Here is a family fun option from one of advertisers, Wild Florida: WILD FLORIDA CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF ADVENTURE WITH FREE WEEKDAY GATOR PARK ADMISSION

COVER PHOTOGRAPHY

2020 marks Wild Florida’s 10th anniversary of airboat tours, animal encounters and safari expeditions. To celebrate years of continued expansion and success, Wild Florida is offering free weekday Gator Park admission to everyone that brings a canned food donation throughout the 10th month of the year, October. With tin and aluminum traditionally being associated with a 10th anniversary, Wild Florida plans to collect much needed canned food donations for local charities. These canned food items will be donated to local food pantries to help families in need. Wild Florida Airboats, Gator Park & Drive-thru Safari opened on Lake Cypress in Kenansville in 2010, with a focus on educating individuals about Central Florida’s natural resources. Starting off with a 14-acre Gator Park and airboat tours, Wild Florida’s mission continues to educate guests on protecting and conserving Florida’s diverse ecosystem by offering noninvasive, immersive airboat tours throughout the Everglades and hands-on animal interactions to help connect guests with Florida’s ecosystem. “Hard to believe 10 years have gone by,” says Sam Haught co-owner and founder of Wild Florida. “We had a vision of bigger things to come, but none of us thought Wild Florida would be a 285-acre adventure park in such a short time. Mostly we’re thankful to everyone that has helped us make it happen.” Admission to Wild Florida’s Gator Park is $10 per adult and $8 per child and Florida residents can enjoy the Gator Park for just $5 per adult and per child. On weekdays during the month of October, Gator Park admission will be free for everyone, regardless of residency. Wild Florida offers a variety of interactive experiences, hands-on animal encounters, and adventure packages that let guests explore Florida’s natural wildlife. See you in November! COVER STORY

TRIBUTE TO

MARYLIN ASH MOWER M Retiring Harmony Garden Coordinator BY NETTIE R. BARTEL

arylin Ash Mower and husband, Dick, moved to Harmony in 2010. Dick wanted to have a vegetable garden and with the support of Greg Golgowski, of the Harmony Institute, a site was identified, and Dick became the first gardener at the newly created Harmony Community Garden. Soon after the first organizational meeting, chaired by Greg, Marylin became the garden coordinator, a position she has held for the better part of ten years. It quickly became obvious that improvements were needed to make the garden an amenity that would help Harmony residents learn the joy of growing their own vegetables. Compost was added; the developer financed the building of raised beds, individual water faucets, a gazebo with a picnic table, and a fence to keep out wildlife. Harmony High School technology students built a shed for tools. Gardeners now have access to garden tools and sprayers as well as information about gardening practices. Organic garden practices are encouraged and widely used. This year an orchard with a variety of fruit trees was created.

It goes without saying that we all benefit from the Harmony Community Garden. Currently we have over 22 families on a waiting list for the currently occupied 47 garden lots. After 10 years of unselfish and competent attention, work, and care, Marylin is retiring from the coordinator position. This will give her time to attend to some of her other interests and talents: beading, knitting, canasta, bookclub, and kayaking, to name a few. This community owes her a tremendous debt of recognition and thanks. It is not an overstatement to say that without Marylin and her late husband Dick, there would be no community garden in Harmony. Thank you, Marylin, for your gift of leadership in founding and developing the Harmony Community Garden! n 2 Harmony Life Magazine | October 2020

KRISTIN MACARI

Under the leadership of Marylin, our garden has become well known locally, and beyond. Celebration, St. Cloud Community Garden, Twin Lakes, Boston City Community Garden and many other communities have visited our garden to get ideas on how to create a garden in their own community. Throughout the years, the Florida University Extension Service has offered classes on best practices of gardening. This fall, a mentoring program for new gardeners and educational classes will start. Realtors tell us that our Community Garden has become an amenity that attracts interest from potential buyers of Harmony properties.

How Job Loss Affects Your Health and Life Insurance Coverage By Kim Kirsch Insurance Broker/District Manager, Healthcare Solutions Team

I

f you lost your job in 2020, you’re not alone. Unemployment is reaching levels unseen since the Great Depression across the country, with about 30 million workers currently seeking unemployment benefits. When addressing the immediate financial emergencies that come with losing your job, it can be easy to forget the big picture. Unfortunately, even when a job loss is temporary, you may lose your health insurance and some other important benefits. While you can retain your employer health insurance for up to 18 months under a federal program called COBRA, you’ll have to pay the entire cost yourself, plus 2%. Other benefits aren’t protected under the program. This means you could lose your life insurance and disability insurance while you’re unemployed. Even if you aren’t among the millions of Americans currently uninsured, it’s a good idea to have a firm understanding of how layoffs and furloughs affect your insurance coverage. Obtaining health, life and disability insurance through your employer is often less expensive than purchasing an independent policy, and many employees depend on that coverage. Making preparations to continue your coverage can

help you navigate the uncertainties of unemployment.

Furloughs, Layoffs, and Terminations Can Have Different Effects on Your Insurance

In uncertain times, many people are figuring out there are a variety of terms that fall under the vast umbrella of unemployment. While the words are often used interchangeably, they mean different things. They can also have different impacts on your insurance coverage. To get a better understanding of the impact of job loss on your insurance coverage, it helps to understand the difference between termination, layoff, and furlough.

FURLOUGH

A furlough is a temporary mandatory leave of absence initiated by your employer. Furloughs are often a result of a slow economy or limited funds to pay employees to work full time. Typically, employees are expected to return to their original position and salary after a designated time period. If you’ve been furloughed, you’re still considered an employee of the company and may be able to retain some benefits during furlough. The purpose of a furlough is to allow a business to stay afloat through difficult times without the strain of paying employees. The expectation is that employees will return to work. Some health, life and disability plans have provisions to allow continued coverage during a furlough. Even if the insurance plan doesn’t automatically take care of furloughed employees, your employer may work with the provider so coverage can continue.

LAYOFF

A layoff is generally a separation from employment due to lack of work. While you may be called back to work when/if the situation changes, there are no guarantees. Employees who are laid off are no longer employees of a business. If your employer is confident about the potential to recall workers in the future, they may offer continued benefits for a specific period of time.

TERMINATION

A termination occurs when an employee is separated from employment and won’t have the opportunity to return to the company. This often occurs with a reduction of force due to lack of work. When positions are permanently eliminated, employees will likely have fewer opportunities to continue any type of benefits. If you have experienced any of these in the last 60 days, get with a licensed health insurance broker to see if you’re eligible for an SEP on the ACA marketplace. Otherwise, your broker should offer you a private market plan that’s somewhat less expensive and benefit rich. n

DID YOU KNOW? By Kerul Kassel PHD Hamony CDD Board Member

D

ID YOU KNOW that Harmony was designed to promote the peaceful coexistence of human and animal residents within the community while striking a balance between the preservation, use and enjoyment of Harmony's natural areas? Harmony incorporates natural and human-built environments that blend in ways designed to enhance the relationships between humans and animals and maximize the benefits of their peaceful coexistence. While retaining natural areas, Harmony is part of a human-dominated landscape where our actions profoundly affect the welfare of wild animals. Now that it’s fall, the acorns are dropping. Did you know that many of Florida’s native species (and some non-native ones) consume this fruit of the oak tree? Most people think of the gray squirrel as the quintessential acorn eater. They are growing in number here in Harmony now that our trees are larger. Aside from squirrels, though, more than 100 species of animals eat acorns, according to the Florida Cooperative Extension Service. Native Shermans Fox Squirrels, White-tailed Deer, Raccoons, Opossums, various species of mice, Wild Turkeys, Bobwhites, Sand Hill Cranes, Bluejays, Common Grackles, Rock Pigeons, Mallards and Wood Ducks, American crows, and some woodpeckers are a few of the species that dine on this rich source of starch and fat. Black Bear have been known to eat acorns, as well. Some insects eat them, too. Our oak trees are very important sources of food for all these critters. Acorns were an ancient source of nutrition for people around the world. They were a popular food in Florida among Native Americans, early European and American settlers, and even the cracker cowmen who built and roamed their herds in and through our area just over a century ago. Acorns must first be prepared for human consumption, a process that includes shelling them and soaking them for a long time to leach out the bitter tannins and make them edible. There are recipes for roasted acorns, acorn brittle, acorn bread and cookies, even acorn coffee! While it’s not likely that any of us will be using acorns as a staple of our diet, up to 75% of a deer’s autumn diet consists of acorns. That means the season is a good time to see more wildlife in our neighborhoods. Different animals graze for dropped acorns at different times of day: turkey and crane in the early morning, small birds throughout the day, raccoons, opossum, and deer at night. Please use care when driving around the streets, especially the “boulevards” that outline the community, as these are adjacent to the areas where wildlife hang out most of the time. When you see a deer, be aware that there may be more than one…or two. They frequently travel in groups of 3-6, so if you’ve only seen one or two, move your vehicle slowly, because others may be right behind (I learned this the hard way – though it was much, much harder for the deer). Take advantage of the season to look out your windows at dusk and dawn, or to take a walk on one of Harmony’s numerous pathways and trails, and you very well might find some interesting acorn-eaters to view (from a distance). Now that it’s a bit cooler, it’s time to get out and enjoy some of the many wonderful amenities and opportunities with which we are so blessed. n October 2020 | Harmony Life Magazine 7

ELECTION SEASON IS IN FULL SWING

A

By Steve Berube Chairman HCDD and President HROA

nd that includes here in Harmony. The most obvious reminder? Those ugly campaign signs which are popping up all over; in my view, they’re a blight on our otherwise lovely environment and a needless load on the landfill after the election. But, that’s just my view and it seems that they’re widely believed to be necessary to get elected. Having said that, endorsements are a part of every election and because several people have asked me, this is going to be one. But before we get to that, let me thank and congratulate the four candidates who stepped up and into the ring. This is the big year for CDD seats with three up for reelection, with one seat being re-elected unopposed. That leaves four people vying for the remaining two seats. Of thousands of residents here, only four were willing to give their time and energy in trying to keep Harmony great. For those who don’t know me, I am the Chairman of the CDD Board of Supervisors—a position I’ve held since 2012; I first joined the Board in 2009. Additionally, I am the President of the HROA since 2017 and I’ve held various HROA Board positions since joining it in 2009. I tell you that because over those years I’ve watched Board members come and go and I have a clear memory of who the best ones were. Invariably, the best are/were the younger ones and females. (That’s an interesting comment coming from an old guy, isn’t it?) I believe that younger candidates are important because, just looking around, shows that we are a youngfamily-heavy community. Who better to represent our most important resource—children—than their parents?

representation is needed on the Board. With one male and one female candidate, my conservative choice is Melissa Grove for Seat 1. That brings us to Seat 5: Again, one male and one female—one a bit younger than the other. My Seat 1 choice adds the female and as it turns out, the male seat 5 candidate is the younger one. So, my conservative choice for Seat 5 is Gustav Erikson. As noted above, I’ve interacted with all four candidates in any number of ways—some longer and more frequently than others. I know all four are very qualified to do the work required, and so making choices is difficult. But now you know mine. Also, in last month’s edition of this magazine, you were able to read about them in their own words. Again, my thanks to all and know that these are not easy choices. Sadly, there are not seats for all this time so there will be winners and nonwinners, but, certainly there will be no losers. Thanks for taking the time to read and perhaps consider my choices. No matter what, please EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE. A long story indeed; but I believe in giving you the most information possible so you can make the best decision in choosing someone to manage your $4.2 million budget. Stay safe Harmony. n

In my time in office, I’ve always strived to do the best I can for the most residents on any given issue. Because of Harmony’s fee structure, my prime focus is on keeping rates down. To that end, CDD fees are exactly the same as they were 10 years ago and HROA dues are at a historic low. Both organizations have been able to achieve that fiscal discipline without cutting any services; in fact, CDD Field Services was established five years ago to maintain our community and the HROA has contracted with a professional events coordinator to provide all the festivals, concerts, movie nights and other events we all enjoy. More services: no increased fees. In other words, taking a conservative path to keep Harmony great. Of course, while I might provide the guidance, I can only do things with the approval of the Board(s) and that brings us to this point. A side note: my long service, public persona and direct manner of conversation has led some folks to be critical of me which is fine. But, it’s interesting to note that many of my most vocal critics have never taken a moment to speak even a single word to me in person. I can assure you that as long as I hold office, I will continue to do my best for you; this sometimes means crossing well-off landowners who want to profit off Harmony and leave a mess behind for resident-owners to clean up. RESIDENTOWNERS COME FIRST. My point is to ask, that even if you don’t like or agree with me, please don’t hold that against my endorsees. I’ve known all four candidates for some time now; obviously some longer than others. And, I’ve interacted with all of them in various ways. I also know it’s important for Board members to garner support from other Board members in order to bring their ideas/desires to fruition. In other words, it’s important to bring the future closer rather than dwell on the past.

HARMONY RESIDENTIAL OWNERS ASSOCIATION HARMONY RESIDENTIAL OWNERS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL FEE

Don’t forget your association fees should have been paid by now. If you have not yet made your one-time yearly payment this needs to be done immediately to avoid late fees and interest. If you have questions or concerns about your account please contact our office.

PARKING

On street parking is increasingly becoming an issue throughout our community. Specifically, on streets that do not have designated parking. Please be mindful of your neighbors and park your cars in driveways or garages. Several streets in Harmony are very narrow and end in cul-de-sacs; with cars parked on the street, the trash trucks cannot travel on the street, never mind make the turn in the cul-desac. So, they tend to bypass the entire street. Parking on the street not only detracts from property value, but it also greatly diminishes the curb appeal of any community. It is also a huge safety concern for everyone in the community, especially our young children. In an effort to help curb this activity, The Association will solicit assistance from the Sheriff ’s office to issue tickets for various on street parking violations, i.e. blocking sidewalks, parking against the flow of traffic, parking too close to a traffic control device, etc. For more information on parking violations, please refer to Florida Statute 316.1945.

WHAT’S YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS?

Please add your email address to your owner account. To add any of this information to your account, please email it to us: info@myhoasolution.com or use the contact us form on our website. INSPECTIONS & VIOLATIONS

Our staff do regular inspections of the community and part of our job that we are employed to do is these inspections. We have to take a photo of any infraction we see, as we are required to have proof. My staff should be able to do this without fear of being verbally abused, chased down and threatened. Very sadly this has happened a couple of times recently. I have instructed my staff now that if it happens again to dial 911 and call the Sheriff and press charges. Please respect the Staff of Association Solutions, we are only doing our job and trying to make your community a better place to live and increase the value of your home.

is no grass growing at all. If there are bare patches in your lawn, those areas need to be resodded. Remember to water as much as you can. Mildew or Dirt

Everyone’s house and fence attract dirt and the humidity helps mildew grow on the exterior quickly. If you receive a violation for mildew or dirt, then please have your whole property pressure washed, just spraying the offending patches will not resolve the violation. Rear Drive Access/Alleyways

We would like to thank everyone who has been working hard to maintain and raise the community standards. We have been doing regular inspections of the community and there are few issues that we would like to remind you of.

We have noticed that some properties look beautiful from the street side but they do not look so good at the back. Please remember that the back of your home should be taken care of just the same as the front. Grass should be weed free, mowed and edged, flower beds and driveways free of weeds and driveways pressure washed.

Trash Cans

Commercial & Recreational Vehicles

This rule also applies if you live in a property with a rear driveway (alley way access), you may not store your trash can in this area. The trash can must still be stored in your garage or in your fenced back yard.

Storing Items in the yard or driveway

Per your Association documents and guidelines trash cans must be stored away completely out of sight. This means in your garage or a fenced back yard.

Weeding Flower Beds

Flower beds should be free from weeds. Weeds should be pulled out and now just cut short. Mulch does help with the weed growth and makes the landscaping look new and fresh. Don’t forget that this refers to all flower beds, in the front of the house, down the side of the driveway, along the side of the house, etc. Dry and Missing Grass

We know that it is hot and it is difficult to keep the grass looking lush and green but there shouldn’t be any properties where there

Please don’t forget that you may not park trailers, recreational vehicles, etc. outside or on your property. These vehicles must be parked outside of the community. The driveway or yard are not the place to store toys, bikes, tools or trash. Unless in use, these items should all be stored out of sight. This includes the back yard and porches too.

FOR OUR DOG OWNERS

We all love our pets and like to take them out in the community. Just a reminder for the few dog owners who do not always use leashes – Having a dog on a leash is State Law and you can receive a fine. Please use the leash every time you take your dog out. And don’t forget to scoop the poop. The CDD provides bags and special trash cans for this.

YOU CAN DO ANYTHING

By Stephanie Milfeld

ey y’all—another month down to ending the longest year EVER! I mean, has it been long? Because it kinda feels like January, February, March, BLUR, oh Holidays, there you are!

So anyway, Zoe started kindergarten this year—and while she loves it and has an amazing teacher, she also becomes very anxious because she is a perfectionist. She wants to get everything right the first time around and when she doesn’t (or feels like it’s not up to her standards) she kind of freaks out. She panics, sometimes cries or gets angry, frustrated, all the emotions. Is this ringing a bell? Do you have a child like this, or are you like this? If so, no worries—you are NOT ALONE.

One of the things I have been adamant about doing with with her and Quinn since they were babies was mantras. Our mantra goes like this... You are so smart, you are so strong, you are so beautiful and you can do anything! I have them say it back, "I am so smart, I am so strong, I am so beautiful and I can do anything." We say this in the morning before school, we say it at night before bed, or when I see her beginning to get frustrated or overwhelmed—really, whenever. I am by NO MEANS a child psychologist or a doctor or a perfect mother, but I have found that these techniques have certainly helped. When I see her becoming overwhelmed in any area, whether school work, outdoor activities, etc., we practice sitting back, taking a deep breath, maybe breathing in and holding for a few seconds and breathing out, and then repeating our mantra. We also

made friendship bracelets and she wears it all the time, so when she is at school and might feel lonely or overwhelmed, she can grab it and hold tight and know that her mama is giving her a big hug and she knows she can get through the hard things.
