COVER STORY

MEET

CHERRY & DAN HECK

C

herry came to the USA from the UK 10 years ago and has lived here for eight of those years. Daniel came from Peoria, Illinois to Central Florida about 35 years ago and has lived in Harmony for about the last 18 months. Both are retired—Cherry from the Royal Household at Windsor Castle, and Daniel from Tesla Solar Division. Cherry and Daniel were married in the midst of the Covid shutdown on August 19, 2020, performed by a friend and neighbor, Carole Greenwald, with just six guests, outside amongst the trees in the pocket park of the Estates section of Harmony. They are now Mr. and Mrs. Heck.

They never grow tired of taking golf cart rides to see the wildlife around them, to take photographs and to walk the nature trails, or take boats out on Buck Lake. Both are members of the Harmony Nature and Animal Committee. As far as hobbies, Cherry likes artsy crafty things and photography, and Dan loves to grow plants. But they also enjoy and participate in the other many activities organized in Harmony, like the holiday festivals, the Sunday Artisan and Craftsman market and trivia evenings, to name but a few. Their children live in England, Florida and California, and have friends and family in Illinois and the UK, and all enjoy coming to visit Harmony. But most of all, besides the nature, Cherry and Dan enjoy the community and the people in it, and the welcoming and caring feel that goes together to make this place feel like home. n 2 Harmony Life Magazine | November 2020

KRISTIN MACARI OF STUDIO NINE 13

Dan remembers when he did electrical work out here when Harmony was first being built and he thought, "Wow, this place is so far from everywhere." There was hardly anything here then and Cherry remembers when she came eight years ago, there were no homes in the Estates, very few in the Green neighborhood, no Lakes neighborhood, and nothing near the west entrance either. But Cherry came because she felt it was a unique place to live with the surrounding nature and lakes, and despite a few changes in the intervening years, she is not disappointed by what Harmony has grown to be. Dan is also just as enthusiastically enchanted by what Harmony has grown to be. Whenever asked by anyone outside Harmony about his current home, he can only think to say how happy he is to be here.

HELP LOCAL BUSINESSES THRIVE By Stephanie Milfeld

Happy November! Can you believe it? We are literally almost to the end of 2020. The year that just keeps on giving…maybe not giving us anything we want, but it certainly keeps dishing it out. The best part about the end of 2020 is all the political signs will disappear for maybe a year or so until the next election cycle because, let's face it, between politics and COVID, I think we could all use a break. The thing is small businesses can't take a break. Small businesses have to hustle ALL. THE. TIME. to keep their businesses afloat, especially in a time when many of their customers are not coming out into public spaces like they used to. I want to explain a few simple ways that you can help your local community businesses thrive.

Social Media

This is HUGE because this is where the majority of people are introduced to small businesses—find their page, like it, follow them, comment on their posts, share a post of theirs with your friends, tag them on your own posts or when you see people asking for recommendations on different threads, TAG a local business. This does not cost you anything, but helps get the businesses out in front of other people who may or may not even know about them. Your friend is

likely to take your recommendation over a stranger any day of the week so in addition to the funny memes, family pics, and Tik Tok videos, share a local business special, upcoming event, or post that caught your attention next time to help them out.

REVIEW

Go on Facebook and google and write a simple review. Think about all the times that you have read a review yourself before going somewhere and how many times you have actually left a review whether you enjoyed it or not? Most of the time, people do not leave a review and it is critical for small businesses because it is much more common for you to see someone criticize than to simply praise a business.

SHOP - EAT - LOVE - LOCAL

Listen, I GET IT. Ordering Amazon Prime is so easy; it comes fast, and you can find nearly everything. But guess what? When you buy from a local business they can pay for their kid's gymnastics class, they can put food on their table, they can employ locals to work in their stores. It means SO MUCH MORE to the local economy and your neighbors when you buy local than when you go to Walmart or shop on Amazon. Check out some of the awesome events coming up in the community, and don't forget to stop in Z and Q – A Children's Boutique located at 1037 New York Ave — open 7 days a week. "Awesome experience! Process was smooth and easy. Completed process, transactions, virtual tour and test drive online. Didn't step one foot in the dealership, communicated via email, text and phone with no problems and prompt responses. Vehicle delivered to my house before expected. Awesome experience!" ~ Tim from Tavares, FL

"We were apprehensive about our first car purchase from a dealership but had a great experience at Kisselback Ford. We were able to do everything over the phone and they delivered the vehicle to our home. The staff was friendly & helpful - glad we found Kisselback, very happy!" ~ Kirby from Lake Wales, FL

"I live over two hours away and was able to do the whole transaction via phone. Once we agreed to terms the truck was delivered on the day & time of my choice. I have ordered pizza over the phone that hasn’t gone as smooth as buying this truck. I definitely recommend calling Kisselback for your next vehicle purchase !!" Mat from Labelle, FL

DID YOU KNOW? By Kerul Kassel PHD Hamony CDD Board Member

D

ID YOU KNOW that Harmony was designed to promote the peaceful coexistence of human and animal residents within the community while striking a balance between the preservation, use and enjoyment of Harmony's natural areas? Harmony incorporates natural and human-built environments that blend in ways designed to enhance the relationships between humans and animals and maximize the benefits of their peaceful coexistence. While retaining natural areas, Harmony is part of a human-dominated landscape where our actions profoundly affect the welfare of wild animals. One of the ways we protect our environment is through recycling, and in the U.S., recycling rates have been about 34% of total waste. Recycling reduces toxic pollution from waste facilities. It conserves resources, like trees, water, metals, and fossil fuels. It reduces waste, while saving energy, and mitigating carbon emissions. It has been reported to create 20-100 jobs for every one job created with landfilled waste. Did you know there are 5 “R”s of waste management? Aside from recycle, there’s reduce and reuse, refuse (don’t buy what you don’t really need), and rot (compost). More on each of these a little later. We’re lucky that we have single stream recycling in Osceola County, where all of our recyclables go into a single container. It’s easy and quick for residents. This stuff is sorted both by hand and by machine once it reaches a MRF (Materials Recovery Facility). That’s why it’s important to exclude from your bin jagged pieces of scrap metal or broken glass that can harm workers, or plastic shopping bags that can jam up machinery. With current commodity and oil prices low, the market for some recycled materials is challenging, yet this is quite likely a temporary scenario. Another issue is that an increasing amount of recycled truckloads go to the landfill or incinerator because they are considered contaminated. It’s up to us to ensure our recycling actually gets recycled. Coated paper receipts, shredded paper, broken glass,

diapers, plastic lids and caps, plastic shopping bags, and Styrofoam (polystyrene) containers risk contaminating an entire truckload. How to take recycling the next level? First, reduce buying new stuff where possible and appropriate, and reuse your existing stuff (contact me for strategies: Kerul@me.com) — it saves $$ as well as reducing waste. Second, rather than “wish-cycle” anything that looks remotely recyclable, ensure your recyclables comply with county program guidelines (http:// www.osceola.org/agencies-departments/publicworks/solid-waste/curbside-collection-services/ acceptable-recycling-items.stml).

compost in your garden, flower beds, or among your shrubs for healthier plants. You can compost your shredded paper, too (or use it for packaging cushioning)! Fifth, take your electronics waste to appropriate recyclers (see e-stewards.com). Reycling is one of those green community no-brainers. Let’s set an example here in Harmony, by reducing our total waste and taking action to ensure the recyclables that leave end up actually recycled. Perhaps a contest for the cleanest recyclable bin? What are your contest ideas? n

Third, use recycling best practices: clean all containers and let them dry before putting them in the bin so they don’t contaminate other items like paper. DON’T flatten plastic containers as they can confuse sorting machines, but DO flatten cardboard boxes. Don’t include cardboard that has food residue, plastic liners or components. Become familiar with what NOT to recycle. Fourth, don’t landfill food waste: compost it! It’s easier than you might imagine with just a little attention, and you can use the finished November 2020 | Harmony Life Magazine 7

WELCOME HARMONY WEST!! By Steve Berube Chairman HCDD and President HROA

P

lease allow me to join the publisher and the residents of Harmony (Main) to both this magazine and to the wonderful community of Harmony. I’ve been watching the rapid growth of West and look forward to getting to know our new neighbors better. First, some HROA news and info: as you might have noticed, with the slight lifting of COVID restrictions, Activities Director Jennifer Harmony has been producing events once again. The Activities Budget was expanded this year to provide for even more events that most seem to enjoy. Keep your eyes and ears open!! Your HROA finished Fiscal Year 2020 with about $150,000 in Cash Reserves and about $11,000 in Delinquent Accounts due and virtually no debt. I just recently found out that the single largest delinquent account—which was about 25% of the total delinquencies— has been collected. These collection efforts are carried out by attorneys and include actions up to and including foreclosure. Some have commented that foreclosure is an extreme measure and that may be true. But, to be fair to those who do pay, it is important to be sure that ALL pay. You might have noticed the lack of HROA meetings. In response to COVID, nearly all HROA attorneys are telling their clients to suspend meetings and we have followed suit. Once the restrictions are lifted, we will get back to in-person meetings. Moving on the CDD, its regular monthly meeting was held (telephonically) on October 29th. As this is written, the election has not taken place but two seats will be changing this year and we anticipate a warm welcome for the two new arrivals. Going back to meetings: CDD Meetings will be held at Grace Community Church which is located on US-192, just east of Nova Road. As you might remember, we had been meeting at Creative School in St. Cloud, however, the room there was a “tight” fit under normal conditions so, as it became evident that social

distancing would become the norm, I knew that once we returned to in-person, we’d need more space. After checking several venues, Grace seemed like a good fit. So we signed a usage contract and hope to see you there. Bonuses: we’re saving a few dollars and it’s closer. In other business, we recognized outgoing Supervisors Bill Bokunic and David Farnsworth for their years of service to the CDD. Certificates will be framed and delivered to them. You might remember that we experienced a significant underground storm drainpipe failure which has since been repaired which restored normal storm drainage. However, the contractor did not follow specific contractual requirements and we have a disagreement over certain other actions taken by them. We anticipate holding a hearing soon to sort through the difficulties. We have approved the construction of a new dog park on E. Five Oaks, just west of Feathergrass. The District Engineer will have a site development plan prepared for the County permitting process. We also are considering a new playground adjacent to this dog park to accommodate the steady growth here—especially in the Waterside neighborhood. Also, while most residents of The Lakes don’t have young children, many DO have grandchildren and this new playground will be most convenient for them. Preliminary design includes a see-saw, round swing, an adult-facing-child-on-oneswing swing and a couple of other surprises including Handicapped access throughout. It will be expensive but kids are important, aren’t they? Field Services continues its activities including sidewalk cleaning, grinding and panel replacements as needed. Supervisor Mike Scarborough highlighted the need to resurface the Garden Road; we had been hoping to wait until Harmony Central installed their new utility lines and then regraded the road, but the fact is that it needs attention now. So, quotes are being taken.

The opinions expressed in the Harmony Life Magazine articles are those of the author(s) and do not reflect the opinions of Quantum Marketing Communications, Harmony Life Magazine or the Publisher.

Like the HROA, the CDD FY2020 ended on a positive note with spending coming in under budget by about $55,000 despite several significant unexpected expenses…this “leftover” money is “swept” into the various cash reserve funds we maintain. As FY2021 is modeled after FY2020, we anticipate a good year even though it’s just starting. Finally, after acquiring parcel VC1 a few years ago, we have struggled to come up with an acceptable use for it. So, a survey has been prepared and will likely be mailed to every owner in Harmony so we can get feedback from those stakeholders. Most likely, it will arrive in the December/January timeframe. Thanks for reading and Happy Thanksgiving. Stay safe Harmony! n
