MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS: THE YOUNGS Where did you move from? Me, Kissimmee (and before that, England). Melbourne (and before that, Washington State).
Is there a neighbor experience you are most proud of? There’s a lot of reciprocal neighbourly activity in Harmony.
What do you miss most? Our families thousands of miles away.
Are there any recommendations for other neighbors? Talk to each other in real life rather than on the internet. We’re all friends here.
What is… Your name? Cherry Young. Your spouse’s name? Rick Young. When did you move to Harmony? 2012 me, 2014 Rick. What street do you live on? Beargrass. What do you love most about Harmony? Nature, community, and that it’s a little separate from the outside world.

What is a good story about Harmony? Our story began when we married at Cat Lake at sunrise almost three years ago. What is unusual or unique about Harmony, in comparison to your previous home? Its quiet peacefulness and nature. We both lived in busy urban areas previously. What is your favorite weekend activity? We don’t really have a favourite weekend activity; since we’re retired, all days are like weekends to us!
Do you do any charity or non-profit work? Nothing specific. I enjoy helping out when I can, whether it’s the nature and animal committee, or anything else. What do you do for fun? Travel, exercise, art, crafts, photographing Harmony’s nature, taking the Harmony boats out on the lake, joining in the Harmony community activities like the trivia evenings. What is your favorite TV Show? I like murder mystery and mayhem, Rick likes documentaries. What else should we know about you or your family? Rick’s quiet and I’m not. :) n

What is your background? As I said, I'm from England, and I have a 29 year old son from my previous marriage to my late husband. I worked for the last 10 years at Windsor Castle in the Royal Household and have met the Queen several times. Rick retired from the military, including 16 years in the Air Force, and also worked for quite a few years for Boeing in Seattle.

MEET DANNY PURVIS
M
y name is Danny Purvis and I am the new lead pastor at Harmony Community Church (HCC). And while I may be the new lead pastor, I am not new at HCC. I was tabbed as the interim pastor here at HCC in September of 2017. During the process of looking for a new lead pastor it became clear to myself and the church leadership that it would be best for me to stay on. I can’t tell you what an honor it is to be associated with HCC and I am thrilled by the new direction we are headed here in the immediate future. By way of background, I have been married to my wife Kimberly (whom I met when we were six years old) for 28 years. We have four amazing kids: Shelby, 27 and lives in Charleston SC with her husband JJ and is expecting our first grandchild. Kylie, 22, is our second born and inherited her dad’s Disney passion. She currently works at Hollywood Studios. Our only boy, Jackson, 19, is currently an engineering major at Florida Polytechnic and is working towards his dream of becoming an Imagineer. And lastly, Savannah, 16, is just about to begin

her senior year in High School (we have homeschooled all of our kids at one point or another). All of us are thrilled about being at HCC and are looking forward to God doing amazing things. As for myself, I retired in December, 2016 as a Navy Chaplain after 20 years of active service. Upon leaving the Navy, we didn’t know specifically where God was going to lead us…but we knew it would be in Central Florida. For more than 20 years we have spent every year here at Disney for our family vacations. No matter what chaos we were enduring with moves and deployments, we knew we would take time as a family at the World. In a way, our kids grew up at Disney World. In fact, two of our kids can proudly claim that their first Disney trip took place whole they were in their mother’s womb. Yep…we’re that dedicated. As far as education is concerned, I have a BA in English; a Master’s of Divinity; a Master’s of Theology; and a PhD in Organizational Leadership. I like to tell people I have more degrees than a thermometer…for what it’s
worth. I am a Doctor…but not the kind of Doctor that can do anybody any good.☺ I want HCC to be THE church for the community of Harmony and Twin Lakes. I want it to be a place where God’s grace, mercy and forgiveness are taught and lived out in all that we do. I want HCC to be a good neighbor to Harmony/Twin Lakes and a church that can be counted on by the people who live in this wonderful community. I want the Gospel of Christ to be seen, taught and lived out. And I want us here at HCC to do two simple things: To know Him…and to make Him known. I cordially invite you to join us for worship on Sundays at 10:00 am at Harmony High School auditorium. If you haven’t tried us…drop in one Sunday. I would love to meet you. FIDUCIARY DUTY By Steve Berube Chairman HCDD and President HROA
F
iduciary duties in a financial sense exist to ensure that those who manage other people’s money act in their beneficiaries’ best interest, rather than serving their own interests. A fiduciary duty is the highest standard of care in equity or law. Homeowners Associations, including the one governing Harmony, are regulated under Florida Statute, specifically FS Chapter 720. 720.3033 covers Officers & Directors and specifies: “he or she will faithfully discharge his or her fiduciary responsibility to the association’s members.” Additionally, FS 720.303 specifies the Powers & Duties of an association: “The powers & duties of an association include those set forth in this chapter and, except as expressly limited or restricted, those set forth in the governing documents. After control is obtained from Developer, association may institute, maintain, settle, or appeal actions or hearings on behalf of members concerning matters of interest to members, including, but not limited to, the common areas: roof or structure of a building, or other improvements for which association is responsible; mechanical, electrical or plumbing elements serving an improvement for which association is responsible; representations of developer pertaining to any existing or proposed commonly used facility; and protesting ad valorem taxes on common facilities.” The reason I bring these legalities to your attention is singular and highly visible: The Social Committee (SC) Budget. As you might have heard or read elsewhere, the Board set the Fiscal Year 2019 budget recently; this budget included an approximately 25% CUT in annual dues and included a 40% INCREASE in the SC Budget—increasing it from the current year’s $25,000 to the 2019 $35,000. What’s the problem that has created all the consternation amongst some? Well, the SC requested $71,280 for the coming year—so, some viewed the $35,000 as being a budget cut rather than the fact that the budget
actually increased. Some SC members were upset enough that they resigned. It is important to note that the dues cut DID NOT factor into the SC Budget limitation. So, let’s go back to Fiduciary Duty. The $35,000 allocation represents about 37% of the $95,000 that your dues will generate this year. Also, if one reads the Statutes regarding Powers & Duties of an association, nowhere does it mention being allowed to fund activities such as the Social Committee provides. And, neither do our Documents provide for the ability to fund such activities. So, funding such activities remains in a very grey area. Nonetheless, such funding began under Developer control (note the text regarding representations of Developer pertaining to any commonly owned facility) and have now continued under resident control. Despite about 1/8 of residents wanting more spending (based on a Facebook survey) one has to remember that 7/8 of residents either don’t want or don’t care. In deciding these things regarding fiduciary duty and state-regulated Powers & Duties, it is hard to reconcile how one can devote (and defend) spending more than 37% of income on Activities when said Activities are not specifically authorized under state law. So, now you know how these very difficult to make decisions came about. While changes within the Social Committee are obviously happening, we are working on several things that we hope will allow events and activities to continue at the level you are accustomed to and perhaps even increase in frequency. We know that many in the Community enjoy and appreciate these functions and I can assure you that we will do the best we can within the constraints that exist. ID YOU KNOW that Harmony was designed to foster tolerance, respect, and understanding of all living things, to provide opportunities for Harmony residents to view, hear, and interact
way, and to create and provide educational activities which will foster a community-wide land ethic and promote future land stewardship? One of the resident-initiated amenities in Harmony is our Community Garden. Did you know that you can rent a plot there for a reasonable annual grow vegetables, fruit trees, and more. An all-volunteer resident committee manages the guidelines and logistics of getting a garden plot, which entails a small fee to cover the cost of keeping up fencing (deer and other animals
rest of the country? Summertime in Florida is usually rest time for our soil, and our garden labors (except weeding!!) as the temperatures are too high for most vegetables except okra, watermelon, sweet potatoes, and black-eyed peas. When most of the USA is putting their garden plots to bed for the winter, we are just planting ours! Here are some good reasons to get a plot in the Community Garden: You’ll get to know neighbors you might not otherwise see. You’ll get some fresh air and exercise in the beautiful outdoors, connecting to the land and the soil. Gardening can reduce stress, improve your mood, and provide veggies you might not otherwise try from the supermarket. You’ll be contributing to Harmony’s green values…both sustainability certainly not least, you’ll be more likely to have a healthier diet! Research shows that people who grow veggies are more likely to include them in their meals. from each other and gardening principles and practices, and provides through gardening.
