An exhibition of new and existing work by the American artist and ‘digital art pioneer’ Rebecca Allen, including the new Virtual Reality (VR) commission for QUAD titled ‘Life Without Matter’. This new work exists in both the Virtual Reality realm along with projected shadows of exhibition visitors on a special curved screen in the gallery space. An immersive experience that considers a future life in virtual reality where material things - physical matter - have mostly disappeared.

QUAD’s Digital Participation Artist in Residence, Leila Johnston, is exhibiting a new body of work inspired by dance and in-between places. The Sheffield-based artist collaborated with Déda associate dancers, Daniel Longhurst and Megan Smith to choreograph a performance, that is in part inspired by a workshop Leila led about dance and new technologies for Derbyshire Healthcare inpatients, with dancer Rosa Cisneros. Touching on themes of transformation, collaboration and hope in the face of uncertainty, this ambient installation comprises of chained LED matrices running film off Raspberry Pi. The LEDs are then diffused through perspex panels to create a dreamlike effect.

The exhibition also features recent VR artworks ‘INSIDE’ and ‘The Tangle of Mind and Matter’ as well as a selection of works drawn from her astounding career, including the interactive large screen installation ‘Bush Soul (#3)’ and the video ‘Musique Non Stop’ that the artist made for electronic music innovators Kraftwerk. Curated by Helen Starr, The Mechatronic Library and Peter Bonnell, Senior Curator, QUAD.

Digital Fellow Rebecca Allen is QUAD International Digital Fellow for 2018 - 2019. Her work is exhibited internationally and is part of the permanent collection of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Whitney Museum and Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Gallery Reading Room On the first Saturday of every month we open the doors to our Reading Room, which will have a selection of carefully selected texts by QUAD Gallery Artists Rebecca Allen, Zane Zelmene, Leila Johnston, curator Helen Starr, and QUAD Staff. We highlight three texts we recommend every month that correlate with the exhibition themes and subjects. Tea provided. No need to book, just turn up on the day - all welcome.

With Digital Producer Molly Richards Saturday 2nd February 12:00 noon – 4:00pm Molly Richards, a digital producer and writer based in London will lead a writing workshop focusing on Virtual Reality. Further details on QUAD’s website.

QUAD Gallery One 15th March - 9th June

QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces 15th March - 9th June

Composed around a series of photographic works that challenge modes of documentary and storytelling, Mutable, Multiple is an exhibition that explores how narrative, history, memory and myth can be recalibrated as a way of coming to terms with complex and changing realities. A story of stories, the exhibition features six artists – Max Pinckers, Edgar Martins, Stefanie Moshammer, Amani Willett, Anne Golaz and Virginie Rebetez – all of whom make use of the indirect narrative potential of photography to engage with their subject. Brought together in the context of Mutable, Multiple the projects occupy a hybrid documentary space between image and information, fiction and evidence, where associations of interviews, literature, press material, news footage, archival interventions and staged photography are the new norm. From a humanist perspective, Mutable, Multiple brings to bear issues of entrapment and disappearance, fantasy and escape, exile and longing. In various ways each project deals with fractured lives that are made apparent or concealed, allowing the viewer to meditate on the situations in which individuals can achieve ‘in/visibility’ in the world. Curated by Tim Clark and Louise Fedotov-Clements.

Sweden 2018 104 mins / Dir: Ali Abbasi Prepare for a love story like no other in this audacious Scandinavian fantasy that won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes 2018. Based on a novel by Let The Right One In author, Border is a unique and memorable tale of morality and identification that provokes its viewers with the push-pull of desire and disgust. South Korea 2018 148 mins Dir: Lee Chang-dong A sublime mystery thriller of obsessive love, based on Haruki Murakami’s short story Barn Burning and winner of the FiPRESCI prize at Cannes 2018. An isolated young man, Jong-soo (Yoo Ah-in) is living in Seoul, working in a menial job and dreaming of becoming a writer when he’s accosted by Hae-Mi (Jeon Jong-seo), who says she remembers him from their childhood in a small village close to the North Korean border.

Yorgos Lanthimos’s (The Lobster, Killing Of A Sacred Deer) latest and most accessible film is an outrageous period comedy with outstanding performances from Emma Stone, Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz as three complex, flawed, distinctive women. Set in the early 18th century, while England are fighting the French, a frail, capricious Queen Anne (Colman) sits on the throne; though the country is governed on her behalf by Lady Sarah (Weisz), a close friend who also tends to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. But as the politics of war begin to consume Sarah’s time, a new servant, Abigail (Stone) steps into the breach as the Queen’s companion. This new friendship allows Abigail to begin to fulfil her own ambitions. “Olivia Colman is priceless in punk Restoration romp.” Peter Bradshaw The Guardian Programmer’s choice

Sharp minded Marie Colvin (a bewitching performance from Rosamund Pike) had a fearless approach to capturing human stories in war zones. Widely recognised by the eye patch she insouciantly sported (the result of a grenade attack during an interview with Tamil Tiger rebels) Marie was a striking figure in London culture circles in the 2000s, as much at home with a Martini as she was confronting Muammar Gaddafi in an interview shortly before his death. Oscar Nominated Heineman has created a devastating portrait of a complex, brilliant woman.

Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) co-stars with Steve Carell (Foxcatcher) in Felix Van Groeningen’s (The Broken Circle Breakdown) English language debut. A powerful, soulful and intensely moving drama about addiction, it’s tragic consequences and reverberations through a family. Based on a true story, expect both Carell and Chalamet to be in the running come Oscar time.

Lucas Hedges plays Jared Eamons, the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town, who must overcome the fallout of being outed to his parents (Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe). His parents struggle with reconciling their love for their son with their beliefs. Jared is pressured into attending a conversion therapy programme. All Is True

UK/USA/Germany 2018 Dir: James Kent

From 8th February UK 2019 101 mins Dir: Kenneth Branagh

Set in post-war Germany in 1946, Rachael Morgan (Keira Knightley) arrives in the ruins of Hamburg in the bitter winter, to be reunited with her husband Lewis (Jason Clarke), a British colonel charged with rebuilding the shattered city. As they set off for their home, Rachael is stunned to discover that Lewis has made an unexpected decision: they will be sharing the grand house with its previous owners. Director James Kent follows up his successful Testament Of Youth with this potent human drama.

Kenneth Branagh returns to Shakespeare territory, this time playing the bard himself. The film follows the relationship between Shakespeare and his wife Anne Hathaway (Judi Dench) in the tumultuous final years of his life that saw a devastating fire destroy the Globe theatre and the death of their only son Hamnet. There is no shortage of Shakespeare veterans involved; aside from Branagh and Dench, Sir Ian McKellan co-stars as the Earl Of Southampton and Ben Elton provides the screenplay.

Colette From 11th January UK/USA/Hungary 2018 111 mins Dir: Wash Westmoreland 15

Bergman: A Year In A Life Sweden 2018 117 mins / Dir: Jane Magnusson Jane Magnusson directs and narrates a documentary that exposes the darker, less well-known side to one of the most famous directors in world cinema. Focussing on 1957, a landmark year in which Bergman directed two films, four plays and was on the cusp of six-year purple patch that would redefine world cinema; Magnusson explores not only the director’s filmography but his complex and turbulent personal life using a wealth of previously unseen archive material.

A radiant Keira Knightly gives a career best performance in this exhilarating, entertaining and timely film about the life of ground-breaking French novelist Colette. Whip smart, precocious and unapologetic, not only is Colette shown to be uniquely a talented (and later Nobel Prize nominated) author, actor and journalist, but also a feminist trailblazer, fighting for the survival of her voice in a maledominated world and shining a light for future generations of female artists.

Caring, patient, kindergarten teacher Lisa inadvertently discovers her five-year-old student, Jimmy is a gifted prodigy. She becomes determined to nurture his talent before his dismissive family destroy it – but her desire to do so sets her on a dangerous and desperate path. Nuanced and tense, this is a compelling moral drama.

Through her unique magical skills and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

Tuesday 4th June at 8:00pm, Thursday 6th June at 2:00pm Directed by David Bickerstaff

Pablo Picasso is one of the greatest artists of all time - and right up until his death in 1973 he was the most prolific of artists. Many films have dealt with these later years - the art, the affairs and the wide circle of friends. But where did this all begin? What made Picasso in the first place? Working closely with all three Picasso Museums in Malaga, Barcelona and Paris this film explains how he rose to such great heights.

Though Vincent van Gogh never visited Japan it is the country that had the most profound influence on him and his art. One cannot understand Van Gogh without understanding how Japanese art arrived in Paris in the middle of the 19th century and the profound impact it had on artists like Monet, Degas and, above all, Van Gogh.

Exhibition On Screen tickets: £14.00 £11.00 Concessions & QUAD Members

The film travels not only to France and the Netherlands but also to Japan to further explore the remarkable heritage that so affected Van Gogh and made him the artist we know of today.
