MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS: THE McTAVISHES

When did you move to Harmony? October, 2015. What street do you live on? Grande Heron Drive. What do you love most about Harmony? We love being so close to nature and enjoying all the beautiful scenery all around us. From the wildlife, to the lakes and ponds. And the sunset at night from our back patio is heavenly. Where did you move from? Originally we are from Boston, MA but have lived in Florida since 2006. And before building our dream home and hopefully our final home in Harmony we lived in Winter Haven and Kissimmee. What do you miss most? I think we both miss most about Boston is our family. We have only 2 other relatives in Florida, so it’s just us. We also miss the dining options and the fall foliage. What is your background? Hugh is a commercial truck driver for over 12 years with Martin Brower. Christal is a former travel agent (15 years) but currently am happiest just being a housewife and homemaker in my dream home.

2 Harmony Life Magazine | December 2017

What is unusual or unique about Harmony, in comparison to your previous home? What Harmony offers that my previous community did not was a sense of family. Since we’ve moved here I have always felt welcomed and everyone is just so friendly. I feel safe to walk around and know that everyone I interact with is pleasant. Also the amenities here far exceed our last community. From the golf, the trails, pools and dining options that’s just an added bonus about living here.

What is your favorite weekend activity? Most

weekends we have “date day” and it could be spending time at a local resort, theme park or movies. But we also just enjoy hanging right here in Harmony grilling out, walking the community or enjoying the pool.

Is there a neighbor experience you are most proud of? I think an experience my wife is

most proud of with our neighbors is when she was struggling to stay motivated with walking after having a mild heart attack. She loves the Harmony Resident Forum and she asked if anyone would be willing to go walking after she saw another resident post the same. The respond in the forum was great and now she is part of a daily walking group called the “Healthy Harmonians.” And she has met some great ladies who encourage each other to be healthy while walking this beautiful community.

Are there any recommendations for other neighbors? What I recommend is to go out and

meet your neighbors, get involved in some of the activities or committees. My wife and I are not use to being so out-going, but in a place like Harmony, it’s easy to enjoy life and the people around you. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to be the best neighbor here, especially when all of the neighbors are awesome.

Do you do any charity or non-profit work? Currently no, but are always open to lend a helping hand for those in need.

What do you do for fun? We love to travel,

especially cruises. We try to cruise at least 2 times a year. We also enjoy movies, music and visiting family back home in Boston. Being empty-nesters we can find fun in some of the most simplest things, like just going for a drive and admiring nature.

What is the last movie that you have seen in the theatre? Last movie was just after

Thanksgiving—we ventured to Disney Springs for dinner and dining to see “Justice League.”

Who is your role model and why? I think we

would both agree our mothers are our role models. We both were raised by a single parent who did all she could to make a better life for us. Hugh – my mother has 3 kids and knew she had to make a better life for us. She left Jamaica, WI to provide for us and once she got situated sent for us to come to America. I’ve watched her go above and beyond what the physical body should to make our lives better. Christal – my mother had to overcome many battles in life while raising 3 kids. It wasn’t always easy but she did her best. Even when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she still was the primary care taker of almost 10 grandkids after school. She showed strength even in her toughest days. She was a fighter to her last breath and that makes her my role model her strength through struggle.

What is your favorite show? Our new favorite show now is of course about cruising called “Dream Cruises.”

What else should we know about you or your family? We are junior high sweethearts (8th

grade) and have been friends for over 35 years. We love to sit out on our front porch rocking on our rockers and waive at all that pass by. We actually share our home with Hugh’s mom, sister and niece six month out of the year when they need to thaw out from the cold. We are a Christian home filled with love and try to do our best to treat people as our faith teaches. n

PHOTO: JEN DWYER

What is… Your name? Christal McTavish. Your spouse’s name? Hugh McTavish. Your child’s name? Atiya McTavish (recently moved out on her own).

What is a good story about Harmony? I think we both agree that the best story out of the many great stories since we’ve been residents in Harmony was during Hurricane Irma. Hugh, being born in Jamaica, hurricanes are something he is use to. But I can’t say the same. Even though we had been in Forida for years, this was the worst storm we had experienced. Thank God for the Harmony Resident Forum. I was able to stay in contact with many of the neighbors who immediately calmed my anxieties and were more than willing to open their homes to me since I was going to be home alone. It was just so reassuring to know that my community was truly looking out for each other to make sure we all made it through safely. That was such a blessing to know that everyone was concerned about their neighbors, the community, and each other.

HARMONY—WHO DOES WHAT? By Steve Berube President, Harmony Residential Owners Association

I

’ve covered this previously but, based on questions I receive and things I hear, I might not have been clear enough; and, with the stunning growth of Harmony lately, there are many new arrivals who might want to understand the number of agencies that all interact in owner/resident lives here. Harmony is owned by SunTerra Communities and they are the entity that develops raw land into lots that are then sold to builders who improve those lots by adding homes that are then sold. Hence the term “Developer” as they’re commonly referred to. The Developer also owns the golf course and related buildings and contracts the management of those to a separate company; and, the Developer owns the Info Center/Town Square area. Next is the Harmony CDD or Harmony Community Development District. Though the word Development is in that title, it is important to know that the CDD is NOT affiliated in any way with The Developer. While the CDD does occasionally build something, such as the walkpath being completed along Butterfly Drive currently, its primary mission is to maintain facilities and infrastructure in the community. This includes pools, their related outbuildings and restrooms, public area landscaping, parks, floodwater control and drainage primarily through the many ponds you see scattered about, doggie pots and other trash cans, the Buck Lakefront including docks, boats and boathouse, sidewalk maintenance throughout the community which primarily means keeping them smooth to walk on, providing streetlights, maintaining the irrigation system with its miles of pipe plus thousands of sprinkler heads and many other miscellaneous items primarily aimed at keeping Harmony looking nice. Many of these tasks are handled by CDD Field Services which currently consists of 5 guys who are all residents. You’ll see them around town on a variety of 4 wheelers or a white pickup; all wear navy blue uniform shirts—stop and say Hi if you have a chance. Note that the CDD controls ONLY public property.

The HROA or Harmony Residential Owners Association provides services such as Covenants enforcement, budgeting for the Social Committee which provides many of the events you are able to take part in, administering a Covenants Committee for rules enforcement and a Design Committee which regulates exterior design changes to your property, provides funding for the Garden Club which is largely self-sufficient, manages the Large Vehicle parking area and perhaps most important (!!) collects your dues. All single-family homes(except in the Lakes) as well as the multi-family homes in Ashley Park fall under the auspices of the HROA. Note that the HROA controls ONLY private property. Speaking of Ashley Park, the condos there are managed by Sentry Management and the townhomes there are managed by Titan Management. While residents there pay HROA dues, the primary caretaking of Ashley homes is handled by the respective management companies there mainly due to the unique needs of that style of housing. Again, private property (common area) control. The Lakes has its own homeowners association again because of its uniqueness primarily meaning the clubhouse that residents there enjoy as well as other exterior maintenance considerations. So, those residents pay CDD fees which gives them access to CDD facilities and the Association pays a per-home stipend to the HROA which gives their residents access to Social Activities sponsored by the HROA. Private property and common area only again. Quite the list isn’t it? Yes and very easily misunderstood. But, note that ALL these entities are completely separate and none has any “power” over any of the others though when practical and necessary, they usually cooperate. Finally, because of Harmony’s multiple unique neighborhoods, there might be exceptions to some of the above. Thanks for reading—see you next month! n

DID YOU KNOW? By Kerul Kassel PHD Hamony CDD Board Member

D

ID YOU KNOW that Harmony was designed to promote the peaceful coexistence of human and animal residents within the community while striking a balance between the preservation, use and enjoyment of Harmony’s natural areas? Underlying these objectives are the values of fostering a respect for the land, the protection of wildlife and the sensible use and enjoyment of Harmony’s abundant natural and manmade amenities by its residents. This month’s subject is Harmony’s Dark Sky goals. Did you know that Harmony was designed for dark skies from its start? Harmony was recognized by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) in 2009 as the world’s first Dark Sky Development of Distinction, a new award designated by IDA to promote subdivisions, master planned communities, and unincorporated townships

whose planning actively promotes a more natural night sky. Such lighting not only promotes the viewing of the night sky, it also minimizes impact on wildlife populations.

lighting on the environment, and cutting down on energy usage. Travel out to Buck Lake on a moonless night and wonder at the incredible star-studded sky.

Animals that are active only at night can be harmed by light pollution because they are biologically evolved to be dependent on an environment with a certain amount of hours of uninterrupted daytime and nighttime. Overillumination of the night sky is affecting them (especially birds). Light pollution has also been found to affect human circadian rhythms (see the Wikipedia entry for Dark Sky Movement for more info). Landscape lighting usually creates wasted light and can interfere with plant flowering and even the activities of beneficial insects.

Harmony’s street lighting is designed to point downward at the street, with the lightshade cutting off light above the bottom of the bulb. On Harmony schools sports fields, the lights have “eyebrow” shields to help direct light toward the playing field and not into the sky. You may have noticed that Harmony residences were designed so that porch lights are recessed into the ceiling to provide a soft welcome for visitors and adequate light for porch use.

The advantages of reducing light pollution include an increased number of stars visible at night, reducing the effects of unnatural

So, if you are considering any changes or additions to your outdoor lighting, please keep in mind these reasons to continue to keep Harmony a Dark Sky community. n

HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNTS Pay for future medical expenses with an added benefit of saving for retirement. By Jason Flowers CPA, CFA, CFP, EA, CTFA

In 2017, if you are covered by a Self-Only plan with a minimum deductible of $1,300 ($2,600 for Family) and max outof-pocket of $6,550 ($13,100 for Family) you would be eligible to contribute into an HSA account. If you are age 55 or older, you may make an additional contribution of $1,000, also known as a “catchupâ€? contribution into the plan, however, if you are age 65 or older you would be ineligible to make an HSA contribution. Contributions into the HSA account must be made by the original due date of the return. If you want to contribute into an HSA account to reduce your AGI on your 2017 tax return you will need to make the contribution by April 17, 2018 (Note: April 15th, 2018 is a Sunday and April 16th is Emancipation Day). HSAs are a great way to save on current taxes, save for future medical expenses and possibly also save for retirement. If your main goal is to save for retirement, it is ideal to first fund a traditional retirement vehicle such as a 401(k), Traditional IRA and/or Roth IRA as investment choices may be limited in an HSA account and maintenance fees may be significant in an HSA. Lastly, to take the deduction on your tax return for contributions made into an HSA you will need to file Form 8889 along with your 1040.
