MEET THE

GONZALEZ FAMILY What is… Your name? Louis Gonzalez Your spouse’s name? Patty Gonzalez Your daughter's name? Jenelle Coolidge Your grandchildren's names? Maddy and Max When did you move to Harmony? June 2018 What street do you live on? Cupseed Lane What do you love most about Harmony? Peace and Quite and the feeling of a small town from the past.

postal workers and by God’s grace we have not had to work in over five years.

Right now our non-profit work is baby sitting grandkids and what we give to the church.

What is a good story about Harmony? There is no one good story. Just that the living is easy every day is a good story.

Do you have a cause or business that you would like to promote? Yes, we promote Jesus as our personal savior. His website is basically the Bible itself.

What is unusual or unique about Harmony, in comparison to your previous home? We are isolated but not in the middle of nowhere. Half way between Orlando and Melbourne.

What do you do for fun? Relaxing, avoiding pain, and trying to stay healthy.

What is your favorite weekend activity? When you are retired, every day is a weekend... but the usual: going to church, Disney and the beaches.

What is the last movie that you have seen in the theatre? It is hard to catch a good one. I don’t even remember the last one, they are so ordinary.

Is there a neighbor experience you are most proud of? Not really. People keep to themselves, say hi and go about their business. If you seek friends you will find them.

What is your favorite TV Show? I mostly watch sports but let's go with “King of Queens” and “Blue Bloods.” Patty likes “America’s Got Talent.”

What do you miss most? Friends and family, the cool weather and low humidity of Washington and the Cuban food of Miami.

Are there any recommendations for other neighbors? Enjoy the amenities and functions you have year round, as there are plenty of things to do. The pool is awesome.

What is your background? We are both retired

Do you do any charity or non-profit work?

What else should we know about you or your family? We are out here just chilling. Like they say, if you do the things you need to do when you need to do them, then someday you can do the things you want to do when you want to do them. All by God’s grace of course. Amen. n

What are your grandkids’ favorite things about Harmony? The grandkids and ourselves love going to the pool and riding our bikes. Where did you move from? We moved from Seattle, Washington but met and lived most of our lives in Miami, FL.

BUYING vs RENTING By Jeanine Corcoran

“C

an I afford to buy?” The real question to ask is, “Can I afford to continue renting?” Most renters don’t realize the amount of money they pay over a period of several years. An average rent of $1,800 a month over one year is $21,600 and over 10 years is $216,000! Let’s look at how much house you can purchase in Harmony for $1,800 a month.

Firefighters. Also, there are county bond programs and state programs to help buyers. USDA loans are also available for our Harmony area and that loan DOES NOT require a down payment. When considering purchasing a new home or a resale home, it’s important to have a Real Estate Professional and a Mortgage Professional to represent you and help you get the most for your money. Don’t do it alone!

$275,000 Purchase Price $8,250 3.5% down payment $265,375 Loan Amount

Seriously consider the money you are paying when renting versus paying a mortgage—paying your own mortgage or paying someone else’s mortgage. With interest rates still historically low at or below 5% on a 30-year fixed mortgage, why rent? Now is a great time to buy.

HARMONY CDD MEETING NOTES

T

By Steve Berube Chairman HCDD and President HROA

he Harmony CDD Board of Supervisors held its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, March 28, 2019; we were joined by about eight residents. Regular readers know that we have been discussing obtaining Buck Lake and about six acres of adjoining land from the Developer in exchange for the CDD absorbing his fee obligations on that land. Last month the Board charged me with negotiating with the Developer to assemble an agreement covering the myriad of details associated with such a transaction. In short, these discussions have gone down many paths and taken many turns. Compounded by the Developer’s two week vacation, we haven’t advanced very far, but we have put several large issues behind us. Speaking of big issues: In neighborhoods I & J (South & East Lakes), it came to light that the CDD was paying for operation and maintenance of street lights that the Developer had purchased. That has been the de facto method of how streetlights work going all the way back to Neighborhood F. What is different here is that The Lakes are private, gated communities with both the streets and sidewalks deeded to their respective HOAs.

simple oversight—but is one more point of discussion with the Developer. SERVELLO indicated that tree-trimming is wrapping up and mulching is in its early stages. They also indicated that they want to extend their contracts which expire on September 30th which is as expected. You might have noticed some white “Conservation Area” signs around Harmony’s perimeter as well as within along wooded/wetlands areas. Over time, these brushy areas have slowly encroached on what were grassy areas. Also, some areas have bushes and trees which grow steadily taller with limbs that hang further encroaching on grassy areas. The point is that left alone, this growth will march inward and swallow up improved land. So, we asked SERVELLO to spend some time pushing it all back to the borders previously established by those white signs. We awarded Austin Environmental a multiyear contract to monitor those very same conservation areas for invasive plant growths. The original quote was for $17,900 but after some negotiation, we obtained the very same services for $11,900. This monitoring is not

optional; rather, it is required by S. FL. Water Management District to prevent unchecked invasive weed growth. This monitoring requirement is tied to my request to SERVELLO to push all the excess growth back simply because things are harder to monitor and control if not kept contained. We approved a $2600 quote to install a semirigid, rubberized mulch mat area around the benches in the dog park. This should alleviate the destruction of the grass there caused by dogs visiting their owners sitting on the benches. The Board declined to advance my request to provide community-wide sidewalk cleaning though Supervisor Bokunic, who joined us by phone, was distracted during the discussion and came back after the discussion to say that, had he heard, he would have seconded my motion as he is in favor of this community service. We will be shaping the Fiscal 2020 Budget at a Workshop on April 25th at 4PM; that will be followed by the regular meeting at 6PM. Thanks for reading—see you next month!! n

On the surface, the problem is that the CDD would be using public monies to maintain private property, which is a no-no. However, reading carefully into the plat maps deeding those areas to the CDD, this problem was contemplated and the deed includes a rightof-way easement in favor of the CDD which puts those lights in the public domain. Additionally, both neighborhoods are easily accessible by anyone so the general public can benefit from the lights. That determination satisfied the concern but led to another one related to East Lakes and that involves the landscape maintenance and irrigation. It seems that the Developer already deeded the land to the CDD but has not installed the needed water meter nor connected the irrigation system to the MAXICOMM irrigation controller. As this is this Developer’s first time “turning over” a neighborhood, we are attributing this to a April 2019 | Harmony Life Magazine 7

DID YOU KNOW? By Kerul Kassel PHD Hamony CDD Board Member

D

ID YOU KNOW that Harmony was designed to promote the peaceful coexistence of human and animal residents within the community while striking a balance between the preservation, use and enjoyment of Harmony’s natural areas? Underlying these objectives are the values of fostering a respect for the land, the protection of wildlife and the sensible use and enjoyment of Harmony’s abundant natural and manmade amenities by its residents. Did you know that you are likely to meet or see dozens of species of wild animals in Harmony, daytime or night? Many people are not used to being around wildlife and are not sure how to handle the situation, so this month we will talk about the best ways to respond to nearby wildlife that you might see during the daytime. During daylight hours you’ll definitely see lizards (not so scary), and sometimes snakes (scary!!). There are at least 29 lizard species in Florida. They eat bugs like ants, mealworms, and cockroaches, so leave them alone to do their job! Most of our snake species are harmless, like the black racer and the rat snake, that also eat pests. We do have some poisonous snakes, so it’s always best to keep your distance. If you are walking in tall grass, or if you see a snake and want it to go away, stomp your feet so the snake will feel the vibrations and go the other way. Some species, like the water moccasin (also known as the cottonmouth), found in fields and near water, have a reputation for being aggressive, but in reality, they rarely bite humans. They will, however, stand their ground, unlike many nonvenomous water snakes that flee from threats, so back away and leave the area immediately. Sandhill cranes and turkeys are frequently seen around Harmony. We can’t stress enough not to feed them! It’s not only illegal, it’s dangerous for the birds and for you. Cranes have really large beaks than can inflict serious injury, and when they get used to being fed they are not shy about asking for a handout. Turkeys have spurs on their legs, and when feeling threatened and cornered will use them!

COURTESY KERUL KASSEL

Did you know that if you look directly at wildlife they usually consider it a threat and will flee, but if you pass by without looking at them they will usually stay in place? There is an art to observing inconspicuously. Be still or keep walking in the same direction as when you saw them, at the same pace. Look away from them, only glancing very briefly at them. If you’re wearing a hat, angle the brim down low so your eyes are somewhat hidden by the brim. Last year an alligator was pulled from a residential area pond and killed. Reports were that it was just sunning itself on the bank, but was a larger alligator. Someone reported it and FWC came out to “remove” it. A couple of years earlier, an alligator that people had “fed” through fishing was taken. That alligator paid the ultimate price for human misbehavior. If you see people feeding wildlife, please take a photo or video and report the incident to Fish and Wildlife at myfwc.com/contact/wildlife-alert. We are blessed with an abundance of green space and wild creatures. Keep a respectful distance, stay hidden, even, and enjoy their presence for longer. n April 2019 | Harmony Life Magazine 11

FINDING YOUR TRIBE

By Stephanie Milfeld

I

help hold each other accountable, check in when we haven’t seen each other post in a while online, are understanding of each others’ struggles and are BEYOND supportive in so many ways.

’m sure you have seen or heard this term that has become ever so popular in recent years. Your Tribe, find your tribe, #mytribe... but what is a tribe? Who is in your tribe? Why do you need a tribe? Am I already in a tribe and don’t know it? Can I be in more than one tribe? These are all valid questions but let’s get down to the importance of a tribe. There comes a point in your life that you begin to weed out acquaintances and become more grateful for the people you surround yourself with both near and far. Do you need to talk to these people daily? No. Weekly? Nope. Monthly? Not at all, because through it all you will still remain friends. These people in your tribe are here for the long run. They understand, relate, they support you, they offer an ear when you need to vent, and love you for YOU and all of you!

Luckily I have a couple of different tribes myself. One is my close friends/Mom tribe. These are women I have gone to high school and college with. We have been through the ringer in our friendships and they are stronger than ever. We talk to each other mostly through text because well, kids can sometimes make a good conversation impossible. Is it just me or do kids need

Finally, I have a new tribe that meets at Vanessa’s Coffee Shop on Friday mornings at 9am! These women, some business owners and some not, are helping each other with personal growth, a positive perspective and goal setting.

EVERYTHING and ALL attention the second you are on the phone? These women and I, whether they have kids or not, always seem to pick up right where we left off (social media also helps us keep up to date with things going on in each others’ lives). My other tribe is my online workout tribe. Now many of these women I have never ever met in person (and some live in my community). We

If you are new to our community and looking for somewhere to expand or start your tribe, check out these: • Every Friday, 9am: Vanessa’s Coffee Shop • First Wednesday of the Month, 9:30am: Mommy and Me Yoga at Z and Q – A Children’s Boutique • Second Tuesday of the Month, 10am: Mommy Tone Up Class @ Z and Q – A Children’s Boutique • Coffee Co-Op: Put on by the St. Cloud Chamber at City Hall • St. Cloud Library: Story Times There are so many more, but this gives you a start! Hope to see you at one of them! n
