Welcome to QUAD’s brochure for July & August QUAD’s position as a leading digital organisation has been further clarified by two things which we’d like to draw your attention to this issue. Mainframe, which is the name of a new project which was set up by QUAD to help Derby’s Digital economy thanks to over £300,000 of funding from the European Union and Arts Council England. Some of you may be familiar with the work of our digital and technical team in QUAD, collectively known as TECHS:QUAD, whose work includes Summer Nights Film Festival, Derby Remembers Digital trail, install and technical support for all QUAD & FORMAT exhibitions as well as external projects involving projection mapping, 3D imaging, augmented reality and more. A little bit of news, following on from Derby Film Festival you may have already spotted that we have re-named QUAD’s Cinema One to the Sir John Hurt Cinema. Sir John’s widow, Anwen has confirmed she will become a Patron of Derby Film Festival. We’d like to welcome our new QUAD Chair Professor Judith Lamie, Vice Chancellor at The University Of Derby, who will bring her considerable experience of forming powerful partnerships through past work and her current role as Head of external relations at the University of Derby. Finally we would like to remind customers of Plus One the fundraising scheme supported by Derby’s Arts organisations for young people in care, care leavers and their foster families to take part in cultural opportunities across Derby City. Three years after it was originally set up, this award-winning scheme is still going strong. If you can’t come to our fundraising event in July please buy a ‘Plus One’ ticket next time you’re in QUAD and help a young person in care and care leavers to enjoy the chance of a cultural experience. OUTDOOR FILM SCREENINGS AT DERBY RUGBY CLUB, DARLEY ABBEY Dirty Dancing Friday 25th August at 8:40pm

Drama, music and romance are the order of the day in Dirty Dancing as Frances “Baby” Houseman spends summer in a holiday camp and falls in love with dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze). Celebrating its 30th Anniversary, the classic coming-of-age film will be followed by spectacular fireworks.

The Goonies Saturday 26th August at 8:40pm

‘80s family movie The Goonies follows a gang of misfit kids as they stumble upon a treasure map and head off on an adventure. Both screenings take place at Derby Rugby Club, on Haslams Lane in Darley Abbey, Derby. Doors will be open from 6:30pm both evenings and the estimated start time is approximately 30 minutes after sunset. There will be free parking and refreshments available on site.

Tickets for Dirty Dancing: 30th Anniversary Celebration are £18 (including fireworks). Tickets for The Goonies are £13 adults & £9 for under 12s. Tickets for those aged under 5 years are free. Tickets are available from QUAD Box Office or online: derbyquad.co.uk

Alone In Berlin Saturday 1st – Thursday 13th July UK/France/Germany 2016 103 mins Dir: Vincent Perez

Based on the best-selling novel by Hans Fallada, actor Vincent Perez steps behind the camera for the first time since 2007 to direct Daniel Bruhl, Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson in this gripping WWII drama. When a working-class couple receive the news that their only son has been killed they decide to resist Hitler and the Nazis. They start writing postcards urging people to stand up against the regime. As the postcards spread throughout Berlin, Gestapo inspector Escherich (Bruhl) is charged with finding their source.

The Beguiled From Friday 14th July USA 2017 94 mins Dir: Sofia Coppola

Sofia Coppola returns to film-making for the first time since 2013’s The Bling Ring with an offering based on the novel by Thomas Culinan, already filmed in 1971 starring Clint Eastwood. The story follows the residents of a Southern girl’s boarding school during the American Civil War. The sheltered women take in an injured enemy soldier, provide refuge and tend to his wounds. The house is taken over with sexual tension and dangerous rivalries, and taboos are broken in an unexpected turn of events. The all-star cast features Kirsten Dunst, Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning, Angourie Rice (The Other Guys), Oona Laurence (Pete’s Dragon) and Colin Farrell as the wounded Union soldier.Winner of Best Director prize at Cannes.

Baby Driver UK/USA 2017 113 mins Dir: Edgar Wright

Channelling Walter Hill, Quentin Tarantino and a running time packed full of tunes, this is a heist movie full of inspired ideas. Baby (The Fault In Their Stars’ Ansel Elgort) is the genius getaway driver of a bank robbing team that consists of Jon Hamm, Jon Bernthal and Eliza Gonzalez. Baby meets Debora (Lily James), needs money for a new life and decides to go straight…after One Last Job. This final job is complicated by the inclusion of loose cannon Bats (Jamie Foxx) and Baby finally having something to lose. Wright infuses this story with such verve and energy that the film is a riot from start to finish.

Dunkirk From Friday 21st July USA 2017 Dir: Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan returns to the big screen after 2014’s Interstellar with another epic, this time set during one of the key moments of World War II. During the early days of the war, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were evacuated using every naval and civilian vessel that could be mustered. A key moment in WWII brought to life by one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. Starring Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Aneurin Barnard, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance and bizarrely, One Direction’s Harry Styles.

The Death Of Louis XIV S France 2016 115 mins Dir: Albert Serra

From his debut as the lead in Francois Truffaut’s The 400 Blows aged just 14, to now aged 72 tackling the role of one of the greatest French kings Louis XIV, French cinema icon Jean-Pierre Leaud brings his strong physical presence to the screen. David Lynch: The Art Life USA/Denmark 2016 90 mins Dir: Jon Nguyen & Rick Barnes

With the return of the new Twin Peaks series, this film offers an intimate portrayal of David Lynch, revealing the formative personal experiences that inspired both his visual and cinematic art. Combining home movies and footage of Lynch painting and sculpting alongside his musings; with camerawork and a score that reflects its subject’s aesthetic, this is an immersive and compelling portrait of an artist at work – as well as one of our most celebrated and unpredictable film-makers.

England Is Mine UK 2017 94 mins Dir: Mark Gill

England Is Mine takes audiences back to 1970s Manchester, where Steven Morrissey (Jack Lowden – Dunkirk, A United Kingdom), an introverted, uncompromising teenager, finds himself frustrated with his working-class existence. With dreams of a successful music career being dampened by his run-of-the-mill job at the local tax office, Steven finds solace in the city’s underground gig scene where he meets Linder Sterling (Jessica Brown Findley, Downton Abbey), an intelligent, self-assured artist – who encourages him to make his ideas of superstardom a reality.

Final Portrait UK 2017 90 mins Dir: Stanley Tucci

Geoffrey Rush stars as the Swiss painter and sculptor Alberto Giacometti in this biopic of the artist’s life. Set over the course of two weeks in 1964, when Giacometti decides to create a portrait of his friend, the American author James Lord (Armie Hammer). Rush spins the role of Giacometti as an obsessive artist who is at once elated, possessed and haunted. Stanley Tucci steps behind the camera for the first time since 2007’s Blind Date and looks to finally capitalise on his remarkable directorial debut Big Night.

This documentary follows the formation and the domination of the West Indies cricket team of the 1970s. Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards, Michael Holding and more revolutionised how the world saw cricket with their record-breaking exploits amidst a world of apartheid in South Africa, race riots in England and civil unrest in the Carribean. We are delighted to welcome West Indies Cricketing legend Michael Holding to QUAD for a post screening Q&A alongside current West Indian cricketeers.

A Ghost Story USA 2017 87 mins Dir: David Lowery

Indie director David Lowery (Aint Them Bodies Saints) left the small-scale roots to direct Pete’s Dragon for Disney, a film that still managed to retain the feel of a more intimate indie film. Here he returns to his roots with this tale of a woman (Rooney Mara) overcome with grief when her partner, played by Oscar winner Casey Affleck, dies in a car crash. Somehow his spirit lives on, underneath a white sheet with eyeholes cut out. A remarkable film that eschews tradition with some great structural innovations and wonderful cinematography that make the most of the 4:3 aspect ratio.

Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman), a recent graduate, collected every possible honour at university, yet the real purpose of his life and the future is an elusive and intangible concept. Easily persuaded into an affair with the predatory Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), things become complicated when his parents insist that he takes her daughter Elaine (Katherine Ross) out on a date. Re-released into cinemas to celebrate its 50th anniversary, Mike Nichols comedy drama has stood the test of time.

Diane Keaton and Brendan Gleeson find unexpected love among the long grass on North London’s famed Hampstead Heath. An Inconvenient Truth 2 USA 2017 100 mins Dir: Bonni Cohen & Jon Shenk

Maudie Ireland/Canada 2017 115 mins Dir: Aisling Walsh

The ever-excellent Sally Hawkins stars alongside Ethan Hawke in Aisling Walsh’s hotly tipped drama, a biopic of Maud Lewis, who despite suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, became one of Canada’s most celebrated outsider artists. Set in Nova Scotia, 1937 - Maud (Sally Hawkins) is living with her unsympathetic aunt until she sees local fish peddler Everett’s (Ethan Hawke) advert for a housekeeper and the two social outcasts together form a bond. But her artistic talents are still largely unrecognised until a visitor from New York commissions a painting from Maud, beginning her career and fame that would eventually see one of her artworks hanging in the White House.

Claire (Catherine Frot) is a wonderfully gifted midwife, but over the years, her delicate ways, her sense of pride and responsibility are clashing with the more efficiency-driven methods of modern hospitals. One day she receives a phone call from Beatrice (Catherine Deneuve), the extravagant and frivolous mistress of her deceased father, who has made her return after disappearing 30 years ago. Exact opposites the two learn to accept each other and by revealing old secrets start to make up for the lost years.

In much lighter territory than her last outing at QUAD, the Oscar nominated Elle, Isabelle Huppert stars as bored paté factory worker Lilliane, whose daily routine involves a monotonous job and an evening alone with a bottle of wine in front of the TV. But she holds a secret that her new young co-worker Jean is slowly figuring out - she was once a contestant on the European Song Contest. Their growing relationship, and his belief that she should mount a comeback, brings her out of the shadow and back into the spotlight.

Osnabrück, July 2, 1937. On this mild summers day, a Friday, 5 people take their leave of Osnabrück. Their destination: Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands. Four of these people have to leave Osnabrück because they are Jewish and no longer feel safe in the city. The fifth, protestant Auguste Minna Thormann, is leaving her home town for the sake of her boyfriend Alfred Gossels. Relationships between Jews and Aryans have been forbidden by law since 1935. Alfred Gossels and Justus Nussbaum run a scrap-car recycling business in Osnabrück. Two of their workers; Wilhelm Hellmeister and Friedrich Niehüser, are helping with the emigration. For all concerned it’s a well-planned escape which has been two long years in preparation. Director Abigail Mathew set off on the trail of her great-grandfather Wilhelm Hellmeister, who played an instrumental part in the escape. Beginning with a photograph taken in 1936, it led to six months of painstaking research, to bring this dramatic story to the screen and shed new light on Nazi-era Osnabruck and the lives of Jewish exiles in Amsterdam.

An iconic slapstick comedy channelling Groucho Marx and Bob Hope, while parodying notable works of science fiction.

Once inside its new home, the cyborg promptly reconstructs the rest of its body using a variety of household utensils and proceeds to go on a murderous rampage. India 2010 170 mins Dir: Shankar

The Frankenstein story is given a make over as brilliant scientist Dr Vaseegaran (Rajnikanth) emerges with his new invention: Chitti, an android created in his own image. When the robot starts to develop emotions, it becomes even more awkward when Chitti falls in love with Dr Vaseegaran’s fiancé (Aishwarya Rai). A rollicking epic with some have-to-be-seen-to-bebelieved action sequences.

USA 1979 91 mins Dir: Gary Nelson

Deep in space, a research craft encounters a near-deserted spaceship perched on the edge of a black hole. On board the ship is a long-lost scientist who has a desire to see what lies on the other side of the black hole – and will stop at nothing to achieve his goal. Anthony Perkins, Maximilian Schell, Yvette Mimieaux and of course V.I.N.CENT and B.O.B.

45 years after Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour filmed ‘Live At Pompeii’ in the legendary Roman Amphitheatre there, he returned for two spectacular shows, part of his year-long tour in support of his album ‘Rattle That Lock’. The performances were the first-ever rock concerts for an audience in the stone Roman amphitheatre, and, for two nights only, the 2,600 strong crowd stood exactly where gladiators would have fought in the first century AD. ‘David Gilmour Live At Pompeii’ is an audio-visual spectacle, featuring lasers, pyrotechnics and a huge circular screen on which specially-created films compliment selected songs, but paramount above all is the astonishing music and stellar performances from an all star band. Our Friends Electric is an exhibition in QUAD Gallery featuring artists who explore a range of themes and ideas relating to robots, artificial intelligence (A.I.), online networks and synthetic biology to highlight our hopes and fears for a present and future increasingly shaped by technological advance. There has been a glut of recent news reports that obsess with the idea of robots and A.I. replacing humans in the workplace. We fear apocalyptic scenarios of A.I. machines rebelling against us; yet advances in robotics, A.I. and synthetic biological research also point to a bright future free of disease, where we live longer and our lives are made easy. The artists gathered together for Our Friends Electric draw inspiration from front-line scientific research, yet provide a creative – and emotive – understanding to the continuing moral and ethical questions that surround new and evolving technology. About the artworks

Digital Painting Bot by Kim Asendorf & Ole Fach playfully posits the questions ‘what do computers do in their spare time?’ and how do they ‘experience the world?’ suggesting an artificially intelligent response to the idea of ‘leisure’. Robots in Distress by boredomresearch is a single-screen projection using real-time software featuring emotionally sensitive robotic ‘agents’, who can display despondency, programmed to monitor the environment in a marine habitat. My Robot Companion by Anna Dumitriu & Alex May explores questions of social robotics, asking ‘do we want and need robot companions?’ And, if so, what kind of robot companions do we, as a society, want? Joey Holder’s film work Ophiux suggests a future where we as humans are augmented and upgraded, ‘a future in which synthetic biology has been fully realized… and where human biology has been computer programmed’. Alex Pearl examines automata and our relationship with machines, producing films that show his robotic creations moving towards breakdown. Lost in Translation by Stanza features a custom-made robot that makes drawings, in response to a series of texts spoken by into a microphone interface, that are unique to each reader. ‘The work questions not only the meaning and interpretation of text but just who controls our understanding of the outputs and indeed what is ‘lost in translation’. Since the dawn of the Information Age scientists, technologists and artists have been working with machines or programmes to produce artworks. As innovation continues at a rapid pace and access to technology becomes widespread, artists have more opportunities than ever to experiment with new ways of producing art. This exhibition presents the work of selected artists who responded to a national open call seeking artworks that utilise robotics or artificial intelligence at some stage in their production, or artworks that explore and question the ethics and issues surrounding our technological future, specifically relating to robots and A.I.

His films focus on place and memory, and use the landscape of his hometown of Eden, Northern Ireland as a site for investigation.
