Education & Learning QUAD’s Education and Participation programme has been designed to play to our strengths and expertise in film, photography, digital and visual art.

Taking the idea of having an artist in residence at a school, to run workshops and make artwork, we turned it on its head by having schools in residence at QUAD working with our artists over the academic year. QUAD received funding from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to test out this idea and over the past two years we’ve worked closely with students and staff from five local schools: Da Vinci Academy, Derby Moor Academy, Horizons 6th Form and St Martin’s School, St Clare’s School and The William Allitt School, to deliver exciting opportunities to see and make great art. At the end of the first year (July 2019) students exhibited their work as part of QUAD’s summer exhibition.

Image Andy Pilsbury

Each year we deliver more than 400 workshops and activities for children, young people and families, with over 6000 attendances. QUAD advocates for the arts to play a vital role in developing skills, knowledge and confidence, enabling diverse audiences and artists to respond to and influence the world around them with creativity and innovation. QUAD’s education programme offers opportunities for school students and staff to take part in workshops, film screenings and gallery visits during term time, alongside evening, weekend and holiday activities for children and young people. Over the past two years, QUAD’s Education team have been extra busy, managing a number of funded longer term (and very exciting!) projects: School in Residence Programme, STEAM Photo Project and #ThisIsDerby web project.

#ThisIsDerby Web Project #ThisIsDerby is an award-winning project, begun in September 2018, which is a unique collaboration of sport, arts and cultural activity that aims to support the development of essential life skills of young people.

School in Residence Programme

STEAM Photo Project Also as part of the Derby Opportunity Area funding, QUAD received support from Derby City Council to deliver a year-long photography project with Horizons 6th Form and St Martin’s School. Students worked with a range of photographic artists to learn creative and technical skills in digital and analogue photography. Students exhibited their work this year at FORMAT Photography Festival and during QUAD’s summer exhibition season.

Led by Derby County Community Trust, Derby’s Cultural Education Partnership and Derby Sport Forum, the project is funded by and supports the work of the Derby Opportunity Area, which aims to increase the number of children achieving a good level of development, improved attainment in schools and benefiting from a broad range of experiences. As part of the project, QUAD worked with a small group of young people to design and develop a website to showcase #ThisIsDerby activity. In the first year the young web team built the website with help from designers Firecatcher and developers Frogspark. In the second year, the web team are developing two new pages on young people’s wellbeing and the environment. Take a look at the website, which has been designed for young people by young people: www.thisisderby.org

Exhibitions Imran Qureshi The Garden Within, 2019

Self Portrait: Open Call

Exhibitions QUAD Gallery Until 9th February 2020

Gallery One features a series of Qureshi’s gold and red/violet canvases. The red in these paintings suggests acts of violence. Qureshi’s signature flowers that emerge from the paint ‘…represent hope that - despite everything - the people sustain somehow, their hope for a better future’. The miniature works were painted when the artist realised that after 9/11 the world insisted on segregating religious people. Dragonflies also populate many of these works - creatures that the artist considers the embodiment of freedom. The large paper mountain The Garden Within is an installation made from 25,000 A1 sheets of recycled prints featuring Qureshi’s flowers paintings. In part this work commemorates soldiers from the Indian sub-continent who fought alongside the British in WWI, and a modern emergency: global warming and the climate crisis.

Exhibition Events

Open call exhibition of small biographical art works by Derbyshire based or born artists. The artworks are characteristic of the makers, reflecting on identity and their sense of home. Together, the works share characteristics about those living or born in the region.

Imran Qureshi Imran Qureshi is one of the most celebrated artists to emerge from Pakistan in the last twenty years. This exhibition highlights a wideranging practice that includes miniature painting, installation and video work. Complementing this, in Gallery Two, is the ‘Maktab Miniature Painting School’ featuring seven artists taught by Qureshi at the National College of Art (NCA) in Lahore and part of the first Maktab (‘school’ in Arabic) at the Lahore Biennale in 2018.

Also featured is the UK premier of two video works focusing on everyday life in Pakistan. From a series of films that the artist continually shoots on his iPhone, All is Smiles comments on mass consumerism. In contrast Song of Silence is inspired by events in Kashmir. The tattered white flag, flapping silently in the breeze, echoes the silence that has descended on the Kashmir Valley due to the current curfew. Imran Qureshi is represented by Corvi-Mora, London and Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Salzburg.

A curated programme of world cinema Many people claim that Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year… but as cinema fans know it is January to March when the real presents arrive. It’s Oscar season once again with a wide variety of great films to tick off your Awards Season list. Epic cinema fans will want to catch Sam Mendes’ World War 1 film 1917 while two very different films tackle the subject of World War II. Terrance Malik returns to form with his epic tale of a conscientious objector in Austria during World War II, epic storytelling from Malick. While Hunt For The Wilderpeople director Taika Waititi presents a tale of a young German boy and his imaginary friend Adolf Hitler set in Berlin during the final days of the war, hilarious and surprisingly moving. The variety is amazing with film like The Lighthouse, The Personal History of David Copperfield, Bombshell alongside Malick, Mendes and Waititi, something for everyone.

(S) Subtitled (Gisaengchung) South Korea 2019 132 mins Dir: Bong Joon-ho New from South Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho (The Host, Snowpiercer) comes this blackly comic satirical thriller that won the 2019 prestigious Palme d’Or. It follows the misfortunes of a downtrodden family, the Kims, who eke out a hand-to-mouth existence in an inner-city basement apartment. When the son, Ki-woo is presented with an opportunity to teach English to the daughter of the wealthy Park family, it begins a path to class warfare. Full of energy, verve and a transgressive visual wit, it is also brimming with rage exposing the inequalities of contemporary capitalism.

Jojo Rabbit

France 2019 122 mins Dir: Céline Sciamma

Czech Republic/New Zealand/USA 2018 108 mins Dir: Taika Waititi

Fresh from a Best Screenplay win at Cannes in 2019, this new film from Céline Sciamma (Water Lillies, Girlhood) is an elegant and enigmatic historical romance. At the end of the eighteenth-century Marianne (Noémie Merlant), a young painter, is commissioned to paint a portrait of a young woman, Lady Heloise (Adèle Haenel) to be used to elicit marriage proposals. Knowing that Heloise has previously refused to sit for portraits as she does not want to be married, Marianne disguises herself as a lady’s maid in order to gain her subject’s trust, only to find herself inadvertently falling in love with her. Both erotic and cerebral, bold and restrained, this film marks a new phase in Sciamma’s filmmaking and looks set to be one of the most exciting releases in 2020.

Writer director Taika Waititi (Hunt For The Wilderpeople), brings his signature style of humour and pathos to his latest film, a World War II satire that follows a lonely German boy JoJo (Roman Griffin Davis) whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi), Jojo must confront his blind nationalism.

With Alice Eve, Tricia Helfer, Ashley Greene, Mark Duplass, Alison Janney, Richard Kind as Rudy Giuliani and Malcolm McDowell as Rupert Murdoch.

A tribe of cats called the Jellicles must decide yearly which one will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new Jellicle life. Cats stars James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson and introduces Royal Ballet principal dancer Francesca Hayward in her feature film debut.

USA 2018 103 mins Dir: Pamela B. Green Alice Guy-Blache was a true pioneer who got into the movie business at the very beginning - in 1894, at the age of 21. Two years later, she was made head of production at Gaumont and started directing films. She moved to the USA, founded her own company and made more films. But by 1919, her career came to an abrupt end, as she and the 1000 films that bore her name were largely forgotten. Pamela B. Green’s film is a tribute but also a detective story tracing the circumstances by which Guy-Blache faded from memory. Narrated by Oscar winner Jodie Foster.

Sweden 2019 85 mins Dir: Johannes Nyholm

Italy 1960 174 mins Dir: Federico Fellini

Elin and Tobias’ marriage is in pieces, rife with unresolved anger and recrimination. They embark on a camping trip in the hopes of salvaging their fractured relationship. But, deep in the woods, they are not alone. Sideshow performers emerge to trap the couple in a cycle of torment and degradation from which there appears to be no escape. This exploration of grief explodes in a carnival of phantasmagorical horror, jet black comedy and psychodrama.

Federico Fellini’s exquisite tale of celebrity casts an adoring yet critical eye towards ‘60s Rome. Set over seven decadent days, the film follows Marcello Mastroianni’s philandering journalist, pursuing a happiness that’s always just out of reach. Massively influential both in film and the wider world, not only did “Dolce Vita” and “Felliniesque” become modernday words, but it also coined the term “paparazzi” after the hero’s persistent photographer sidekick.

Anne Frank: Parallel Stories Wednesday 29th January at 6:45pm

Holocaust Memorial Day Event

Oscar-Winning Helen Mirren tells the story of Anne Frank’s life through the pages of her world-famous diary, a story that has made the tragedy of the Holocaust known to readers all over the world. This emotive telling is entwined with the stories of 5 Holocaust survivors who shared Anne’s same fate of deportation, suffering and were denied their childhood and adolescence, but were fortunately able to go on and live the life that Anne was denied.

Monday 27th January from 7:30pm An evening of words, music and dance with this year’s theme Stand Together, which explores how genocidal regimes throughout history have deliberately fractured societies by marginalising certain groups, and how these tactics can be challenged by individuals standing together with their neighbours, and speaking out against oppression. In addition, expect poignant, moving and inspiring performances, including spoken word, poetry, traditional songs, music and dance, from Derby’s Jewish, Ukrainian, Gypsy, Armenian, Iranian and Bosnian groups, local schools plus contributions from many more of Derby’s diverse communities. This years’ keynote speakers are Derek Niemann, the grandson of an SS Officer, and Noemie Lopian, the daughter of two Holocaust survivors.

An evocative documentary which brings Anne’s tragic, yet incredible, story to life and explores why this story has become such an historic journal that holds such great relevance today.

Lucian Freud: A Self Portrait Tuesday 14th January at 7:00pm & Thursday 16th January 2020 at 1:00pm

The story of Christ’s death and resurrection has dominated western culture for the past 2000 years. It is perhaps the most significant historical event of all time, as recounted by the gospels but, equally, as depicted by the greatest artists in history.

For the first time in history the Royal Academy Of Arts in London in collaboration with the Museum Of Fine Arts in Boston, is bringing together Lucian Freud’s self-portraits. The exhibition will display more than 50 paintings, prints and drawings in which this modern master of British art turned his unflinching eye firmly on himself. One of the most celebrated painters of our time, Lucian Freud is also one of the very few 20th Century artists who portrayed themselves with such consistency. Spanning nearly seven decades his self-portraits give a fascinating insight into both his psyche and his development as a painter, from his earliest portrait painted in 1939 to the final one executed 64 years later. When seen together, his portraits represent an engrossing study into the dynamic of ageing and the process of self-representation.
