Whatever encapsulates the phrase, “Harmony Lifestyle,” we will pick the top three submissions and have the Harmony residents vote via Facebook (keeping the author’s name anonymous). The winner will get a $50 gift certificate to one of the Harmony businesses, winners choice. Harmony Community Church Welcomes Interim Pastor Dr. Danny Purvis! Dr Purvis, please tell us a little about you and your background: I am originally from South Carolina where I met my wife when we were in the first grade together. We have been married for 28 years and have four children. Shelby-27; Kylie21; Jackson 18; Savannah 16. For the last 20 years I have been a chaplain in the United States Navy. Ten of those years were with the United States Marine Corps. I deployed in support of both Operation Iraqi Freedom…and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan). My education is as follows: • BA English; Carson-Newman College • MDiv; Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary • ThM; Princeton Theological Seminary • PhD; Regent University Upon retiring from the Navy in December 2016, we felt God leading us to settle in Central Florida.

What have you learned about Harmony in the short time you have been here? I am still getting to know the area but there seems to be a very palpable sense of community among the folks here. The location is ideal for a myriad of reasons and we are already feeling very welcomed by the folks we have come to know in this short amount of time. What can someone new to Harmony Community Church expect to hear and see during a Sunday service? My philosophy of ministry is relatively simple. My driving desire is to know God and to make Him known. Everything that is done in the service is filtered through that prism. It is called a worship service for a very important reason…that is, it is designed to direct worship to the One that loves us more than we could ever hope to understand. The music, the atmosphere, and the preached Word are all designed to fulfill the dictates of that paradigm. I am much more a teacher than a preacher and my goal is simply to teach God’s Word…unapologetically and unambiguously. His Word is the only revelation of Him that we have…so it will be taught openly and

honestly. I also, of course, try to make the Cross an extremely vital part of any message. Jesus’ act of redemption is the only hope for a world steeped in hopelessness. That’s why the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus is central to all that we do. In the original Greek language, the word “gospel” literally is translated as “good news.” It is my goal to pronounce that good news at every opportunity. I hope people will feel welcomed, at home, and encouraged when they attend. But more than anything, I hope they will be able to walk away from the service feeling as if they know God just a bit more than they did before. Anything else you would like me to mention or highlight? I really want Harmony Community Church to be what the name implies. A church that reaches out and loves and serves Harmony with the goal of knowing Jesus and making Him known. Again, A big Welcome to Dr. Danny Purvis with Harmony Community Church. Meeting at the Harmony High School auditorium, Sundays at 10am. n

The HROA Election Isn’t Over… By Steve Berube President, Harmony Residential Owners Association

J

ust Kidding!! Yes it is and your new Owner-Controlled Board consists of Jeanine Corcoran, Jason Meisel and myself. This HROA election was significant because for the first time, owners have operational (and thereby financial) control of the Association; this is important because though the most-recent developer (Starwood) ceased funding Association operations several years ago, they still had majority control of the Board and the finances. I was recently asked why/how a developer is/was in control of a “homeowners” association. For a clear answer, one has to look back in history to the beginning of Harmony when the-then developer started the process of developing raw land. In our case, that developer set up a CDD which issued bonds to fund the construction of the public facilities; in those early days, the CDD Board of Supervisors was developerappointed. As Harmony grew, owners slowly replaced appointees on that Board. Around 2008, owners took majority control of the Board of the CDD. Coincident with the beginning of private facilities (homes) that developer adopted a set of covenants which became the Covenants & Restrictions that we still use today. These C&R’s become the mission statement of the corporation which is the HROA. Of course, all this costs money, as does the operation of the HROA until it gets large enough to be self-funding. All those costs are paid by the developer so therefore, they maintain control of the Board. Like the CDD, as Harmony grew, owners replaced appointees on the Board but at a much slower rate. Several years ago, Starwood’s focus shifted slightly and so did their financial support of the Association which forced a radical shift in how funds were budgeted, collected and spent. In effect, we were on our own financially. But, Starwood still held a majority on the Board and thereby control of operations and finances. Recognizing that conflict, they established the Member Advisory Committee

(MAC) which consisted of three owners who oversaw much of the day-to-day operations; but, the reality was that things were under Starwood control. Fast-forward to now and the sale of Harmony by Starwood. As the sale progressed, the new developer (Sun Terra) indicated that they did not want control of the HROA which Starwood could have just passed on to them. So, Starwood had to pass control (through adding a seat) of the HROA to the owners which necessitated an election, even though one had just been held a few months before which saw Jeanine and myself elected. To avoid any appearance of impropriety, both Jeanine and myself became candidates in the just-completed election which saw ourselves and Jason elected. So, that accounts for three seats; the other two were held by Starwood until the next day when the sale of Harmony was completed. At that time, the Starwood folks resigned their positions in favor of Sun Terra personnel who will be appointed soon. That’s the history right up until now. Since the election, Jeanine, Jason and myself have been busy with a number of items including seeking a significant reduction in management costs, scheduling a complete audit of the finances, setting up a meeting schedule, forming a “resident advisory committee” and a number of other operational details which are to be expected with such a shift in behind-thescenes activities. We also are seeking input on how to achieve some sort of “central information sharing” function; a website is a possibility as is a Facebook page (yes, I know—another one??!!) and hopefully, the resident advisory committee can make this one of their early tasks. Lastly, this is YOUR association and we welcome YOUR input, so, feel free to contact Jeanine at Jeanine@corcoranconnection.com, Jason at webhedd2000@yahoo.com or myself at spberube@earthlink.net. Thanks for reading and see you next month. n

DID YOU KNOW? By Kerul Kassel PHD Hamony CDD Board Member

D

ID YOU KNOW that Harmony was designed to promote the peaceful coexistence of human and animal residents within the community while striking a balance between the preservation, use and enjoyment of Harmony’s natural areas? While retaining natural areas, Harmony is part of a human-dominated landscape where our actions profoundly affect the welfare of wild animals. We are so lucky that we have so many fantastic places to hang out close to nature in Harmony. This month is about Favorite Places, and while there are many to choose from, limited space means I’ll highlight just a few here, leaving others for a later article. We’ll start with Lakeshore Park, which has many wonderful places to hang out and relax, and to get active. My favorite spot is the boardwalk to and the swing on the

10 Harmony Life Magazine | October 2017

reflection platform at Buck Lake, relaxing and delightful in any season, affording a wide view of the lake, and some shade from the pergola and trees. The fishing platform, a little farther along the park walking path, also has a beautiful boardwalk leading to it, and benches for hanging out. The benches at the Human Sundial and the Adirondack chairs at the backside of Long Pond are picturesque and delightful, right off the walkway. Did you know that most neighborhoods in Harmony have pocket parks, which are common areas for all residents? That means that you can hang out in them even if you don’t live on one of the streets nearby. There are pretty pocket parks with beautiful landscaping and benches on Sedges Lane off Buttonbush Loop, at Dahoon Holly Court by Brackenfern, at Beargrass Road

by Primrose Willow, at Buck Lane by Beargrass, at Blazing Star, and off Oak Glen (in the Estates). One of the nicest features of Harmony is Long Park, along the golf course side of Cat Brier and Five Oaks Drive. This park has landscaped pavilions, benches, Adirondack chairs, art, and garden beds at intervals along its length, and now that the trees are maturing, lots of shade and bird life. It’s a beautiful place for a walk or a break from one. Soon to come will be a linear park along Butterfly Drive that will connect Lakeshore Park to Butterfly Trail (and it’s real-Florida trails), a walker’s dream. The new park will feature an alluring curving sidewalk, sizable Live Oak trees, and benches. Check out the places you haven’t been! Get out and enjoy some of the many easily accessible outdoor delights of Harmony n

Required Minimum Distribution Rules for Inherited IRAs By Jason Flowers CPA, CFA, CFP, EA, CTFA

T

he penalty for failing to take a required minimum distribution (RMD) from an IRA is steep… 50% steep. This hefty penalty applies not only to IRAs you own, but those you inherit. Distribution rules for beneficiaries of inherited IRAs vary based on your relationship to the original owner of the IRA, as well as, whether the original owner died before their own required beginning date for RMDs or on/after their own date for RMDs. In this article we will explore the rules for RMDs based on 2 of the 3 possible relationship categories as well as the timing of original owner’s death. DESIGNATED BENEFICIARY IS SPOUSE ONLY If the original IRA owner dies on or after their required beginning date the spouse may choose one of the following three options: 1. Treat the inherited IRA as their own… i.e. delay RMDs until their own required beginning date. 2. Begin to distribute the assets within the inherited IRA over their own life expectancy. 3. Distribute the assets over the life of the original owner of the IRA (This option makes sense if your deceased spouse was younger than you and you are close to or already at the required beginning date for RMDs). If the original IRA owner dies before their required beginning date the spouse may choose one of the following three options: 1. Treat the inherited IRA as their own… i.e. delay RMDs until their own required beginning date. 2. Distribute the entire balance by the end of the 5th year following the original owner’s death.

3. Distribute the assets over the life spouse that inherited the IRA with the 1st distribution occurring in the year the original owner would have turned 70 ½. DESIGNATED BENEFICIARY IS A NON-SPOUSE INDIVIDUAL If the original IRA owner dies on or after their required beginning date the nonspouse beneficiary(ies) may distribute the assets: 1. Over a period of time based on the younger of 1.) beneficiary’s age or 2.) Owner’s age at birthday in year of death. 2. If multiple non-spouse beneficiaries inherit an IRA, the distributions should be based on the age of the oldest beneficiary for all beneficiaries (unless separate accounts are created). 3. If the inherited IRA is divided into separate accounts for multiple beneficiaries by December 31st of the year following the owner’s death the Inherited IRA can be distributed over the lives of each respective beneficiary. If the original IRA owner dies before their required beginning date the nonspouse beneficiary(ies) may withdraw the entire balance by the end of the 5th year following the original owner’s death. n

If you need help with assessing the distribution rules for required minimum distributions of an inherited IRA, please reach out to Larry Herring CPAs and Consultants. Visit us online at www. herringcpa.com or call at 407-647-7777 to set up a free consultation.
