Virtual Worlds

Discover & explore The current year-long season at QUAD, unifying our wide-ranging artistic programme, is Open Worlds following on from our 2018 -19 season of Wellbeing. Open Worlds presents a curated programme that encompasses exhibitions, screenings, workshops, educational events, artist talks and an array of ways in which our audiences can engage. The term ‘Open Worlds’ evokes images of horizon-wide vistas, travel in unlimited quantities and borderless physical and metaphysical spaces. It can refer to open worlds in a gaming context, ‘sandboxes’ that invite exploration, endeavour and the opportunity to achieve. Indeed, these terms are the very things that drive our education and participation programme: we offer our visitors the opportunity to artistically experiment and explore, to learn and to develop new ways of looking at the world.

4

We do this through digital technologies such as an intergalactic space trip, the VR commission by Megan Broadmeadow, part of the exhibition SEEK PRAY ADVANCE, to Anna Bunting-Branch’s hand-drawn technique that features in the newly commissioned VR work Warm Worlds and Otherwise on display in QUAD Gallery in early 2020, to our regular MinecraftLAB that allows gifted young people to play and create virtual worlds around them.

“Being Digital Fellow this year at QUAD has been a real boost to my practice.” Megan Broadmeadow

Anna Bunting-Branch Warm Worlds and Otherwise, 2018

We also continue to work with artists who employ traditional techniques and are pleased to welcome the internationally renowned artist Imran Qureshi whose work focuses on contemporary miniature painting, installations and performances and is inspired by 16th Century Mughal art and culture. Imran is exhibiting work in QUAD Gallery in November 2019. His work reflects the wider world around us; the red in his paintings suggests dried blood and violence in his native Pakistan and violence in general. But as the artist himself says, ‘…the flowers that emerge from the red paint in my work represent the hope that—despite everything—the people sustain somehow, their hope for a better future.’ QUAD Senior Curator Peter Bonnell

Get involved Open Worlds at QUAD continues to the end of March 2020. There are numerous ways you can get involved and experience something unique that will open up the world around you.

Imran Qureshi is arguably one of the most celebrated artists to emerge from Pakistan in the last twenty years. This new exhibition at QUAD will offer an insight into the world of contemporary miniature painting, core to Qureshi’s practice, from Pakistan. Rooted in the tradition of 16th Century Mughal art and culture, contemporary miniature painting has at its core the National College of Art (NCA) in Lahore, where this discipline has been taught since the early 1900s. The project in Derby will be divided into two main but interlinked parts: a display of works by Imran Qureshi in QUAD Gallery One and the ‘Maktab’, an itinerant painting academy which will be set up in QUAD Gallery Two.

A Dog Called Money

UK 2019 94 mins Dir: Seamus Murphy Writer and musician PJ Harvey and award-winning photographer Seamus Murphy hatched a collaboration - seeking first-hand experience of the countries she wanted to write about. Harvey accompanied Murphy on some of his worldwide reporting trips, joining him in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Washington DC. Harvey collected words, Murphy collected images. Back home, the words become poems, songs, then an album, which is recorded as an unprecedented art experiment in Somerset House, London. In a specially constructed room behind one-way glass, the public - all cameras surrendered - are invited to watch the five-week process as a live sound-sculpture.

This year is going to be a packed Christmas and it is worth planning to avoid family members by camping out at QUAD. Things to look out for this Christmas include the finale to the new Star Wars trilogy Star Wars:The Rise Of Skywalker, the long awaited Frozen 2, Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women and King’s Speech director Tom Hooper has taken Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats by the scruff of the neck and brought it to life on the big screen.

Friday 25th October at 8:45pm, South Korea 2003 120 mins Dir: Park Chan-wook

(S) Subtitled

In 1988 drunkard Oh-Daesu (a memorably fierce performance by Min-sik Choi) is kidnapped and held captive with no clue as to the reason why. Released just as mysteriously fifteen years later, he sets out on a relentless and violent quest to discover just why he suffered this fate. Park Chan-wook’s intricately plotted thriller has been remastered in stunning 4K resolution giving film fans the chance to see one of the greatest cult films of the 21st century on the big screen.

In a futuristic city, a humanoid robot named Tima must discover her true origin and, with the help of a young man named Kenichi, find a way to bridge the gap between humans and the robots they treat as slave labour. This beautifully designed, and surprisingly moving, anime adapts one of the earliest manga works by Osamu Tezuka who is known in Japan as The God Of Manga because of his overwhelming influence on the animation and manga industries.

Wednesday 20th & Thursday 21st November UK 1986 108 mins Dir: Julien Temple

Sunday 1st & Monday 2nd December USA 1956 149 mins Dir: Joseph L. Mankiewicz

A much-loved film musical containing what many critics consider to be some of Rogers and Hammerstein’s best songs – no small feat as they wrote a string of hits from Oklahoma! to The King And I. The story revolves around Billy (Gordon MacRae), a rough-talking macho carousel barker, and Julie (Shirley Jones) a young mill worker. The two fall in love, but after both are fired, they struggle to remain afloat.

Set against a backdrop of emerging teen culture and rising racial tensions in 50s London, Julien Temple lavishly adapts Colin MacInnes’ novel. Struggling photographer Colin sees his ambitious girlfriend Crepe Suzette slipping away as she pursues a career in fashion. To win her back he’ll need to do whatever it takes to make the big time himself. Featuring Patsy Kensit, Eddie O’Connell, James Fox, Ray Davies, Sade, Steven Berkoff and the legendary David Bowie.

1950s New York: all the hot gamblers are in town, and they’re all depending on Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) to set up the next game. The only problem? He needs money, and to get it, bets inveterate gambler Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando) that he can’t get a date with virtuous, demure Sarah Brown (Jean Simmons). With serious star power, crackling dialogue and phenomenal songs it’s classic Hollywood musical entertainment in this new restoration of the film.

It follows Brian (Michael York), a new arrival in the city, as he befriends Sally (Liza Minnelli), a talented performer at the ´Kit Kat Klub’.
