure an early release. But he hasn’t bargained for the rigid regimen of Nurse Ratched (a superb Louise Fletcher), who dislikes his disruptive – though he would say liberating – effect on the ward. Inspired casting (Danny DeVito, Brad Dourif and Christopher Lloyd are among the patients) and Forman’s naturalistic direction lend authenticity to the proceedings, so that the film succeeds both as an anti-authoritarian parable and as an affecting reminder of the psychiatric practises of the past. Winner of 5 Oscars.

A Quiet Passion UK/USA 2016 125 mins Dir: Terence Davies

Terence Davies (Of Time and the City) brings this controlled, spirited and refreshingly funny biopic of 19th century American poet Emily Dickinson to the screen, with a taut central performance by Cynthia Nixon. Dickinson’s life - appropriate to her poetry - was one of great interiority: she was born and died in Amherst, Massachusetts, never married and lived a reclusive existence while writing some of the most piercingly beautiful, directly emotional and innovative verse ever published. But Davies works hard to show her as a passionate and conflicted figure who continually questioned the patriarchal society in which she lived. He explores her interaction with her family and wider community - including her supportive father (Keith Carradine), her confidante sister Lavinia (Jennifer Ehle); all documented with insight, intellect and bursts of imagination and humour.

Set in 1939, as the Nazis are invading Poland, Antonina (Jessica Chastain) and Jan Zabinski, (Johan Heldenbergh) run the Warsaw Zoo and begin covertly working with the Resistance to action their plan to save hundreds of lives from what has become the Warsaw Ghetto. They utilise their now empty zoo to help rescue Jews right under the noses of the occupying Nazi forces and their commander Lutz (Daniel Bruhl).

The first ‘official’ adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel sees director Tod Browning bring the enigmatic Count Dracula to the screen in the form of the spellbinding Bela Lugosi. A real estate agent travels to the Carpathian mountains for a business meeting with Count Dracula. There he falls under the influence of the client and the pair travel back to England where the Count begins preying on young innocents. All the iconic imagery that we now naturally connect with Dracula were established in this ground breaking film.

Capitalising on the hit Frankenstein, Universal were keen to exploit their new star Boris Karloff casting him in The Old Dark House and as Fu Manchu in The Mask Of Fu Manchu. But it was as the bandaged Mummy Imhotep that Karloff struck gold again. A team of British archaeologists accidentally revive a mummified high priest after 3700 years of unquiet slumber. Alive again, he sets out on an obsessive and deadly quest to find his last love.

Fleeing from a group of enraged villagers seeking revenge for the death of a young girl, Frankenstein’s Monster finds refuge in an old crypt. Covered in bandages and wearing dark glasses, the mysterious Dr Griffin arrives in a small English village and takes a room at the local tavern. Unbeknownst to the villagers, Griffin has created a serum that makes him invisible – he attempts to hide his amazing discovery, but the drug’s side effects slowly drive him to commit acts of terror!

Whilst on a research mission deep in the Amazon, a group of scientists drug and capture a creature from the mysterious Black Lagoon, who becomes enamoured with the head scientist’s female assistant. The creature – an amphibious missing link – escapes and kidnaps the object of his affection, causing his former captors to launch a crusade to rescue their colleague and destroy the monster they have discovered.

Larry Talbot returns to his ancestral home in Wales to console his estranged father after the death of his older brother. Attempting to reconcile with his father and win the heart of a local girl, Larry’s integration into his new community becomes strained when he falls victim to a vicious animal attack and starts to experience unusual symptoms that echo folk legends about werewolves. Arriving in the second wave of Universal Horrors, Lon Chaney Jr continues his father’s work in the genre as the hirsute horror.

Shinya Tsukamoto gained international attention early in 2017 for his performance in Martin Scorsese’s Silence, but has actually been writing, directing and acting in his own films for nearly thirty years, most notably with his cult Tetsuo series. His most recent film is an adaptation of the classic novel by Shohei Ooka which follows a Japanese soldier (played by Tsukamoto himself) as he confronts illness, starvation and brutality in the Philippines at the close of World War 2. Ahead still lies our future emerged out of scanning the endless tapestry of photography and lens-based arts, for radio frequencies emitted from the future, barely audible sounds of hope that signal a new era beyond the capitalocene. What is needed at this junction is not mere imagery, pictures from the here and now, but images that ground vision anew, performed first in the work of the artists, and reflected on by the viewer in that most mysterious space that precedes words. Perhaps then we can transcend our bewildering incapacity to imagine a way to move forward, together.

FORMAT International Photography Festival

Ahead still lies our future addresses the theme of Habitat from a position of hope. The new geological epoch that our actions have caused, is threatening the very sphere that is the precondition for our existence as a species. From the confrontation with our extinction is also growing an awareness of our unbreakable bond with nature as a living, sentient being, and of our collective responsibility for it. Right now the human race, which is transgressive in essence, is learning how to learn to act together, to create a new vision of what future can be like, should be like.

Ahead still lies our future and FORMAT Open Call exhibitions were part of FORMAT17 that took place in venues across Derby from 24 March– 23 April 2017. The festival, established in 2004, is now the UK’s largest international biennale of contemporary photography. The 2015 festival welcomed over 100,000 visitors from all over the world and the festival in 2017 engaged even more, and was curated around the theme of HABITAT.

The universe does not care if we live or die, if our planet lives or dies. But in the brief moment of our existence as living beings, we should not forget that the universe sees itself through our eyes. In us, through us, the universe becomes self-conscious. In our gazing at the stars, the stars gaze at themselves. That is not a ground for declaring ourselves superior life forms, it is not ground for arrogance. It ought to be a ground for joy, surprise, relish, celebration and wonder, even when life on earth can confront us with unsufferable hardships.

Guest speakers include: Marc Luders, John Hilliard, Astrid Honold, Catherine M. Weir, Duncan Wooldridge, Stephanie Rushton, Dario Srbic and James Faure Walker. The PaintingDigitalPhotography conference seeks to investigate how artists and theorists are currently engaged in critical discourses around the shifting relationships of painting, photography, and digital manipulation. How are these mediums being defined in their connection to one another as new hybrid forms are being created through their combination? What do these combinations tell us about these mediums and disciplines, their natures and practices, in the digital age?

Central to the debate will be the focus on the blurred boundaries, common threads, antagonisms, distinctions, and growing interrelationship between painting, photography, and ‘the digital’ in the development of new creative practices. Back by popular demand, this five-week course is ideal if you have recently purchased, are going to purchase or want to learn more about your digital SLR camera. It is suitable for people who have only used the ‘Auto’ mode and are uncertain about the other camera functions. Designed to demystify the features and characteristics of these cameras in an interesting and accessible way, the course, with tutor Jon Legge, will feature talks, ‘hands-on’ workshops, demonstrations and group activities. By the end of the course you will have the confidence to use the camera in a more creative way, and have a basic understanding of light, composition and colour. The app guides you through the streets of Derby to uncover hidden stories from WW1 involving the city and its residents. Following the digital trail, you will automatically unlock archive photographs, video, monuments and audio that tell the stories of Derby’s role in WW1. The digital tour can be downloaded by following instructions at the start of the trail at Derby Silk Mill, where you will also find a printed version of the trail.

Multimedia performance based on Dave McKean’s haunting new graphic novel about conflict, loyalty and creativity in war. The annual Five/24 24hr film challenge pits creativity against the clock. Entrants will make a 3 minute short in just twenty four hours, over Saturday 29th April – Sunday 30th April.

There is a Sound PlusTM Infrared Listening system in the Cinemas, and an Integrated Loop system in the QUAD Box Office, The Box, Digital Suite, Meeting Room and QUAD Café Bar.
