FILMS Daphne UK 2017 90 mins Dir: Peter Mackie Burns
Blade Runner 2049 From Friday 6th October USA 2017 Dir: Denis Villeneuve
Harrison Ford has been revisiting roles from his past with Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and the just announced Indiana Jones film but it is his role of Rick Deckard, Blade Runner that is possibly the most intriguing. Ryan Gosling is a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department who unearths a long-buried secret that has a catastrophic consequence. This discovery leads him on a quest to find the missing Rick Deckard. Sicario and The Arrival director Denis Villeneuve directs this return to the neo-noir world of Blade Runners and Replicants.
Daphne has ‘sort of given up on people’ as she goes through the motions of her busy life, working as a cook in a London restaurant and through a series of drug fuelled hook ups. She resists genuine intimacy in her few friendships and rejects her mother Rita’s attempts to engage. When she witnesses a violent robbery, she’s thrown into chaos and finally begins to confront the person she’s become. Cut from the same ironic, confessional cloth as Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s BBC series Fleabag, Daphne offers us a female protagonist who can be as fiercely unlikeable as she is compelling to watch.
Detroit From Friday 25th August USA 2017 143 mins Dir: Kathryn Bigelow
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind USA 1977 137 mins Dir: Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg followed the massive worldwide success of Jaws by jumping with both feet into the world of science fiction. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind follows the parallel stories of a group of scientists investigating a series of strange occurances while electric lineman Roy (Richard Dreyfuss) struggles to come to terms with what he has seen after witnessing a UFO. This classic of big ideas science fiction filmmaking stars Teri Garr, Bob Balaban and legendary French filmmaker Francois Truffaut.
Star Wars star John Boyega leads in this new film from the makers of Zero Dark Thirty and The Hurt Locker. A powerful dramatization of the 1967 12th Street Riot, Detroit tackles the monumental issue of race in America crafting a searing historical nightmare of a film. The film begins with a raid on an unlicenced bar with the overzealous police treating the black patrons like criminals, lining them up outside. An incensed crowd gathers as the outrage overflows. Depicting an event from 50 years ago, this film shouldn’t have this much modern day relevance.
Dennis Skinner: The Nature Of The Beast Friday 8th September at 7:00pm SOLD OUT Extra screening added: Friday 8th September at 6:00pm (no Q&A) UK 2017 106 mins Dir: Daniel Draper
In an era of PR and spin, Dennis Skinner is a thrillingly authentic political figure; fearsome, principled and uncompromising, he has been fighting for the interests of the people of Bolsover since 1970. An ex-miner, he has represented his community through the industrial action of the 1970s, the closure of the mines and the slow drift to the ‘centre-ground’ within Labour politics. Famous for his sharp wit and unyielding style, Skinner has remained true to his roots, fighting for the disadvantaged and often getting himself into trouble in Parliament, earning himself the nickname ‘The Beast Of Bolsover’.

After half a century, this is your chance to hear the final word from the greatest metal band of all time. the truth behind the headlines a film by morag livingstone
Finding Your Feet UK 2017 111 mins Dir: Richard Loncraine
When Sandra (Imelda Staunton) discovers her husband (John Sessions) has been having an affair with her best friend (Josie Lawrence), she leaves her world and moves in with her outspoken, serial dating, free spirited estranged older sister Bif (Celia Imrie). Suddenly, a fish out of water on the inner-city council estate, Sandra gets a new lease on life thanks to an energetic and defiant group of third-agers (Joanna Lumley, Timothy Spall, David Hayman).
Bread & Roses Belonging: The Truth Behind The Headlines Monday 18th September at 6:45pm UK 2017 89 mins Dir: Morag Livingstone
This investigative documentary looks back at three industrial disputes of the past 30 years; the eventual privatisation of the postal service, the strike by the Grangemouth oil refinery workers and Rupert Murdoch’s hold over large swathes of the British newspaper business. This film goes behind the scenes with the trade union officials, with secret meetings to circumnavigate monopoly laws and government policies around increasing the power to big business.
Bread & Roses Dispossession: The Great Social Housing Swindle Monday 16th October at 6:45pm UK 2017 82 mins Dir: Paul Sng
A new feature documentary directed by Paul Sng (Sleaford Mods: Invisible Britain) and narrated by Maxine Peake, exploring the catastrophic failures that have led to a chronic shortage of social housing in Britain. The film focuses on the neglect, demolition and regeneration of council estates in London, Glasgow and Nottingham and investigates how the state works with the private sector to demolish council estates to build on the land they stand on, making properties that are unaffordable to the majority of people in the UK.
Final Portrait UK 2017 90 mins Dir: Stanley Tucci
Geoffrey Rush stars as the Swiss painter and sculptor Alberto Giacometti in this biopic of the artist’s life. Set over the course of two weeks in 1964, when Giacometti decides to create a portrait of his friend, the American author James Lord (Armie Hammer). Rush spins the role of Giacometti as an obsessive artist who is at once elated, possessed and haunted. Stanley Tucci steps behind the camera for the first time since 2007’s Blind Date and looks to finally capitalise on his remarkable directorial debut Big Night.
God’s Own Country UK 2017 104 mins Dir: Francis Lee
Hailed as the UK’s answer to Brokeback Mountain, Francis Lee’s remarkable debut feature tells a story that is nevertheless anything but derivative. Johnny Saxby, a taciturn young man, lives on a failing Yorkshire farm with his father and grandmother. Unhappy and frustrated with his life, he numbs his life with binge drinking and casual sex. But when Gheorghe, a Romanian migrant worker, is brought in to help during lambing season, it ignites an intense relationship. A perceptive and intelligent film that also captures the beautiful countryside as wild, lonely and profoundly estranging. “ A beautifully judged, unsentimental study from first time director Francis Lee. ” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
Goodbye Christopher Robin UK 2017 Dir: Simon Curtis
The Glass Castle USA 2017 Dir: Destin Cretton
Based on the best-selling memoirs of Jeanette Walls, this new film follows Jeanette (Brie Larson) as a young girl coming of age amidst a dysfunctional family of non-conformist nomads. Her mother Rose Mary (Naomi Watts) is an eccentric artist while her father (Woody Harrelson) is a drunk who tries to stir the children’s imaginations as a distraction from their poverty.
This new biopic tells the behind the scenes story of author AA Milne and the creation of the beloved ‘Winnie The Pooh’ stories inspired by his son Christopher Robin Milne. Domhnall Gleeson stars as AA Milne whose magical world of Winnie the Pooh takes the world by storm sweeping up his wife Daphne (Margot Robbie) and his nanny Olive (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) in the international success. The books bring hope and comfort to an England after the First World War but what effect does this success have on Christopher Robin and the family.
An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth To Power USA 2017 98 mins Dir: Bonni Cohen & Jon Shenk
Ten years on from the film that significantly altered many people’s views and made them take climate change seriously, this follow up reveals how far we have come and poses what’s next for a real energy revolution. This sequel moves beyond the slideshow lecture format of the original to an intimate portrayal of former Vice President Al Gore as he continues his fight. At a time when climate change deniers have ascended into the highest echelons of global politics, An Inconvenient Truth 2 puts the shocking reality and the opportunities for positive change centre stage, where they cannot be denied.
Logan Lucky From Friday 25th August USA 2017 tbc mins Dir: Steven Soderbergh
Insyriated
S
Belgium 2017 86 mins Dir: Phillippe Van Leeuw
This gripping, Syria-set war drama won the Panorama Audience Award at 2017 Berlin Film Festival and features a stellar central performance from Hiam Abbass. The story revolves around the contemporary reality for many in the war-torn country, with its focus on Oum (Abbass), a mother of three who is confined to her flat in a city under siege. Turning it into a safe haven for her family and neighbours, she tries desperately to protect them from the savagery of the battles outside and maintain a sense of normal routine. But as the bombs threaten to destroy the building, snipers turn the courtyard into kill zones and government officials and burglars break in to steal, threaten violence and worse; war inevitably infiltrates the flat.
Lawrence Of Arabia
Steven Soderbergh’s self-imposed four year retirement from feature filmmaking is over and thank goodness! Logan Lucky is the type of crime caper that harkens back to Out Of Sight and the Oceans movies. Channing Tatum and Adam Driver are two hapless brother who, along with their sister Melie (Riley Keough) they must rob a NASCAR meet. To do so they need the best explosives expert they can get - but he’s in jail. A crime caper featuring Daniel Craig as Joe Bang in a role that is likely to make you forget that this man also plays James Bond. Also featuring Sebastian Stan, Katie Holmes, Seth MacFarlane, Hilary Swank, Macon Blair and Katherine Waterston.
UK 1962 216 mins Dir: David Lean
An idealistic young British officer in World War 1, Lawrence (Peter O’Toole) is assigned to the camp of Prince Feisal (Alec Guinness), an Arab tribal chieftain in a revolt against the Turks. In a series of brilliant tactical manoeuvres, Lawrence leads fifty of Feisal’s men in a tortured three week crossing of the Nefud Desert to attack strategic Turkish held port of Aqaba. Following his successful raids against Turkish troops and trains, Lawrence’s triumphant leadership and unyielding courage gain him nearly god-like status among his Arab brothers. This re-released David Lean epic classic deserves to be seen on the big screen.
The Limehouse Golem UK 2016 105 mins Dir: Juan Carlos Medina
Adapted from Peter Ackroyd’s murder-mystery novel by Jane Goldman (‘Woman In Black’), this debuted to excellent reviews after its screenings at Toronto Film Festival. Bill Nighy plays Scotland Yard detective John Kildare, transferred outside of London due to rumour, but brought back to uncover a Jack The Ripper-esque figure, the Limehouse ‘Golem’ whose East End murders have shaken the community. As Kildare uncovers suspects including Karl Marx, his path crosses that of music hall performer Elizabeth (Olivia Cooke) and they begin a series of conversations looking back into her past. “ This unlikely feminist Jack The Ripper-esque thriller cleverly unpicks late-Victorian London’s social structures.” The Guardian
London Symphony UK 2017 72 mins Dir: Alex Barrett
This new silent film offers a poetic journey through the city of London. It is a cultural snapshot of the cosmopolitan nature of city life as it stands today, and a celebration of this diversity. It is also a modern day ‘city symphony’, a genre of film-making that flourished in the 1920s, and consisted of films that attempted to build poetic portraits of city life. As well as serving as a kind of virtual tourism, such films raise important and universal questions about the nature of community life in the modern era. “ A gorgeous new film celebrates life in London.” Little White Lies
Loving Vincent
S
UK/Poland 2017 tbc mins Dir: Dorota Kobielam, Hugh Welchman
Oscar winning animator Hugh Welchman and Polish artist and director Dorota Kobiela have brought together 65,000 oil painted frames – produced by over 115 artists and using over 3,000 litres of paint – to form Loving Vincent, a stunning cinematic achievement billed as ‘the first fully painted feature film in the world.’ On 29th July, 1890, Van Gogh, bullet in his belly, stumbles along the high street of Auvers. Traditionally, the famously troubled artist’s death is viewed as suicide. But this film delves into the ambiguities of his life and last days to reconsider the narrative via the stories of his paintings and the people who inhabit them. Starring Robert Gulacyzk, Saoirse Ronan, Aidan Turner and Helen McCrory, whose performances form the basis of the impressionist animation.
Menashe
S
USA 2017 82 mins Dir: Joshua Z Weinstein
This is a remarkable, delicate and critically acclaimed account of an ultra-orthodox Jewish widower trying to maintain custody of his son. In the centre of New York’s ultra-orthodox Hasidic Jewish community, Menashe – a kind, albeit hapless, grocery store clerk – is struggling through life in the aftermath of his wife Leah’s death. Tradition requires that his son Rieven be raised in a house with a mother, so his late wife’s strict brother adopts him, leaving Menashe heartbroken. But Menashe’s rabbi allows him to keep his son at home with him for a week before Leah’s memorial, giving him a chance to prove himself a suitable man of faith and fatherhood. Shot covertly in the Brooklyn Hasidic Jewish community with winning, unself-conscious performances from a largely non-professional cast, this charming film is the first in roughly seventy years to be performed entirely in Yiddish, offering a valuable and authentic insight into this most insular and private of worlds.
The Odyssey
The Party UK 2017 71 mins Dir: Sally Potter
A fabulous cast are invited to a party in Sally Potter’s eighth feature, a political comedy wrapped around a tragedy about a dinner party gone very wrong. Janet (Kirsten Scott Thomas) has just been appointed Shadow Health Secretary, the crowning achievement of her career, and decides to celebrate by hosting a few close friends. But as the guests arrive her husband (Timothy Spall) makes a shocking announcement, leading to a cascade of explosive revelations and unravelling the soiree event before the canapes are served. Described by Potter as an anti-Brexit statement about a ‘broken England’, it’s a savage satire of the middle class, exploring the deeper truths behind seemingly liberal convictions, with insight and a killer wit.
S
France 2016 122 mins Dir: Jérôme Salle
Featuring a gleaming French cast including Audrey Tatou, director Salle takes us on a voyage through the life of legendary French oceanographer, environmentalist and filmmaker Jacques Cousteau. Spanning the globe, we see the flawed Cousteau, a visionary who is unable to reconcile his boundless ambition with his roles as father and husband. Lambert Wilson brings a rakish charm to Cousteau, a devil-maycare counterpoint to his wife, Tautou’s feisty and long suffering Simone. The story follows the stormy relationship between Cousteau and his son, Philippe as the they journey through Antarctica’s harsh beauty. Salle’s biopic never veers from Cousteau’s darker elements, yet pays tribute to his undeniable legacy as one of France’s enduring cultural icons. “ A bittersweet delight…rich, thoughtful, frequently funny” Screen International.

Bergman’s film ranks at the very top of the canon of great works of world cinema and Block’s chess game against Death is one of the most famous sequences in film history.

Billie Piper’s lead performance is described as ‘spellbinding’ (The Evening Standard), ‘astonishing’ (iNews) and ‘devastatingly powerful’ (The Daily Telegraph). Set in contemporary London, Piper’s portrayal of a woman in her thirties desperate to conceive builds with elemental force to a staggering, shocking, climax. Please note that this broadcast does not have an interval. “ Billie Piper makes a shattering Yerma in Simon Stone’s inspired reworking of Lorca ” The Observer “Brutal yet ferociously funny ” Metro “ A shatteringly powerful reinvention of a familiar classic ” The Independent

RSC Coriolanus
RSC Twelfth Night

Encores: Monday 6th November at 1:00pm Tuesday 7th November at 7:00pm
Encores: Monday 12th March at 1:00pm Tuesday 13th March at 7:00pm
A full-throttle war play that revels in the sweat of the battlefield, Coriolanus transports us back to the emergence of the republic of Rome. Caius Martius Coriolanus is a fearless soldier but a reluctant leader. His ambitious mother attempts to carve him a path to political power, but he struggles to change his nature and do what is required to achieve greatness. In this new city state struggling to find its feet, where the gap between rich and poor is widening every day, Coriolanus must decide who he really is, and where his allegiances lie.
‘ I am all the daughters of my father’s house, And all the brothers too.’ Twelfth Night is a tale of unrequited love – hilarious and heart-breaking. Two twins are separated in a shipwreck, and forced to fend for themselves in a strange land. The first twin, Viola, falls in love with Orsino, who dotes on OIivia, who falls for Viola but is idolised by Malvolio. Enter Sebastian, who is the spitting image of his twin sister… Christopher Luscombe, Director of the ‘glorious’ (Daily Telegraph) Love’s Labour’s Lost and Much Ado About Nothing (2014 and 2016), returns to the Royal Shakespeare Company to tackle Shakespeare’s greatest comedy, a brilliantly bittersweet account of “the whirligig of time”.

45 years after Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour filmed Live At Pompeii in the legendary Roman Amphitheatre there, he returned for two spectacular shows, part of his year-long tour in support of his album ‘Rattle That Lock’. The performances were the first-ever rock concerts for an audience in the stone Roman amphitheatre, and, for two nights only, the 2,600 strong crowd stood exactly where gladiators would have fought in the first century AD. ‘David Gilmour Live At Pompeii’ is an audio-visual spectacle, featuring lasers, pyrotechnics and a huge circular screen on which specially-created films compliment selected songs, but paramount above all is the astonishing music and stellar performances from an all star band. The show includes songs from throughout David’s career, as well as many Pink Floyd classics, including ‘One Of These Days’ the only song that was also performed at the band’s 1971 show. Both concerts also saw very special performances of ‘The Great Gig In The Sky’ from ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’, which David rarely plays as a solo artist. Also included tracks from his most recent albums as well as other solo and Pink Floyd classics, including Wish You Were Here and Comfortably Numb. Tickets: £15, £13 Concession & £11 QUAD Members

Canaletto And The Art Of Venice At The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace Tuesday 26th September at 7:00pm & Thursday 28th September at 12 noon Dir: David Bickerstaff
Exhibition On Screen opens its fifth season with Canaletto & the Art of Venice, an immersive journey into the life and art of Venice’s famous view-painter. No artist better captures the essence and allure of Venice than Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto. The remarkable group of over 200 paintings, drawings and prints on display offer unparalleled insight into the artistry of Canaletto and his contemporaries, and the city he became a master at capturing. The film also offers the chance to step inside two official royal residences - Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle – to learn more about the artist, and Joseph Smith, the man who introduced Canaletto to Britain. Guided by Royal Collection Trust curators and the world’s leading experts in Venetian history, the film is not only a wonderful way to see the exhibition, but an opportunity to get closer to Canaletto and the city that inspired him.
Cezanne: Portraits Of A Life Tuesday 23rd January at 7:00pm & Thursday 25th January at 12 noon Dir: Phil Grabsky
Exhibition On Screen is thrilled to present one of the most talked-about exhibitions of the year. Dedicated to the portrait work of Paul Cézanne, the exhibition opens in Paris before traveling to London and Washington. One can’t appreciate 20th century art without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne. Featuring interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art Washington, and Musée d’Orsay Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least-known of all the impressionists – until now.

Our Friends Electric Adventures in Robotics, A.I. and Other Stories
Machine Made: Art, Robots and A.I.
Until 10th September, QUAD Gallery
Until 10th September, QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces
Artists: Kim Asendorf & Ole Fach, boredomresearch (Vicky Isley & Paul Smith), Anna Dumitriu & Alex May, Joey Holder, Alex Pearl, Stanza
Our Friends Electric features artists who explore a range of themes and ideas relating to robotics, Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and synthetic biology, highlighting our hopes and fears for a future that is continually shaped by technological advance. To what extent do we - will we - control this technology, these machines... and will they control us? How far can we allow A.I. to advance, and what is the scope of our duty of care? There has been a recent glut of news reports and articles on social media networks that have focused on the idea of robots and A.I. replacing human beings in the workplace. Added to this is a latent fear involving apocalyptic scenarios where A.I. machines rebel against us; yet advances in robotics, A.I. and synthetic biological research also point to a bright future free of disease, where as we live longer our lives are made easier.

Artists:Â Jake Elwes, Duncan Gough, Philipp Schmitt, Stephan Bogner & Jonas Voigt, Marisa Tapper & Rob Homewood, Neale Willis. Since the dawn of the Information Age, scientists, technologists and artists have been working with machines or programs to produce artworks. As innovation continues at a rapid pace and access to technology becomes widespread, artists have more opportunities than ever to experiment with new ways of producing art. This exhibition presents the work of selected artists who responded to a national open call seeking artworks that utilise robotics or artificial intelligence at some stage in their production, or artworks that explore and question the ethics and issues surrounding our technological future, specifically relating to robots and A.I.
Hetain Patel 29th September – 19th November, QUAD Gallery
This new exhibition by artist Hetain Patel consists of two film works: a major new commission, Don’t Look At The Finger (2017), commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella with Manchester Art Gallery and QUAD, and The Jump (2015). These works continue the artist’s recent fascination with staging archetypal Hollywood action scenes within domestic settings. Employing the characteristic humour in all Patel’s work, the films, crafted into a single multi-screen installation, create an immersive cinematic experience that is in turns playful, suspenseful and occasionally ominous. Shot with production values that emulate Hollywood feature films, both works feature an original orchestral soundtrack by composer Amy May that Patel employs to push the installation into epic realms.
The Jump connects the widely recognised fantasy of action and superhero films with the domestic setting of his British Indian family home in Bolton, in the UK. Featuring 17 of his family members, the film is shot in Patel’s Grandmother’s home, the house that he and all of his relatives have lived in at various points since moving to the UK, and where his grandmother still resides. Featuring Patel’s homemade replica Spider-Man costume, The Jump presents two different view points of the artist leaping, suited up, in slow motion that is so slow it sometimes feels like a moving photograph. Don’t Look At The Finger is, at one level, an exploration of how the highly stylised genre conventions of Hong Kong martial arts movies have permeated the mainstream through the influence of directors like Quentin Tarantino and in blockbusters like The Matrix. It is also a reminder of how some of the highly specific signature symbols of historical cultural traditions and languages can become interestingly blurred and entangled in today’s hybrid and eclectic visual landscape. Shot in a church, Don’t Look At The Finger presents a wedding ceremony where bodies speak physically, where the protagonists seek human connection through ritual, combat and signed languages. Encompassing the UK, North America, South and East Asia, and West Africa, the confluence of culturally specific reference points inform the fluid relationship between reality and fiction that we see in these works by Patel, featuring specially made costumes, choreography, language and music that each question their own origins. Lightseekers | Art as Life. A practice for everyday life 29th September – 19th November 2017, QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces
In this new project commissioned by QUAD, Lightseekers focuses on the region of Derbyshire and its localised history of art and craft production. The project facilitates space for skill sharing and knowledge exchange through a series of intergenerational, intercultural workshops. The project provokes reflection on the skilled production of utilitarian objects and artisanal craftsmanship during the pre-industrialised period. The project explores the loss of community and individual identity, during an intense period of industrial change, when new communities arrived to serve within the textiles and hosiery mills and consequently settled. Working closely with the residents of Derbyshire, dialogues are created to foster better understanding between disparate groups, while encouraging new relationships and friendships across communities. Visit the QUAD website for more information on this project and exhibition. Lightseekers is a collaborative and creative social practice founded by artist Kajal Nisha Patel. www.lightseekers.co.uk

Aeppli works predominantly with video, creating work that uses personal and subjective forms of documentary and essay film, and includes photography, notebooks, observational material, literary and poetic texts and anecdotes and chance encounters with local people. His films focus on place and memory, and use the landscape of his hometown of Eden, Northern Ireland as a site for investigation. Eden exists around the perimeter fence of one of Ireland’s largest power stations. The name implies a place of great happiness and innocence but this is not an earthly utopia, ironically here the Garden of Eden is a shabby cul-de-sac. www.simonaeppli.co.uk Cost: £5, £4 members and concessions Image credit: Simon Aeppli
