FORMAT19 “This year’s edition for FORMAT is proving to be the biggest and boldest international event that we have directed to date, featuring more than 200 artists from more than 60 countries, alongside a rich programme of exhibitions and events, FORMAT is a vital force in the cultural ecology for practitioners and audiences alike.” FORMAT Festival Director Louise Fedotov-Clements
Festival year “QUAD is committed to bringing you the best in art, film and digital media, and our festivals are a showcase for all that is great in those areas” “Festivals happen all over the world and Derby has a growing reputation as a festival city, and for good reason. The size and accessibility of the city, along with its friendliness and diverse culture, makes festivals held here an ideal place for experimentation and provides an opportunity to see things for the first time.”
QUAD is also very much part of city-based festivals: Derby Book Festival in June and Festé in September. We are proud to be an integral part of the cultural offering in the city. Our festivals show how QUAD’s programme challenges boundaries, working at the cutting edge and aiming to create an international reputation of excellence and an ambition for the city. At the same time QUAD as an organisation is ingrained in the community; we aim to be accessible and inclusive to all and generate a sense of belonging. QUAD hasn’t changed these core values since we opened in 2008.
Adam Buss, QUAD CEO We launch our ‘festival year’ with the biennial FORMAT19 International Photography Festival taking place throughout Derby in March and April and the unique Paracinema Film festival in May. Now expanded to 20 heritage locations, Summer Nights outdoor film festival runs throughout the UK from July to September and, looking further ahead, November will be the new date for Derby Film Festival. These festivals are all curated and organised by QUAD, with the technical support of TECHSQUAD, and welcome local, national and international audiences to the city.

Paracinema Paracinema Film Festival launched in 2018 and is back for its second edition this quarter, from 3rd-6th May. Dedicating itself to films and genres that fall outside the mainstream, the bank holiday weekend is packed with unusual and gloriously strange films from around the world. Embracing the ‘anything goes’ ethos, we have stories of existential horror, superhero comedies, sleazy giallo thrillers, a time travel heist movie, a rotoscoped action film and much more. “Paracinema gives us, and audiences, an opportunity to jump around the genres over one Bank Holiday weekend. You may watch Knife + Heart which takes you to the neon soaked streets of Paris 1979, then immediately afterwards you’re experiencing Mega Time Squad, a time travel comedy heist movie from New Zealand. It’s this eclectic nature that is at the heart of Paracinema.” Paracinema Film Festival Director Adam J Marsh

UK premiere and new commission with W. W. Winter by Japan born,Venice-based artist Kensuke Koike. A conjurer of materials such as found photographs, he is a cut paper master who is constantly working with images to produce intricate collage, installation and sculpture. The artist has a taste for image re/construction, where the elements are broken apart and reconfigured with skill and humour. His work has impressive precision and a considerable international cult following on Instagram. Curated by Louise Fedotov-Clements and Peter Bonnell
Brought together in the context of Mutable, Multiple the projects occupy a hybrid documentary space between image and information, fiction and evidence, where associations of interviews, literature, press material, news footage, archival interventions and staged photography are the new norm. From a humanist perspective, Mutable, Multiple brings to bear issues of entrapment and disappearance, fantasy and escape, exile and longing. In various ways each project deals with fractured lives that are made apparent or concealed, allowing the viewer to meditate on the situations in which individuals can achieve ‘in/visibility’ in the world. Curated by Tim Clark and Louise Fedotov-Clements Image by Max Pinckers

Germany/UK 2018 120 mins Dir: Marcus H. Rosenmüller
English language debut from French auteur Claire Denis starring Robert Pattinson, Juliet Binoche and OutKast’s André Benjamin in a tale of criminals flung into deep space. Monte volunteers for a mysterious space mission investigating black holes to avoid imprisonment. In a spaceship, light years from Earth, accompanied by his baby daughter, a gang of fellow crooks and the ship’s doctor, who has her own motivations for being aboard.
The Keeper tells the incredible true story of Bert Trautmann (David Kross), a German soldier and prisoner of war who, against a backdrop of British post-war protest and prejudice, secures the position of Goalkeeper at Manchester City, and becomes a footballing icon.
Italian writer-director Alice Rohrwacher’s follow-up to The Wonders is a luminous magicrealist fable. UK 2018 101 mins Dir: Trevor Nunn

The ambitious directorial debut of actor Jonah Hill (Wolf of Wall Street), Mid90s is a spiky tale of youthful rebellion with an evocative soundtrack. Thirteenyear old Stevie (Sunny Suljic), is an awkward Los Angeles teen with ‘hair bigger than his head’ who escapes his bleak home life and violent older brother (Lucas Hedges) by befriending a group of skate punks who take him under their tattered wings.
Inspired by Ugandan author Monica Arac de Nyeko’s short story Jambula Tree, Rafiki (‘friend’ in Swahili) is first and foremost a tender love story, depicting the romance between two young women amid familial, societal and political pressures. Kena lives on a Nairobi housing estate with her mother. She befriends Ziki the daughter of his political rival. As their relationship deepens, so do the stakes, forcing them to choose between openness and secrecy, happiness and safety.

Tolkien
UK 2018 106 mins Dir: Annabel Jankel
USA 2019 Dir: Dome Karukoski
Based on Fiona Shaw’s 2009 novel of the same name. Set in 1950s post-WWII rural Scotland the film chronicles a lesbian romance between single mother Lydia (Holliday Grainger) who is dealing with the breakdown of her marriage, and Dr Jean Markham (Anna Paquin) returning home to take over her late father’s medical practice. The womens’ relationship prompts raised eyebrows in their provincial circles. A heart-wrenching portrait of a love against all odds.
With Nicholas Holt (Mad Max: Fury Road) in the title role, Tolkien explores the formative years of the orphaned author J.R.R. Tolkien as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the “fellowship” apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.

A major show hosted by London’s National Gallery and Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum was an event like no other. Given privileged access to both galleries the film documents this landmark exhibition, whilst interweaving Rembrandt’s life story, with behind-the-scenes preparations at these worldfamous institutions. Exploring many of the exhibition’s key works, through contributions from specially invited guests including curators and leading art historians, this EOS favourite makes a welcome return to the big screen marking the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt’s death.
Directed by David Bickerstaff
Though Vincent van Gogh never visited Japan it is the country that had the most profound influence on him and his art. One cannot understand Van Gogh without understanding how Japanese art arrived in Paris in the middle of the 19th century and the profound impact it had on artists like Monet, Degas and, above all, Van Gogh. The film travels not only to France and the Netherlands but also to Japan to further explore the remarkable heritage that so affected Van Gogh and made him the artist we know of today.

Justin Audibert (Snow in Midsummer, The Jew of Malta) turns Shakespeare’s fierce, energetic comedy of gender and materialism on its head to offer a fresh perspective on its portrayal of hierarchy and power.
‘To whom should I complain?’ When a young novice nun is compromised by a corrupt official, who offers to save her brother from execution in return for sex, she has no idea where to turn for help. When she threatens to expose him, he tells her that no one would believe her. Shakespeare wrote this play in the early 1600s, yet it remains astonishingly resonant today.
