COVER STORY

What is your background? We were both born and raised in Central Florida. Graduated from Osceola High School. High school sweethearts, married in 2008. What is a good story about Harmony? We love how every time there is a crisis, our community bands together and shows their love and support for their neighbors What is unusual or unique about Harmony, in comparison to your previous home? The community. In our previous neighborhood no one communicated with anyone else. There was zero sense of community. What is your favorite weekend activity? We enjoy fishing around in the ponds, biking, and hanging out with our friends. Is there a neighbor experience you are most proud of? We were blessed to be able to give one neighbor a full bedroom set and the other neighbor a new couch set. We enjoy being a blessing to people and help whenever we are able to. So I wouldn’t necessarily say it was a “proud moment”; it is more that we are blessed to be able to be helpful.

NALLEY FAMILY What is… Your name? Ryan & Shawntae Nalley Your dog's name? Halo the Dachshund Your bird's name? Gracie the Parrotlet When did you move to Harmony? January 2016. What street to you live on? Clay Brick Road. What do you love most about Harmony? We enjoy the small town feel. Holidays are our favorite. We love to see the Halloween and Christmas decorations, as well as all the trick-ortreaters out and about. It feels like a scene from a Hallmark movie. What are your kids’ favorite things about Harmony? No kids yet. Where did you move from? St. Cloud. What do you miss most? Nothing, we love Harmony. 2 Harmony Life Magazine | August 2020

What do you do for fun? When we aren’t doing Scentsy events and leading our Team BARtenders ,which is currently around 105 teamies, Ryan plays the electric guitar on our church worship team and is an amazing artist. Shawntae runs a Bible Doodling group on Facebook. You can check that out and join if you are interested. You will find it located under “Bible Doodling for Beginners Ministry & Fellowship” on Facebook. Shawntae also enjoys canvas painting and playing with their bird. What is the last movie that you have seen in the theatre? We watched “Aladdin” before the theaters shut down. What is your favorite TV Show? “King of Queens.” Who is your role model and why? I think it is safe to say that our “role model” is Jesus. Although we know we will always fall short, He is certainly a perfect example of what we should strive for. What else should we know about you or your family? If you are ever looking for us, you can most likely find us at Mike & Shauna Scarborough’s house. They are the ones that brought us to Harmony. Our extended family. n

6 Ways to Ensure Your Kids Are Ready for the School Year By Monica Guirguis, DO Pediatrics

T

he start of the school season is upon us. It’s time to consider some of the health and wellness issues that arise when kids return to the classroom. While returning to school during the COVID-19 pandemic will be different for children, it is important to reassure them that simple precautions can keep them safe. Key points to discuss include: • Social distancing may be required. Remind your child not to hug classmates. • Washing hands frequently is the single most-important way to reduce transmission of most viruses. • Wearing a mask can help protect your child and others. In addition to studying hard and staying safe, here are 6 back-to-school tips to consider:

Every school year comes with new challenges and experiences. It’s important to talk to your child frequently and openly about what they’re feeling. Empathize with their feelings and be mindful that worrying or feeling overwhelmed may be completely normal experiences.

2. Make Sure Kids are Up-To-Date on Medical Care

It’s recommended that every child get an annual physical exam. This allows their pediatrician to address health problems, screen for potential issues and administer vaccines. Through this preventive approach, you can work together to achieve your child’s maximum potential.

3. Start Each Morning with a Healthy Breakfast

Studies show children who consume a nutritious breakfast each morning have increased energy and better concentration. Avoid sugary cereals and greasy fast food. A 6 Harmony Life Magazine | August 2020

healthy breakfast should include a protein, vegetable and/or fruit, and a small portion of carbohydrates.

4. Don’t Forget the Importance of Sleep

Kids need 8 to 12 hours of sleep each night. Surprisingly, preparing for a good night’s sleep begins during the daytime. Make sure your kids avoid caffeinated beverages, get lots of physical activity, limit screen use and discontinue all electronic devices at least two hours before bedtime.

5. Create a HomeworkFriendly Environment

A home environment that best mimics a school environment is ideal for helping your child concentrate after school. Provide a dedicated quiet place with a flat desk or table to study at. This is preferred over their bed or a couch where they may feel too relaxed to stay focused.

Dr. Monica Guirguis

6. Remember to Celebrate

Try to enjoy the moment! Plan a celebratory dinner, enjoy some music together or sit down and have everyone list their goals and hopes for the year. To learn more or schedule a physical exam, visit OrlandoHealth.com/BacktoSchool

JULY CDD MEETING DETAILS By Steve Berube Chairman HCDD and President HROA

T

he Harmony Community Development District (CDD) held its regular monthly meeting on July 30, 2020. As has become customary, this meeting was held virtually with all Supervisors online; we were joined by about 10 residents. June’s meeting minutes were approved as published; so we then opened a Public Hearing during which we adopted the FY21 Budget previously published after a workshop. There were no comments regarding the Budget which provides for expanded service levels as well as NO fee increase. This continues our string of about ten years with no increases, but continuous service expansions. Hearing no discussion, the Public Hearing closed after approval of the two associated resolutions. Landscaper SERVELLO continues servicing our landscaping at reasonable quality levels with good communication between Field Services Manager Gerhard van der Snel and SERVELLO’s on-site personnel. The fact is that not everything is perfect, but overall, things look pretty good.

the first reimbursement check and expect to receive another in the last quarter of this year—after FY21 begins on October 1st. As you’ve noticed, we have many trees and miles of sidewalks. Those trees have roots and that’s the beginning of the end for sidewalks. The end result is that Field Services will be routinely cleaning, grinding and replacing sidewalks forever. This mirrors the ongoing (state-mandated) invasive weed mitigation project which is likely to continue indefinitely. Weeds and sidewalks are expensive but doing most of the work in-house is far less expensive than hiring contractors.

An ongoing discussion has been Central Bark Dog Park which was locked several months ago—apparently by Mr. Fusilier. At Supervisor Kassel’s behest, a Draft Agreement was drawn up which offers to provide maintenance services at this private park in exchange for public access to the park. In my view, this is not a good move as it rescinds the policy we’ve had in place since the beginning of this year; that is, the CDD does not spend money on private lands.

This supplier is well known to us and in fact has supplied us with the last several playgrounds and installed them. In recent months certain residents have been challenging purchase requests (it’s an election year remember) such as this one so we tabled it to next month in order to view other similar playground requests; this despite our District Manager saying emphatically that the quotes we had were very competitive. And she would know as she sees quotes routinely from the multiple Districts she manages. As this is written, I’ve seen those quotes and indeed our quote IS very competitive.

After a few months, there has been no word as to whether landowner Compass Trading Company finds the agreement acceptable. Therefore, we will investigate other avenues in order to restore a dog park area to residents on the east side of town. Gerhard provided his monthly report including ongoing sidewalk maintenance such as cleaning, grinding and now replacement of panels which are beyond repair. A bit of good news: our insurance carrier provides a 50% reimbursement (up to $5000 per year) for sidewalk repairs. We have already received

The playground equipment at the Cat Brier dog park has been placed off-limits as its surface is deteriorating including having rusty metal beginning to stick up as well as other issues. After 20 years in the weather, this is to be expected. This is being treated as an urgent purchase as the playground is currently off limits. Some asked questions regarding potential interference with the underground gas line nearby (none is expected) as well as having pricing from only one supplier.

It is my hope that next month we will approve the requested play structure which includes an overhead umbrella-like shade structure. Your kids deserve to play—not experience needless bureaucratic delays from people who seem to think that big-government bureaucracy should be the status-quo in Harmony. While I agree that your money should be spent carefully, you can be assured that I watch every dollar being spent just as if it were mine. Every dollar. And I stand on the record I’ve achieved

in eight years as the Chair: re-examine any quote or contract we’ve undertaken and see if a better deal can be found. Careful spending is how we’ve expanded services year-after-year without increasing fees. We approved our District Manager moving our bank accounts from Center State to Bank United. The prime reason is that Bank United pays higher interest on their accounts and charges lower/less fees. Last month, the Garden Coordinator made note of her concerns regarding insufficient water at the garden. I undertook the investigation of this and found that the well system at the garden provides virtually identical pressure and flow rates that you get at your home. She also commented on several other things she viewed as problematic surrounding the garden shed. I sent her an email detailing my suggestions which she declined to accept. Everything was presented to the Board and no one had any suggestion(s) other than mine which is to do nothing. We had appropriated $20,000 in the FY21 Budget to purchase a replacement vehicle for Field Services. This will replace a 1993 golf cart which has seen better days. After a thorough search of the market, a 2021 Yamaha UMAX 2 side-by-side was selected. Of note, is that this is electric powered and may signal a transition to all electric vehicles as the Field Services fleet ages and needs replacement. This was purchased under the Governmental Sourcewell purchasing contract for just under $11,200 delivered. Finally, as the Governor extended his Executive Order allowing governmental meetings to continue virtually, our August meeting will be held telephonically once again. See you then! n

DID YOU KNOW? By Kerul Kassel PHD Hamony CDD Board Member

D

ID YOU KNOW that Harmony was designed to promote the peaceful coexistence of human and animal residents within the community while striking a balance between the preservation, use and enjoyment of Harmony's natural areas? Underlying these objectives are the values of fostering a respect for the land, the protection of wildlife and the sensible use and enjoyment of Harmony's abundant natural and manmade amenities by its residents. For a bird, fish or turtle, it’s easy to mistake a small piece of plastic for food—especially when there are millions of pieces of plastic floating in our ponds and lakes, as well as our rivers and ultimately our oceans. Plastic puts all kinds of animal life at risk: birds, fish, mammals, amphibians— you name it. Plastic can, and does, harm it. Did you know that scientists have found plastic fragments in over 1,200 species, including 86% of all sea turtle species, 44% of all seabird species and 43% of all marine mammal species? Ingesting these fragments is often fatal. Animals can starve when they ingest too much plastic that they can’t digest. When animals ingest plastic waste, it can block their digestive tracts. As a result, they starve. Toxic chemicals in plastic can harm animals’ health—and people can ingest these chemicals as they make their way up the food chain. Every day people are throwing away tons of single-use cups, containers, straws, and other plastic “stuff.” Among the worst forms of plastic pollution is polystyrene foam (the stuff most of us call Styrofoam), which never fully degrades. Nothing we use for a few minutes should be allowed to pollute our oceans and rivers and threaten wildlife for centuries. That’s why the Harmony Nature and Animal Committee urges you to use travel mugs and cups, skip the straws, and bring reusable containers for leftovers when you eat out. Another step you can take is to call on state leaders to ban take-out foam cups and containers. Plastic is a really useful material; lightweight, strong, hard to break, can seal things well, has so many applications, and is a wonderful invention. But like all things, it has a downside in terms of mass pollution. One study documented that only 9% of all plastic waste ever produced has been recycled. About 12% has been incinerated, while the rest—79%— has accumulated in landfills, dumps or the natural environment. Microplastics, those tiny bits that flake off as plastic slowly biodegrades? Some researchers warn that the impact of microplastics in soils, sediments and freshwater could have a long-term negative effect on such ecosystems. They say terrestrial microplastic pollution is much higher than marine microplastic pollution—estimated at four to 23 times higher, depending on the environment. Since plastic is everywhere, here are some other ideas for reducing your plastic waste. Those plastic six-pack webs that hold the cans together? Animals can get them caught around their head or arms/legs and that can be fatal, so cut them up before throwing them in the trash. For plastic bags, bottles, and other items that are usually used just once and then thrown away, may be convenient at the moment, but using canvas bags or reusable bottles helps cut plastic pollution substantially. By using glass and/or metal jars for storage, packed lunches, soaps, and beauty products, you can also cut back on your plastic waste. Let’s keep Harmony beautiful, wildlife friendly, and as plastic-free as we can. n August 2020 | Harmony Life Magazine 11
