Fans of the Dardenne brothers will recognise this film’s unsentimental realism in its approach to this electrifyingly domestic nightmare with intense, restrained performances throughout. The custody battle at the heart of this story is between Miriam and Antoine, with Miriam pushing for sole custody of their son who is an unwilling witness to the testimony of his father’s past abuses.Yet Antoine wins joint custody setting in motion a chain of events that is almost unbearably tense.
Maxine Peake gives a formidable performance as an aspiring female comedian standing up to a violent husband and the sexist Northern England club circuit. Ill treatment by men is something that the eponymous heroine is grimly used to. A fitting showcase for Peake who is hilarious and heart-breaking, while Paddy Considine is cast against type as the middle-class paramour. Featuring a swooning, melancholic soundtrack by Richard Hawley.

This story - a mix of archival footage, never before seen images, and interviews with The Slits along with Punk Rock royalty, extraordinary producers, scholars and those influenced by The Slits, can be best described by a quote from Ari Up herself: “I’m not here to be loved, I’m here to be heard”.

Monday 9th & Tuesday 10th April Sweden 1971 113 mins Dir: Ingmar Bergman
Ingmar Bergman puts his exquisite stamp on Mozart’s masterpiece in one of the best screen versions of opera ever made. Created lovingly on a custom-made set replicating an 18th century theatre, Bergman begins in the audience before letting the tales of Tamino, Pamina and others play out.
Karin (Bibi Andersson), a happily married mother of two, surprises herself by responding in-kind to an unforeseen profession of love from David (Elliot Gould), an archaeologist visiting Sweden, whom her doctor husband (Max von Sydow) has befriended. But love, however toxically exhilarating, is seldom simple, and the deceit and David’s volatile temperament take their toll.
