Join us for the 2018 autumn/winter season Autumn is traditionally a time when we reassess the past few months, and as we at QUAD have been looking back at the past, we continue to celebrate ten fantastic years which have seen the venue not only survive but thrive and to become “the hub of Derby’s creative centre” (to quote QUAD Patron John Tams) and become “absolutely ingrained within the soul of Derby” (Steve Hall, Derby Telegraph). But, moreover it is a big thanks to three million visitors that have made QUAD the venue that it is today. Our tenth anniversary celebrations continue with ‘the best of 10’ film season, including a ‘people’s choice’ in December. As the evenings get darker there is nothing nicer than a guilt free Sunday afternoon in the cinema and as always, a raft of excellent releases to take us up to the Oscars.
Venue
Autumn’s traditional bounty of courses offer a whole host of subject areas in film and literature, especially popular one day ‘tasters’ to give you a chance to discover something new. Our new VR season, launching in November features the internationally renowned artist Rebecca Allen, a pioneer in the artform, so do take the opportunity to explore the exhibitions and events which will be on offer. Your support
Behind the scenes
This is where you come in, we are constantly inspired by the insights and expertise of our audience and stakeholders including our fantastic board of trustees. The creative industries of which we are part of are one of the fastest growing industries in the UK, yet levels of funding reduce year on year meaning we have to increase income and reduce expenditure all the time. To give you an example of this journey so far we have increased audiences for films we present by 247% since 2009 and reduced our expenditure on utilities (gas, electricity, water) year on year for the last three years. Every year we need to save more and earn more to replace lost funding and this is where you can help. Donations, ticket sales, café bar purchases and gifts bought in the shop all help but I wanted to give you four other ways that you can really help us move forward.
How to help Become a QUAD member
Ten years of art, film and digital media for all We want to share with you what happens ‘behind the scenes’ here at QUAD and why we do what we do. Our tenth birthday has given us the opportunity to reflect on how much we have changed as an organisation as well as what we have achieved, not simply from a nostalgic point of view (although that has been fun!) but also to help us learn from what we have done thus far. Our focus is still to make ‘Art and Film accessible to all’ but also to include ‘digital media’ in the mix as this increasingly affects every part of our lives. All the conversations that happen here at QUAD start by thinking ‘what will this mean to our community?’ By community we mean everyone that already engages with us and crucially those that we feel could benefit from becoming part of what we do.
4
Bring a friend to QUAD who has never been before Ambition, passion and caring are three key elements of how we progress and inform everything we do here at QUAD, that we remain grounded in using the arts as a way of improving lives. Sometimes the most exciting things we discuss are to do with the non-front facing elements including how we can make the building more sustainable and reduce our impact on the environment, how we can make our programme more accessible to audiences with specific needs and how we can save money on the ‘nuts and bolts’ of what we do, so this money can be spent on phenomenal events like FORMAT, Derby Film Festival and the plethora of workshops, films and exhibitions that happen every day at QUAD.
“All the conversations that happen here at QUAD start by thinking ‘what will this mean to our community?’ ”
Try something new yourself, be it a visit to an exhibition, an evening course or a new type of film you have never experienced before Use your social media to talk about your experiences here, or whatever ways you have of communicating to your friends and colleagues
Thank you Finally, it would be remiss of me not to say THANK YOU to every single one of you who has visited us over the last 10 years, you are the reason we do what we do here’s to the next ten years! Adam Buss, QUAD CEO

QUAD Gallery 10th November 2018 – 3rd February 2019 This solo exhibition of new and existing work by the American artist and ‘digital art pioneer’ Rebecca Allen includes a new Virtual Reality (VR) commission for QUAD. Nearly 30 years ago Allen predicted our futuristic culture, writing in 1989 “…not only will people build highly detailed artificial worlds in the computer, but they will also create complex characters with “human-like” behaviour that will “live” in these artificial environments. These new worlds will be experienced by the viewer through high resolution displays and the viewer will be able to interact with these synthetic characters.” At the heart of Allen’s complex art-forms are give and take interactions by the viewer when inside the artist’s, responsive, visionary and uncanny Virtual Reality worlds. There are few other experiences that replicate the embrace of Allen’s unique language; a language half-way between gesture and thought.
Until 21st October 2018 QUAD Gallery This exhibition features a wonderfully hellish, nightmare landscape. Embedded into an imposing rock face – evoking the deep passage of time – are two large screens featuring well-known personalities, representing avatars that Holder has worked with across the project. CGI talking heads stand in for Kanye West, Donald Trump, and Vladimir Putin alongside otherworldly creatures drawn from Holder’s research into online networks and conspiracy theories.

Slice Through Derby 10 years on QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces Until 21st October The17: Slice Through Derby was a commission by musician and artist Bill Drummond and returns to QUAD ten years after it was first displayed. The exhibition was part of his innovative project which brought together 100 groups of 17 from in and around Derby to take part in a choir and performance directed by Drummond, with the support of collaborators Cally Callomon and John Hirst, which took place in the months prior to QUAD opening in 2008.
The exhibition at QUAD features recent VR artworks Inside and Tangle of Mind and Matter as well as a selection of works drawn from her astounding career, including the interactive large screen installation Bush Soul (#3) and the video Musique Non Stop, for electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk. Curated by Helen Starr, The Mechatronic Library and Peter Bonnell, Senior Curator, QUAD.

The Specious Present QUAD Gallery 10th November 2018 - 3rd February 2019 QUAD has commissioned the Latvian artist Zane Zelmene to produce a new, immersive digital installation titled ‘The Specious Present’, featuring new VR works inspired by the natural environment and landscape of the county of Derbyshire, specifically the Peak District – including the historic sites Arbor Stone Low Circle and Nine Ladies. Zelmene has scanned and filmed in these sites to create a VR experience of natural and man-made objects that touch upon local myths, stories and legends. Zelmene comments: “Inspired by megalithic art, ancient myths and modern
theories about stone circles this extended reality installation merges real and virtual worlds to create an immersive experience, where the viewer can interact with the space and time information of the specific sites from their own point of view.”

Digital Participation Artist in Residence 2018
QUAD’s Digital Participation Artist in Residence, Leila Johnston, will be exhibiting new work in QUAD’S Extra Gallery Spaces. The Sheffieldbased artist collaborated with Déda associate dancers, Daniel Longhurst and Megan Smith to create a new body of work, that is in part inspired by a workshop about dance and new technologies that Leila co-created with dancer Rosa Cisneros for Derbyshire Healthcare in-patients. Touching on themes of transformation, collaboration and hope in the face of uncertainty, this ambient installation comprises of chained LED matrices running film off Raspberry Pi. The LEDs are then diffused through perspex panels to create a dreamlike effect. Leila has completed residencies in the UK and abroad and has exhibited at The Lowry in Manchester and at a number of festivals. She is Digital Curator at the Site Gallery, Sheffield.

Glenn Close gives a truly masterful performance in award-winning Swedish filmmaker Bjorn Runge’s hugely enjoyable new drama. Close plays Joan Castleman, an elegant woman who has spent forty years sacrificing her own talent, dreams and ambitions to support her charismatic husband Joe (Jonathan Pryce) and his high-profile literary career, until she reaches a turning point.
