FESTIVAL PATRONS DAVID MORRISSEY “I am happy to continue my association with Derby Film Festival as I strongly believe in its tenet of seeing cinema as not only entertainment but also a tool for inspiration. This year’s festival offers a fantastic showcase of international cinema which would be difficult to see otherwise. The festival offers a one-stop shop for anyone looking to be astounded, entertained and educated by the magical world of cinema.”
ANWEN HURT “I was delighted to become a patron of Derby Film Festival after attending last year’s tribute to my husband, Sir John Hurt, as I had fond memories of visiting the 2014 festival with John. This year’s programme offers a wide selection of previously unseen international cinema including films from countries as diverse as Japan, Iran, Spain and Thailand. The festival also presents new films featuring acting greats including Bill Nighy, Saoirse Ronan, Sheila Hancock, and more. Derby Film Festival shows that it is never too late to be inspired by a trip to the cinema.”

THE BOOKSHOP S AT U RD AY 12T H M AY 7 : 00P M PG SPA IN / UK / GE R M AN Y 2017 112M D IR : I S ABE L C O I XE T It is 1959 and widow Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) has decided to open a bookshop, the very first in the sleepy and conservative coastal town of Hardborough. She stocks some of the best and most controversial literature of the times, including titles like Nabakov’s Lolita. This decision sends shockwaves through the local community, and she makes an enemy in Mrs Gamart (Patricia Clarkson) who sees herself as the queen of Hardborough’s cultural scene. But Florence, along with her ally Mr. Brundish (Bill Nighy), refuses to bend and a battle for the soul of the town breaks out. Julie Christie provides the narration to this enjoyable drama, which is a neat nod to her role in the film version of another tale about the power of books, Fahrenheit 451.
Recently widowed Edith (Sheila Hancock) decides to fulfil her lifelong dream of climbing a mountain. She heads to Scotland where she employs Jonny (Kevin Guthrie) to help her prepare for the gruelling task ahead. An unusual friendship is formed in this tale of triumph over adversity set amongst the stunning backdrop of the Highlands. Sheila Hancock seizes the opportunity of a rare cinematic lead role with gusto and the result is a drama that both moves and inspires. The Midweek Treat is QUAD’s weekly Wednesday afternoon matinee. Tickets are available for the discounted price of £7/ £6 and each screening is introduced by film lecturer David Leicester.

Portrait Of A Village was filmed over the course of a year during a period of national upheaval and questioning.
