CASE STUDY Aluminum: Improving Aluminum Hot Rolling Cooling Ability QUAKERAL® CH 540 The Challenge
The Benefits
A global manufacturer of 3xxx and 4xxx series aluminum alloy clad coils was experiencing issues with their rolling oil in the aluminum hot rolling process resulting in:
By using QUAKERAL® CH 540, dramatic improvements were achieved:
issues in the emulsion causing a terrible smell • Bacterial especially in the summer season surface defects were frequent due to emulsion • Coil staining
and uneven surface quality especially when • Unstable rolling their highest quality alloys
The Solution
consumption to 0.6 kg/ton without additive • Reduced additions
• Decreased free fatty acid to avoid bacterial issues emulsion management to keep the system • Improved clean
• Hybrid ester to keep lubrication for rolling all alloys the quality issues and was able to meet the • Eliminated long plate requirements for surface quality which not previously feasible with their existing system
Quaker Houghton introduced QUAKERAL CH 540, a specially formulated lubricant suitable for the hot rolling process and the type of alloys being processed. The product was chosen due to its cooling ability performance in comparable mill types with similar oil parameters. ®
Ultimately, Quaker Houghton was able to improve the hot coil quality and reduce the overall fluid consumption.
The Product QUAKERAL® CH 540 is an aluminum hot rolling oil with excellent lubrication properties and maximized lubricity. It provides stable emulsion performance for rolling different clad alloys without bite refusal and slipping issues.
