Covid supply issues have hit Harmony Life Magazine. I was notified last week that our printer cannot get paper and that they were moving in a different direction. The company, MBI out of DeLand, Florida, pulled the same stunt with several other local publications and have left us all scrambling to get things produced. I ask that you have patience and grace with us as we figure a way forward. The quality might vary a bit month to month, and the cost to produce appears to be double which means some content might be less as we may reduce page count.

NOTES FROM the CHAIR By Teresa Kramer Chair, Harmony Community Development District

HARMONY’S CONSERVATION AREAS: Natural Beauty and a Big Responsibility!

W

hen you enter Harmony you immediately feel something different, something you just don’t feel when you are in other communities. This is Harmony’s special character and this character is largely due to the vast natural areas that we have. You drive by them every day when you enter or leave our community, you see them when you gaze across the golf course at the sunset, you move through them when you take a walk on our boardwalks. They are a part of our lives.

As always, please remember that the CDD Board is here to represent you, the residents of Harmony. Just as you might write your Senator or County Commissioner, please also let your CDD Supervisors know of your ideas or concerns pertaining to our Harmony community. Please use our official e-mail addresses, which can be found on our CDD website, www.harmonycdd.org. Click on ‘About Harmony’ in the menu bar and select ‘District Board’ to find our contacts and make your voice heard. When Harmony was first permitted, over 400 acres were set aside as Conservation Areas to be protected and preserved in perpetuity. Of these 400 acres, just over 200 acres have been deeded over to the Harmony CDD and it is our responsibility to protect these areas from destruction or degradation. However, these areas are currently under threat. This threat is not from development or encroachment, but from invasive species that are moving up from South Florida. Last month I was able to join Catherine Bowman, Harmony’s new ecologist, to introduce her to these Conservation Areas. Brad Vinson guided our tour and took us to areas where he has been spending extensive time working to eradicate the most tenacious of these invasive species, Old World Climbing Fern (Lygodium microphyllum). This climbing fern grows rapidly, traveling up over 60 feet into the trees and overtopping entire natural areas. Once it does, all the plants underneath will die off. In addition, the living vines serve as a “fire ladder” causing heavily infested areas to become susceptible to canopy fires. This has happened to entire tree islands within the Everglades and could happen here in Harmony. To prevent this, Harmony has established an invasive weed control program. 4 Harmony Life Magazine l February 2022

The Old World Climbing Fern spreads in two ways, by rhizomes that run under the ground and by producing millions of spores that spread in the wind to other areas. So, these plants, once they arrive, cannot be eradicated and are very difficult to even control. Along with this invasive fern, we also have several other invasive species to control. These include Brazilian pepper and cogon grass. At the CDD’s January meeting, Harmony hired Catherine Bowman, with Bowman and Blair Ecology and Design, Inc. to oversee Harmony’s invasive weed control program. She will meet with our on-site staff quarterly, monitor the progress of our treatment, and report regularly to the South Florida Water Management District. Based on what she finds and the feedback from the Water Management District, she will make recommendations to the CDD Board on what further steps are needed to protect our Conservation Areas. We hope that, in the future, Catherine will be able to help Harmony with other ecological issues that we have such as enhancing littoral zones in stormwater ponds, addressing the problems of new exotic weeds in our landscaping, reducing our need for irrigation water and mowing of our open areas. These are just some of the few ecological issues we face as we try to maintain and improve Harmony. n

Biodegradable, Compostable, Zero Waste, and You

By Beth Johnson, M.Ed. Harmony Nature & Animal Committee Member

D

ID YOU KNOW there is a difference between biodegradable and compostable material? Why should this matter to you, you might ask, and what can you do about it? Many of the choices we make every day affect our environment, and choosing between biodegradable versus compostable products is an important step in protecting Harmony’s green certified community and beyond. Biodegradable items refer to any material which breaks down and decomposes in the environment. Technically just about every material on Earth is biodegradable, including YOU! Sometimes this process can take mere months, such as for paper products, but many times, this process can take much longer. If you’re thinking that plastic takes the longest time to decompose, you might be surprised to know that while plastics can take 400-500 years to decompose, glass bottles far surpass this number and can take over a million years to degrade! However, just because glass takes longer, doesn’t mean it’s as toxic as plastic. Unlike glass, plastic leeches harmful chemicals into our environment. The good news is that most glass and plastic is recyclable. One ton of recycled plastic saves 16.3 barrels of oil, 98 million BTUs of energy, and 30 cubic yards of landfill space. Every six tons of glass recycled can reduce emissions by 1 ton. Compostable goods on the other hand, are organic matter which breaks down, the end product having many beneficial uses which include fertilizing and improving soil health. While biodegradable products often have an undetermined amount of time to degrade, compostable materials will decompose into natural elements within a much quicker time frame. Examples of compostable waste are eggshells, fruits, vegetables, and coffee grinds. Purchasing a composting pail that sits on your counter or alongside your recycling bin is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. And if you don’t have time to use your composted waste or your thumb is more black than green, don’t fret; there are many fellow Harmonians whose gardens would happily benefit from your composted table scraps! For a more detailed list of specific items that are considered compostable, please visit www.epa.gov/recycle/composting-home. The ultimate goal is to create zero waste. Zero waste as defined by the Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA), indicates something that can be consumed and recovered “without discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or human health.” There are many ways to contribute to zero waste. Bringing a reusable water bottle from home and skipping that plastic straw at the restaurant are quick and easy ways to avoid more plastic ending up in landfills. Donating used items by posting them for free in the community forum not only helps neighbors in need, but also keeps these items in circulation for longer. Remember the old saying – “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” Don’t forget that watching television, scrolling social media, and playing video games also burns a lot of electrical energy. To get closer to zero waste in this area, simply switch that tablet off and turn that screen time into green time! Head outside for a hike or go for a bike ride instead. THINGS ABOUT HARMONY YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW By Steve Berube Former HROA President, CDD Board Member

I

’ve written along these lines previously, but based on questions I receive and things I hear and read, I thought it might be useful to cover Harmony from an informational perspective—perhaps from East to West to North to South. So, we’ll cover the various agencies you might have heard of and then move on to the physical space we call home. Way back in 2000, the original developer formed the Harmony Community Development District (CDD) which is a governmental agency that issues bonds to fund construction. This bond issue created debt which must be paid back and said debt, along with Operation & Maintenance costs, make up those CDD Fees you might have heard of. All residential land— along with select other land—are subject to this debt which will be extinguished in 2036 if the current plan holds. In addition to these public lands, there are obviously other areas such as buildings in the Town Center and the Golf Course which are privately owned. Of note is that the Golf Course acts as a giant sponge for rainwater and the entire drainage/flood control system here is built around the dourse to prevent it from flooding while using its vast footprint to recharge the aquifer. This drainage system is primarily the reason the course pays a substantial CDD fee every year. You certainly have noticed our neighbor to the west, Harmony West. While it has a CDD and we share Buck Lake, we have nothing to do with West. Similarly, to the East you might have noticed new construction which will become Harmony Central. Once again, they will have a CDD but it will be a completely separate entity just as West is. Some have asked, “Why can’t we get together and make everything cohesive as well as perhaps share amenities?” The answer is simple: power and money. Each Board thinks it is smarter than the other Board and they worry that they might be asked to spend a dollar or two more for sharing amenities. Backward thinking in my view but that’s what happens when some people get a taste of “power.” “You do your thing and I’ll do mine.” Many wasted opportunities. While the CDD governs all of Harmony, you 8 Harmony Life Magazine l February 2022

might be familiar with the Harmony Residential Owners Association-HROA. The HROA governs all single family homes here EXCEPT those in The Lakes. The HROA also governs the condos and townhomes in Ashley Park— but only to a very limited degree as both the condos and townhomes each have an association to better serve their unique needs such as cable/internet, building maintenance and common areas. I excluded The Lakes because, by virtue of being gated, they have unique needs again served by their own unique associations. Let’s stay to the East with The Lakes: so far, you’ve seen East and South Lakes take shape and both are 55-plus communities. The Enclave is building now and is a non-age-restricted community. Also planned is North Lake. Of interest will be to see how these new areas interact with the current neighborhoods there since they have a private clubhouse. Moving west, much of Five Oaks Drive fronts along the golf course until we get to the Waterside neighborhood. Being that the two streets there are separated by a pond, Waterside was a great name choice. Continuing west, you’ll see a new CDD-operated dog park which is available to all residents. Adjacent to this dog park is a street leading to the Golf Maintenance Facility. Further West you’ll see a dirt road (soon to be resurfaced) which leads to the Garden (plots are available for rental), the CDD Field Services office, landscaper equipment storage area and the commercial vehicle parking area; like the garden, rental slots are available for vehicle storage here in a secure facility. For any CDD facility questions, please contact cddmaintenance@inframark.com.

golf course frontage continues. Next is Ashley Park Condos & Townhomes; of note is that the center of Ashley Park contains a CDD-owned pool and surroundings. This pool also requires keycard access and sadly, is not heated. Sorry. We now have turned South on Cat Brier Trail which travels along the Golf Course on its east. You will notice that homes line Cat Brier on the west side until you arrive at an open green space with a large driftwood monument fronting two dog parks. Of note is that every neighborhood has playgrounds of various sizes and types—all are open to the public as are the dog parks. Further south, we arrive at Lakeshore Park and the well-hidden Buck Lake. Why is it hidden? Well, quite simply it is a private lake surrounded by trees. But, at this point, our story ends—until next month! Thanks for reading—I’ll see you then. n

Continuing West, you’ll see what will be neighborhood M; it is currently occupied by horse stables which will give way to homes once the private owner sells the land. Across from M we have the privately-held pickle ball court which is adjoined by the CDD-owned swim club. It is noteworthy that this pool is geothermally-heated/cooled to 88 degrees year round. Access requires a key card which can be obtained from inframark as noted above. Town square is next; the grassy center square is public; all other surrounding land/buildings are private. Moving along Five Oaks you’ll see open fields on the South side; this will soon give way to a new apartment complex. On the North side the The opinions expressed in the Harmony Life Magazine articles are those of the author(s) and do not reflect the opinions of Quantum Marketing Communications, Harmony Life Magazine or the Publisher.

FOUR NUMBERS TO KNOW for YOUR HEART HEALTH

Y

our heart: It’s the engine that helps your body function and allows you to enjoy all life has to offer — from favorite activities to relationships with friends and family members. This February, celebrate this amazing organ during National Heart Month. Heart disease affects approximately 84 million Americans and is the number one cause of death for men and women every year. Take control of your heart health by learning about four key numbers — and what you can do to keep them where they need to be.

1. Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a leading cause of heart failure and stroke. Also called hypertension, high blood pressure can cause blockages in the arteries, reducing the flow of oxygen to the heart and making it work harder. The American Heart Association’s guidelines for blood pressure and treatment: • Normal: Under 120/80 • Elevated: 120-129/80 • Stage 1 Hypertension: 130-139/80-89 • Stage 2 Hypertension: Higher than 140/90 Your doctor will help you understand what these targets mean for you and if any treatment is necessary. Treatment may include a heart10 Harmony Life Magazine l February 2022

healthy diet, more physical activity or medication to help control your blood pressure.

2. Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance that is found in the body and produced in the liver and other cells. It can also come from eating foods that are high in fat. High levels of cholesterol can cause blockages of the arteries, potentially leading to a heart attack. A desirable total cholesterol level is less than 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). An annual blood test can monitor your levels and help your doctor make recommendations tailored to your health.

3. Blood Sugar

High blood sugar levels may indicate that you have diabetes or pre-diabetes, two conditions that can greatly increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association considers diabetes to be one of the major controllable risk factors for heart disease. A normal blood sugar level after fasting is 100 mg/dL.

4. Body Mass Index (BMI)

Being overweight or obese is a major risk factor in many life-threatening diseases, including diabetes, cancer, high cholesterol, metabolic syn-

drome and heart disease. Your BMI is a calculation based on your height and weight and can indicate whether you are overweight or obese. People are considered overweight starting at a BMI of 25 and obese at 30 or higher.

15 Minutes

Fifteen minutes is all it takes to save a life. That’s how long it takes to get a simple health screening that gives you the information you need to live a heart healthy life. Talk to your primary care provider about what preventive measures or screenings are right for you. Your doctor can also assess your heart health at your annual physical, an important part of managing your whole health. It’s just one of many reasons you should see a doctor in times of both health and wellness. To learn more, visit AdventHealthCardiovascularInstitute.com.

Ahhh, FEBRUARY—The MONTH of LOVE! By Stephanie Milfeld Owner, Z and Q – A Children's Boutique

W

e talk about love for our significant others, love for our children, love for ourselves, which is so important and I could go on forever about — I’ll just leave this little bit here: mama, love yourself and your body, no matter what. You can always strive to be better but don’t strive for perfection because despite what social media may portray, perfection doesn’t exist and you will drive yourself to insanity trying to reach an unattainable goal of being the perfect mother, perfect spouse, the perfect employee/boss, having the perfect body, living in a perfect house, etc. But I’ll get off my soapbox on that to reach the bigger love here.

Love for your community

Since the pandemic hit I have seen the love for our downtown community grow so much. When things shut down and people could easily order from Amazon, we all opened back up and more people started to venture toward small businesses for their needs before searching online. The stores down here are thriving and many had their best holiday season in a very long time, in the middle of a pandemic! For that love, I am forever thankful. If you have not been downtown St. Cloud recently I encourage you to. There are more events popping up down there and the business owners strive to bring you the best product and service. Many are run by less than five employees. There are handcrafted natural bath and body essentials at Sudz LLC; meticulously decorated designer cookies by Savvy Sweets; home decor and accessories for the modern bohemian home, including a variety of house plants and planters at D+K Renewal; gourmet macarons and chocolates from La Fontaine Macarons; unique handpicked collective gifts and accessories from Lavendar Patch; plus quality boutiques and restaurants makes for a great day downtown, all while supporting your neighbors and loving your community.
