As we head into the darkest nights of the year it’s the perfect chance to make the most of QUAD’s welcoming venue and settle down to some awesome films, fabulous exhibitions, fun activities and great food in our Café Bar.
In the 70th anniversary of India’s independence, now is a great time to celebrate rarely seen true classics of Indian cinema, many of which have previously been unavailable to screen in the UK.
And what could be more dark than our new Crime Time film season, a great selection of the best noir /thriller films past and present with introductions, a film course and even a DJ night. Another film season, India on Film, celebrates the 70th anniversary of India’s independence with some rarely seen classics. Our December exhibition is an inspiring installation by Kimchi & Chips, a Seoul based art studio founded by Elliot Woods (UK) and Mimi Son (South Korea), using digital light and computation to manipulate physical space. If you enjoyed the teamLab exhibition last year, do take time to check out this work in QUAD Gallery. Just to mention that Christmas word – don’t panic! We’ve everything from gift solutions and great stocking fillers in QUAD’s shop or why not pick up a QUAD Membership for your favourite film-fans. Vouchers for Courses or cinema tickets can also be bought as a gift. Once you have done the shopping, relax in our Café with something from our December drinks menu and get in the seasonal spirit with some Festive films and events. An extraordinary collaboration between artists in hostile parties – West Pakistan, East Pakistan, India and the UK – Day Shall Dawn is a long-lost treasure of Pakistani cinema. Out of circulation for decades, this film has been denied an audience over the years. Ripe for rediscovery, the film is inspired by Manik Bandopadhay’s 1930 novel Padma River Boatman and focuses on the intimate struggles and infinite wells of humanity and dignity in the daily lives of fisherfolk in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), a world dominated by poverty and exploitative loansharking.
An immortal classic, Guru Dutt’s soulful, romantic masterpiece is frequently listed as one of the greatest films of all time. Made in 1957, the same year as Mehboob Khan’s Mother India, it was part of Hindi cinema’s golden age. Translating as ‘The Thirsty One’ set in post-independence Kolkata (then Calcutta), it tells of a young poet’s ambition. But after he is mistakenly believed killed in an accident and his reputation instantly soars, he sees that success may hang only on a twist of fate. Beautifully restored in 2015, the stark black and white photography powerfully evokes the antagonistic forces at work in this classic romantic melodrama.

The Chess Players
Brothers Vicky and Sonu Duggal are partners in crime, churning out sex-horror films for the underground Mumbai’s small picture houses, where opportunism, corruption and lust abound. Skirting censorship, and gangland distributors, hustler Vicky struggles to run their operation, leaving the legwork to Sonu, whose rage bubbles beneath the surface. On the train home one day, Sonu is mesmerised by the mysterious Pinky, a struggling actress. He knows that only she can save him. Increasingly resentful of Vicky, Sonu decides to produce his dream romantic film, Miss Lovely. But nothing is what it seems in this garish underworld of shifting alliances and doomed love.

Set in Lucknow in 1856, two noble landowners Mir (Saeed Jaffrey) and Mirza (Sanjeev Kumar) incessantly play chess every day oblivious to the political developments happening around them; the colonising aims of a powerful British army seeking to annex the Indian state of Awadh. Ray uses chess as a subtle metaphor for the larger political game being played out around Mir and Mirza.

The Death of Stalin From 20th October – 2nd November USA/UK 2017 107 mins Dir: Armando Iannucci “ The Death of Stalin is superbly cast, and acted with icy and ruthless force by an A-List line-up. There are no weak links. Each has a plum role; each squeezes every gorgeous horrible drop.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian. The return to the cinema screens of Armando Iannucci after 2009’s In The Loop is a welcome return indeed. This black comedy follows the backstairs intrigue that followed the death of Stalin in 1953 and the Soviet Communist Party’s leaders’ attempts to cope with the massive vacuum left at the heart of the state. An amazingly well cast film that features Michael Palin, Steve Buscemi, Jason Isaacs, Andrea Riseborough and Simon Russell Beale.

Tracing the delicate web of friendship and loss that binds these women together, the film is anchored by compassion, generosity and an incredible vitality of the characters. Channelling the spirt of Elmore Leonard, the Safdies have created a visual odyssey packed with claustrophobic energy.

USA 2017 121 mins Dir: Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris This biopic of tennis star Billie Jean King, played by Emma Stone focuses after King’s triumphant win at the 1972 US Open. Here she finds that a new prize fund has been introduced offering women eight times less than the men. Her opposition brings out the misogynist ex-pro Bobby Rigg (Steve Carell), who challenges her to an exhibition match to prove finally, in his eyes, who is the better sex! The film also explores King’s marriage and her burgeoning same-sex relationship with her hairdresser, played by the everreliable Andrea Riseborough.
UK 2017 117 mins Dir: Andy Serkis Andy Serkis steps out of the motion capture suit and behind the camera for this true-life drama about Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield) and his unwavering wife, Diana (Claire Foy) as they face the odds in his fight against polio. A spirited tea broker is suddenly and irreversibly paralysed with polio aged 28. Despite being confined to a bed, he devotes the rest of his life to help fellow patients and the disabled. A great central performance by Garfield may put him on the same wave that swept Eddie Redmayne to the Oscars for The Theory Of Everything.
“ A shot of pure cinematic joy” Little White Lies Director Sean Baker made a huge splash in 2015 with the ‘shot-on-aniPhone’ film Tangerine, and his new film follows up on that gem. Set in the shadows of the theme parks of Orlando, this film follows the inhabitants of a motel block and their everyday battle to live, ride and survive in Disney territory. Single mum Halley is struggling to raise her wisecracking child Moonee while Willem Dafoe is brilliant as the harried motel manager Bobby whose life seems to consist of keeping his rowdy tenants in check. A fantastic portrait of working class America.
The Glass Castle USA 2017 127 mins Dir: Destin Cretton Based on the best-selling memoirs of Jeanette Walls, this new film follows Jeanette (Brie Larson) as a young girl coming of age amidst a dysfunctional family of non-conformist nomads. Her mother Rose Mary (Naomi Watts) is an eccentric artist while her father (Woody Harrelson) is a drunk who tries to stir the children’s imaginations as a distraction from their poverty.

Last years The Lobster was a hit in UK cinemas, including QUAD, and he returns with another all-star cast for this tale of a heart surgeon’s bafflingly strange life. Steven Murphey (Colin Farrell) is a successful professional man with a stylish wife (Nicole Kidman), two charming children…and a 16 year old best friend? The odd dynamic between the two, starts to unfold – what has this teenager got on Steven? An unusual strange world has been created here but what do you expect from the director of The Lobster and Dogtooth.

Celebrating twenty years since Brass Eye’s transmission in 1997, Oxide Ghosts is made from hundreds of hours of unseen material from director Michael Cumming’s personal archive and shares insights into the process of making the legendary TV series Brass Eye. Biopic of the British playwright Joe Orton, celebrating its 30th Anniversary. Based on diaries, the film tells the tragic story of Orton (played by Gary Oldman) and his older lover Kenneth Halliwell. Both are desperate for acclaim but it is the younger writer Orton that is shot to fame after his enormously successful plays Entertaining Mr Sloane and Loot hit the London Stage.
USA 2017 104 mins Dir: George Clooney George Clooney steps behind the camera once again with frequent collaborators The Coen Brothers scripting this satirical black comedy. Suburbicon is a peaceful, idyllic community with affordable homes and manicured lawns. Matt Damon plays Gardner Lodge, a man reeling from a brutal home invasion that resulted in the death of his disabled wife. While his neighbours are suitably scandalised, they have other things on their mind: the black family that have moved in down the street. Set in 1959, this film parallels the very modern problem of racism hiding behind the white picket fences of suburban America.

Running from late October to late December, QUAD will be stepping into the world of femme fatales, serial killers, assassins, hostage situations, wire-tapping, snipers, political intrigue and good old-fashioned crime films. There will be fifteen films drawn from the archives, the BFI Thriller nationwide season and the touring programme States of Danger and Deceit from HOME in Manchester. The Coen brothers’ thrilling debut is back on the big screen in a new 4k restoration approved by The Coens and cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld (Men In Black). Immediately pulpy and cultish in feel, Blood Simple possesses all the characteristics that propelled the Coens to later success – razor sharp dialogue; a predilection for lethal and futile violence; ironic, fatalistic humour; and an inventive focus on the tragicomic lives of idiosyncratic misfits. M. Emmett Walsh is sleazy Texas private eye Visser, hired by bar owner Marty (Dan Hedaya) to kill his unfaithful wife (Frances McDormand) and her lover (John Getz). Given a plan to work from, he decides to modify it without warning; and matters quickly spiral out of control. Gene Hackman plays Harry Caul in Francis Ford Coppola’s classic paranoid thriller. Caul is a surveillance expert, tasked with recording a couple with cold professional distance by an unknown client. But what he captures raises unsettling, deadly questions. Wrestling with the echoes of the past, Caul is tormented by past mistakes and forced to engage with his work’s moral implications. Released within years of the Watergate scandal, The Conversation is both a telling document of the paranoid ’70s and also a chilling reminder in an age where surveillance is the norm. Featuring a wealth of incredible supporting actors – Harrison Ford, Robert Duval and John Cazale – this is a haunting film about technology, alienation and guilt.

Tension builds between the men as they inch their way over the treacherous mountain roads, in the knowledge that the slightest jolt could have explosive consequences. Jean-Louis Trintignant plays a magistrate assigned to investigate the supposed accidental death of a left-wing politician, memorably played by Yves Montand. In the course of his work he uncovers a series of deceits and lies that attempt to hide the real political motivation of the killing. Winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film in 1970, after also having been nominated for Best Picture.

The recently sadly departed Jonathan Demme’s seminal thriller was only the third film to sweep all the top categories at the Oscars. Based on the Thomas Harris novel, Jodie Foster is young, shrewd FBI trainee Clarice Starling, assigned to interview – and bait – brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer Dr Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). But as she tries to pry his secrets loose, he in turn begins questioning her – skilfully digging into her psyche and eliciting long buried traumas. An exceptional thriller and an undeniable classic. The screening on Saturday 17th November at 6:15pm will be introduced by MA Film Student Charlotte Baker.
Sweden 1976 110 mins Dir: Bo Wilderberg
The Man On The Roof, featuring the character Martin Beck from the long running series of novels by left-leaning crime writers Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo, is a great example of a 1970’s Scandi-crime film. Here Beck, played by CarlGustaf Lindstedt, and his team investigate a brutal murder in a hospital, encountering stories of police brutality as they progress, which in turn leads to a thrilling climax on the rooftops of Stockholm. A great opportunity to see the roots of the current wave of Scandinavian crime dramas.
Ida Lupino’s gritty noir deserves to become a classic of the thriller genre. Based on the case of psychopathic murderer Billy Cool, the story begins with two friends (Edmund O’Brien and Frank Lovejoy) taking a fishing trip. Picking up a hitchhiker (William Talman), they quickly realise their mistake as he forces them on a grim road trip, after fleeing a killing spree. A terrifyingly real ride into the heart of darkness. John Dahl’s reputation featured an all-time great femme fatale in Bridget Gregory (Linda Fiorentino). Self-interested and willing to achieve her ends by any means, she washes up in Beston, a tiny town in New York State, having made off with the ill-gotten gains of a drugs deal. Needless to say her hardboiled past catches up with her, with her robbed husband hot on her trail. The screening on Monday 27th November at 6:10pm will be introduced by journalist and film critic Nigel Powlson.

This rather wonderful Giallo (the Italian violent thrillers named after the publishing trend of bright yellow book covers) is a great example of the ways in which a popular form, here the giallo style of violent thriller, can be used to critique institutions. Hetain Patel’s exhibition continues until 19th November. Consisting of two film works: a major new commission, Don’t Look At The Finger (2017), commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella with Manchester Art Gallery and QUAD, and The Jump (2015); these works continue the artist’s recent fascination with staging archetypal Hollywood action scenes within familiar settings. Employing the characteristic humour in all Patel’s work, the films, crafted into a single multi-screen installation, create an immersive cinematic experience that is in turns playful, suspenseful and occasionally ominous. Shot with production values that emulate Hollywood feature films, both works feature an original orchestral soundtrack by composer Amy May that Patel employs to push the installation into epic realms.

Carmen On The Lake: From Lake Constance, Austria Encore: Monday 20th November at 1:00pm
Performed on the spectacular water stage of Lake Constance in Bregenz, Austria, George Bizet’s Carmen is a story of passion, destiny and obsession. The French composer’s opera is most famous for its Spanish melodies, including the Flower Song, Habanera and the Toreador Song. Recorded live on the floating stage with an extravagantly original and innovative design and the waters of the lake being used as an extension. This production of Carmen will be directed by Kaspar Holten, Director of Opera at the Royal Opera House in London, with the set designed by the British artist Es Devlin whose past work includes sets for such stars as Adele, Take That, and Kanye West. In this exhibition, Lightseekers (Kajal Nisha Patel) presents a new selection of sculptural works produced by participants during collaborative workshops. These workshops were designed to encourage the reimagining of artisanal craftsmanship, skill-sharing and hands-on production led by professional sculptor David Booth and Lee Richards of Upcycled Creative. Newly made lens-based works based on these varied and expansive collections of sculptural objects are also presented. The workshops took participants through a series of activities, from conceptual thinking to development of sculptural and utilitarian artworks using local scrap metal and other recycled materials. This led to wider discussions on art and making as a catalyst for change and a tool for communities to begin the process of forming new, collective identities, shaped around skills and knowledge exchange, and reflecting on the regions pre and post-industrial periods in which technological advances have forever altered the role of artisans in society.

Kimchi and Chips Line Segments Space 9th December 2017 – 28th January 2018 QUAD Gallery
QUAD presents the first UK showing of the mesmerising and immersive installation Line Segments Space by acclaimed Seoul-based artist and technology duo Kimchi and Chips. An architectural web of threads spans a gallery space. It hangs abstract and undefined, a set of thin positive elements segmenting the dark negative space between. Dynamic imaginary forms are articulated into physical volume by the material of this thread, and the semi-material of the light, the visual gravity of the filaments occupying the space between. A 2D canvas is reduced from a surface piece into a line segment, but then constructed into another dimension, a volume. Light creates contrast and order on the lines to articulate digital matter. Digital forms inhabit the interconnected boundaries of space, moulding visual mass.

Kimchi and Chips is a Seoul based art studio founded by Elliot Woods (UK) and Mimi Son (South Korea). The studio creates actions which superimpose material and immaterial modes of existence, suggesting new technical and artistic attitudes. These actions actualise fictional realities as physical experiences, often employing digital light and computation to manipulate physical space.

Their fellowship includes a major exhibition of their stunning installation Line Segments Space, talks, advice sessions and a short residency in QUAD Artist Studio. General Practice: Manifold 9th December 2017 – 28th January 2018 QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces
QUAD presents newly commissioned work by General Practice, a multidisciplinary artist collective living and working from Lincoln, UK. Produced during a 12-week residency, the exhibition creatively explores the Peak District’s topography and geographic histories - a landscape that has been shaped and morphed by nature over hundreds of millions of years - through collaborative, expressive and experimental practice. A series of newly produced artworks from a range of disciplines which have taken inspiration from the geography and mythology of this vast and varied National Park. Exhibiting Artists: Ellen Brady, Nathan Baxter, Nick Simpson, Rob Britt, Ross Oliver and Michelle Forrest-Beckett.

Artist and curator Debbie Adele Cooper joins us to share an insight into two of her recent projects: Derby Anon/If on a Winter’s Night, produced during a long-term artist residency with W. W. Winter Ltd, one of the world’s longest running photographic studios, founded in 1867 in Derby; and Unseen & Unheard Things, her latest project produced during an artist residency at Dartmoor Prison, where she created new audio and photographic work in response to the diaries of both past and present prisoners. Cooper’s artistic practice involves the use of both digital and analogue photographic techniques including glass plate, cyanotype and other alternative processes; high-resolution digital scanning, sculpture, installation and sound. Brooklyn-based contemporary percussion group Sō Percussion present an audio-visual exploration of the social history of British coal mining. For two centuries, the coal industry formed the backbone of many towns and cities across England; mining activity fuelled the industrial revolution. Integrating art, narrative, photography, film and an original musical soundscape performed live, Sō Percussion – known for their innovative and original productions – capture the environment, personal stories and aspirations of a community fighting against industrial decline.
From Out a Darker Sea is coproduced by the Sacred Spaces Network Project, produced by Forma and supported by Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring programme, The Foyle Foundation, Cockayne - Grants for the Arts and The London Community Foundation. After a decade working in literature, including roles in publishing, teaching, editing and proofreading, QUAD’s Literature Officer Alex Davis is proud to bring his series of ‘literature surgeries’ to the venue, returning after a sell-out day in September. Offering a range of useful feedback on story and writing style, as well as potential paths to publication, these sessions are perfect for any writer looking for further guidance on their works in progress and longer-term career. From the Yakuza to the Cosa Nostra, corrupt cops to bank heist bandits, this 6-week trip through world cinema will trace the history of the crime film. Derby Poetry Festival And Twisted Tongues Present: Poetry Slam
Tony Walsh (Longfella Poet) has been performing poetry since 2004 and brings his full-length show to QUAD for Derby Poetry Festival. He has appeared all over the UK and worked internationally for the British Council. In May 2017 Walsh rose to international acclaim after reading his poem ‘This Is the Place’ to crowds gathered for the public vigil at Albert Square in Manchester, to pay tribute to the victims of the Manchester Arena bombing. Footage of the reading went viral and since then he has appeared at several high profile events including the ‘One Love’ Manchester and ‘We Are Manchester’ concerts. This intimate show is exclusive to The Derby Poetry Festival and promises to kick off the event in style. Tickets £10

An evening of Spoken Word, Archives, Visual Art and Photography 2018 marks the centenary of the end of WWI. Empire troops fought in the most infamous battles of the war, including Ypres and Passchendaele. This exhibition and spoken word event is part of a touring exhibition to Nottingham, Leicester, London and Derby that commemorates forgotten commonwealth troops and brings to the fore the hidden histories and stories of soldiers from Africa, the Caribbean and South Asia.
