Making art, film & digital media accessible to all
QUAD is 10 4-5
Welcome To a summer of fun, films and QUAD celebrations! This summer is probably going to be the most musical summer in history for QUAD as we erect our Summer Nights screens across the country and bring The Greatest Showman, Grease, Dirty Dancing and more musical goodies to outdoor cinema audiences. But we’re not neglecting our toe tapping QUAD audiences as the ABBA inspired musical sequel Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again arrives here in July - now with added Cher! In other non-musical news there are some great films of local interest as Derbyshire director Deborah Haywood brings her debut feature Pin Cushion, fresh from the international festival circuit to QUAD. Last but by no means least is a sequel to one of QUAD’s favourite films of recent years with Sicario 2: Solado. Little has been released about this film so far but if it is even 50% as good as the first film it’ll be fantastic.

A world class centre for all
Come and join us QUAD celebrates its 10th Birthday on 26th September 2018 and we’re hoping that customers can join us in some of the celebrations we are arranging over the next few months.
Celebrating 10 years
Between now and December we’ll be showing The Best of 10, a curated film season selected by film programmer Adam Marsh, with a film representing each QUAD year. We’re also asking customers for your favourite film for us to show on the big screen, so please get voting! Details on page 11. QUAD will revisit one of our opening exhibitions Bill Drummond’s The17, offering a chance to see friends, family, colleagues or even yourself among the 1,700 people who took part in this innovative project. Derby Festé will also celebrate 10 years of QUAD with a spectacular projection mapping event on 29th September.
Why where we started is still important – 10 years on When QUAD opened we made a conscious decision that the people of Derby, rather than dignitaries, would be the first to use the building and our first exhibitions would reflect them. Jane and Louise Wilson’s exhibition in the gallery reflected on the industrial history of the city and migration of communities whilst The17, programmed by Bill Drummond in the corridors brought together diverse groups of people from across the city to take part in a unique musical experience and an exhibition of photographs of the groups. The opening weekend is why we are here – to make art, film and digital media accessible to all and throughout the last ten years we have strived to continue to push boundaries and raise ambition and aspirations.
4
There are too many highlights to mention; major events like FORMAT International Photography festival, Derby Film Festival, Summer Nights Film Festival, stunning exhibitions and a hugely diverse film programme. Underpinning all of this is our commitment to education and participation and that has enabled us to work with people of all ages and from all communities, reaching out beyond our city walls but always remaining true and passionate about Derby. None of this could have been done without the massive hard work by the team here at QUAD, our stakeholders including Arts Council England and Derby City Council and of course the people who started this journey – you, our brilliant audience.
Look out for more birthday celebrations, offers and events - the best way to keep up to date with our activities is to sign up to the QUAD e-mail list and receive our weekly e-flyer: http://bit.ly/quadenews And for those who would like to celebrate with us a little bit more, the best way to show your support is by becoming a QUAD Member, see details on P38.
Thank you! Adam Buss, CEO QUAD’s opening day September 2008

Exhibitions Joey Holder
QUAD Young Advocates Open Call Exhibition
QUAD is pleased to present a new body of work and immersive installation by the Nottingham and London-based, internationally recognised artist Joey Holder. ‘Adcredo’ investigates the construction of belief in online networks, examining the rise of unjust ideologies and fantasies, and how these are capable of affecting our worldview. The advent of digital media has shown that the world is made up of a mass of circulating, disjointed and contradictory information. This multi-dimensional communications network can be easily manipulated by online groups and individuals, which can give rise to new narratives and ideologies. Using research from investigative journalism and social psychology the work takes the form of a speculative association, a corporation where ideologies are disseminated to manipulate people. Conspiracy theory, sci-fact and sci-fi, corporate and religious belief systems are woven together in this multi-dimensional work.
6
We live in a time of ‘hyperpolarisation’ where we think that people with different political or religious beliefs live in different worlds. Our beliefs are reaffirmed in social media echo chambers whereby abstract manipulation occurs through background algorithmic processes, pulling us further into rabbit holes and making atomized groups. The work operates by holding up multiple mirrors, reflecting different cultural sets of belief systems, to question the very foundations of what constitutes our world view. It uncovers personal journeys that lead to certain convictions and critique the platforms that pitch different belief systems against each other. www.joeyholder.com Produced in partnership with QUAD and Bloc Projects, Sheffield

Slice Through Derby 10 years on QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces 25th August – 21st October Throughout 2008, prior to QUAD’s opening, 100 groups of 17 people from around Derby took part in The17: Slice Through Derby. Renowned artist and musician Bill Drummond was invited to create a unique performance piece to celebrate QUAD and particularly its location in Derby, with members of the community. The 100 groups were recruited to take part in the project, which involved singing one note together for five minutes, then having a group photograph and video portrait taken. These 100 separate sound recordings were mixed together to create one huge piece of choral music, and everyone who took part in the project was invited to the performance event on the Market Place in August 2008, to hear the one and only playback of this recording before it was deleted.

Explore the conventions of storytelling and plot structure and discover how they are present in all stories. Whether you are thinking about writing, working on something or would simply like to get a broader perspective on how stories function, this workshop will provide you with valuable new tools. What makes a story a story? What elements do all plots contain? How can you find them and bring them out in your work? Whether you are writing short stories, novels or scripts, the beats, conventions and demands of every story are the same. In this one-day course, we will be looking at story frameworks such as the Three Act Structure and The Hero’s Journey. We will identify them in well-known stories and apply them to our own work.
